National Biscuit Day

Yes, another day well worth celebrating.

Yes, I love a biscuit ... both homemade & bought. Inb fact I didn't know about this day, and it was a couple of days ago I made my last batch, so I can celebrate in style.

According to There Is A Day For That they have a few facts I thought I would share ... whether you live over here, or elsewhere in the world.

Brits eat 52 biscuits per second on average, so it makes sense to have a day to celebrate this favourite tea-time treat.

A recent poll has revealed Britain's favourite biscuits -

  1. Chocolate Digestive

  2. Chocolate Hobnob

  3. Jammie Dodger

  4. Custard Crème

  5. Shortbread

  6. Bourbon

  7. Jaffa Cake

  8. Ginger Nut

  9. Digestive

  10. Wagon Wheel

  11. Kit Kat

  12. Caramel Wafer

  13. Double chocolate chip cookie

  14. Rich Tea

  15. Fig Roll

  16. Milk chocolate chip cookie

  17. Malted Milk

  18. Chocolate Finger

  19. Hob Nob

  20. Chunky Cookie

My favourites on the list are a Jammie Dodger, a Digestive ... but also like a couple that didn't make the grade.

So, I must have biscuits with my meals today ... I think it must be the law (and that's my excuse!!)

~~~~
Right let's catch up.
Work has been going well over the last couple of days, although they were quite long days.  Made slightly longer as on one of the evenings I ended up (text) chatting to a friend in USA ... so lost track of time, but for them it was only late afternoon.  Still it was a nice reason to be tired, so am not moaning at all.
Today I have the day off and had a lazy start but I really must get some shopping, cleaning and cooking done.  So I really shouldn't be sitting here!  Especially as I also want to get some icons made for a 20in20 over at DW.
Anyway before I get on (and eat biscuits) I shall catch up with you all ... But as ever, before I post this ...
In 1826 Ebenezer Butterick was born - the inventor of the tissue paper sewing pattern. Have you ever made a clothing item using a paper pattern?
Until a few years ago I made a lot of stuff. Always with a pattern. And, it's something I keep aiming to get back to.
Mum used to make everything ... including both Claire's and Brenda's wedding dresses.
Right, let's catch up x
What Odd Weather
Not a great photo, but taken out of my back door earlier. Mum used to call weather like this "concrete skies" and said it used to weigh down on her. I know what she means. It has been like that all day ... very odd
Still I have a couple of other photos to post which are more cheery.  I managed to fully catch up with the prompts over at [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger with these 2 pictures I took this afternoon  (The prompts weer four & rest).  Next month it is my turn to do the prompts so wanted to start it with a "clear slate"
Yes, I am a hoarder but this helps me with this prompt. I leant to read with Ladybird books ... and here are the #4's -
And here are the rest of the books -
More housework done this morning, more of my journal completed as well as some food shopping done.  I also made up a large saucepan of mince to either have as seperate meals, or a basis for something else.  So they are in bowls and in the freezer now.  I am lucky that in my shed I keep a second small freezer so things like this can go in there, rather than the smaller one in my kitchen.
So, now I want to get on with other things, and hopefully catch up with you all.  As ever -
28 – Good Neighbo(u)r Day: Are you a good neighbour? Do you even know your neighbours? Have you ever had any really bad experiences with a neighbour?
Well, I don’t have all-night parties, so does that count.
I have never really had much to do with any of my neighbours, but if needed I would certainly help them, or ask for help.
Right still a few more photos to post ... so, hopefully that will happen later x
Monday Again ...
Monday, March 6th, 2023 11:27 am
debris4spike: (Default)
... Although this week the washing is up on my indoor airer. I am lucky with a 3 story house so have an airer to hang over the stairwell which means they dry fairly quickly, and still smell fresh (& no electric for a tumble drier).
I realised over the weekend that I forgot an addition to my daily meme question about the history/age of our names. Deborah was early early history, my surname early 17th century ... but the nickname was the early 1990's ... Debris is such an appropriate name for me, especially seeing as the question was on Friday when I had bumps and bruises everywhere!
Weekend shifts went well. In fact I am so thankful that I wasn't on duty on the reverse shifts as Mel who did the other 2 shifts had a couple of heart-attack patients arrive at the entrance rather than A&E ... and sadly one was a baby, who even sadder passed away. We all "talk" about the possibilities, but I don't suppose you can ever come to terms with it. Well maybe it shows we are still human if we find it hard to come to terms with such events.
Now I have a couple of days off. I had aimed to go to see Auntie Joyce to see if she had made any decisions, but seeing as the knee and wrists still ache I had cancelled the trip. On the bad side that means I have no excuse not to clean out that large kitchen cupboard.
Still I am sure I can think of some great excuses! After all I do want to have a walk, and am running low on milk so need to get that anyway. Since my trip to Turkey I do like black tea ... but drink it weak that way, and much prefer strong "builder's" tea with milk.
So ... let's get on ...
6 – Start of the British Pie Week! What is your favourite savoury pie? How about your favourite sweet pie? Is a pasty lid on top of a casserole really a pie?
Mum used to make the most amazing chicken pie. I used to watch her do it at least every other week, and can't remember what she did. And, guess whta, I never got her to write down what she added.
She also made a raspberry pie (as well as apple) to die for ... Dad's favourite.
Most of her fruit pies had a "empty" bottom, but still had pastry sides and top ... her chicken one had a top & bottom.
Now having typed that it makes me wish for a slice of both those pies again.
Right now I am hungry! I shall get myself a cup of tea before I do anything else. I am trying to be a good girl this week, as over the weekend I end up having quite a few biscuits, so I am sure the calories were a bit high!
So, will catch up with you soon x
Still No Photos
I took a few last frieday and didn't get them sorted, so that is a task for soon ... and then posting, hopefully soon!
Hope you all had a good weekend - I had a nice lazy afternoon yesterday, although I also had a text fromTim to say he has tested positive for Covid ... mind you I then got a couple of texts in the afternoon of one happy boy ... his football team scored 5 goals..  Hopefully he will be sensible and sleep/rest ... not go back to work to soon (yes, he is very busy)
Work today was good (well I got home a bit early)  Mind you, one of the pateients we were unable to see, as he was 14 and had come by himself ... yes, a very "sensible" guy ... but the law is the law, and rules are rules.  He was fune, and I heard him phoning his mum who seemed upset (she was at home, so no reason she couldn't have been there!)
I am out this evening for a complete change ... an 80th birthday meal, so that will be nice (no washing up!!), although I do prefer to eat my heavier meal during the day.  However when I am on holiday I eat my main meal in an evening ... just habits, I suppose.
Well ... before I go and sort more photos -
4. Do you have any pets? What are their names? Now, what are the names you actually use for them?
Well you all know that I said Goodbye to Jiffy about 18 months ago ... yes, his name was Jiffy, although I often called him "Little Man", Dad used to call him "Bobbin" and Mum called him "Jiff-Odle"
Well that's me up to date - won't be able to catch up with you today ... a job for tomorrow x
debris4spike: (Default)
I will admit with working a few extra hours this week I haven't done the walks that I had been getting used to.  Saturday morning is one that I usually walk to a supermarket a couple of miles away, but its wind & rain this morning.  I am going to be a wimp about the rain, but really even if it was dry it is windy and my asthma has been worse this last week, so I do have the perfect "excuse" to stay in ... do some more icons, etc
Another thing I want to work on is a blanket/throw I am crocheting for a friend ... it's a vey simple large (& growing larger) granny square.  However now I have been invited to the baby shower I have a deadline to work to!
In a moment while cooking dinner I shall do some baking so am trying to make a few positives things happen today!
I hope that everyone in the storm path kept safe ... I have a friend with half their roof missing and another friend who has a barn missing, so my collapsing fence is pretty OK.
Before I head off to do these -
19. Would you rather have all your meals prepared for you, but not have any say in the menu (outside of certain dietary restrictions e.g. allergies), or sleep eight hours every night, but not get to choose your bedtime?
It will have to be meals, as I often sllep more than the 8 hours.
20. What makes you roll your eyes every time you hear/see it?
Patients who say they are unable to drink water (and that happens at least once a week)
Hope you all have a good weekend - see you on Monday x
PS -- Sorry for those who follow my icon journal [livejournal.com profile] d4s_icons as I have just spammed you
debris4spike: (Default)
The hospital provides cooked meals twice a day, seven days a week.  However on Fridays more people chose fish than any other day ... English tradition rules!  However, for me, it's not great, because as I walk through the building as I leave the whole place smells of fish ... which for me is a big EWW.  Sorry everyone, but I just don't like fish, so the smell always gets to me ... oh, well, at least I probably get home quicker in the aim to escape the smell!
Clinic went well, except for one thing.  We had a 5 year old & a 90 year old and 3 other men in their 60 - 70's.  One of them was 2 months younger than me and as he was answering the questions he said he could accept that things were bad, as it was just old age.  I thought the physiologist I was working with was going to choke ... sorry, I know I am getting older, but we all are doing that, aren't we ... old age has certainly not set in!
I have even had a walk as there are some lovely sunny spells today (between showers), and that was nice.
So good and bad bits today - but nice to now spend some LJ time.  Before I see what you are all up to, then icon something -
4. Regardless of your age, what "old person" thing(s) do you do?
LOL - hadn't read that when I was moaning about old age!
Anyway I always make my tea using a tea-pot ... is that old age, or just I realise I like tea better that way!
debris4spike: (Default)
Well I suppose I will find out tomorrow.
I had this morning off which meant I could get an emergency appointment as I had been feeling that my glasses weren't fitting properly (a pain (literally), especially as I have vari-focals).  I wondered if wearing the over-glasses I have to for clinic had caused the problem.  However after 1/2 hour of checks - everything was OK.  However as my notes are marked that I need annual, or less, check-ups they want to see me again tomorrow.  So I am hoping it is just my eyes in general needing a new prescription, even though I was only there 9 months ago.  However the bad news would be that of more loss of sight in my damaged eye ... so, tomorrow afternoon I have an emergency appt.
The good news for both is that it's about 4 miles walk there & back ... so I can certainly have a biscuit, or two, later!
And, of course -
13. What brand are you most loyal to?
Cadbury chocolate
Kellogs cornflakes
... and due to allergy I have Stork block margerine
debris4spike: (Default)
Well I did say I was going to try to teach myself how to make banners, so although I am not happy overall, I am happier than I have been with some in the past ... Jack/Sam from SG1, for those who don't watch Stargate
sg1_818_0917
And. of course -
26. What’s your favorite breakfast food?
I love a cooked breakfast if I am actually staying in England, and in a hotel (which is rare!). I tend to eat the smae cereal every morning - Honey-Nut Shreddies ... but if having a late breakfast it's Frosties ... and all served with ice cold milk, and at least a couple of mugs of tea.
5 Do you tend to be more optimistic or pessimistic?
Optimistic.
6 How important is the decor of a restaurant to you?
I actually don't like eating out!
However if I do, I like "sensible" tables & chairs. One place that I have met my brother & sister-in-law at,that they love, has tiny tables, and soft chairs ... sorry, but weird!
27 Winter is soup time. What’s your favorite kind of soup? (Please post the recipe or source?)
I am not a fan of making soup - unless it's with leftovers, then I add tomatoes. Normally if I have soup, then it's just a cheepo chicken soup from the supermarket.
Now, if we had asked Mum she would have filled pages of recipes!
Yes, I Am A Weido
7 What kind of butter/margarine/butter-like spread do you favour?
At last a simple answer.
I only use one type, for everything .... Stork block margarine. For the non-Brit, it is a margarine that is normally only bought to use in making pastry, in combination with lard, But that is the only one my body tolerates ... and I truly love the flavour!
Yum
2. Kitchen: favourite comfort food?
Well, tonight being a Saturday I shall be eating Chicken & Chips (fries) ... still in the paper!  That is a great favourite.
I also love tomatoes, grapes (especially red ones), Cadbury milk chocolate, doughnuts, and roast chicken crisps (chips)
... Oh boy, now I am hungry!
57 - What food are you craving right now?
58 - What was the last dream you remember about?
59 - A habit you wish you didn’t have.
60 - Describe the room you’re in right now.
If you could do today over, would you change anything?
Yes, I would remember to take my fruit into work with the rest of my lunch! I forgot to put them in my bag!
Day 06 → talk about food this year
I will admit this last year I have cheated quite a bit by buying ready made meals.  There are some good meals out there, my favourite being beef stew and dumplings.
I have been a good girl and had salad every day.  When I take sandwiches to work I also take some tomatoes and cucumber, but if at home I have a salad for tea.  I have always eaten a lot of fruit, but never really been a good girl about veggies.
I have been getting back into baking recently, but tend to stick to favourite recipes ... I really must experiment.  (I get my new kitchen work-surfaces changed tomorrow, then I must "play")
debris4spike: (Tongue!)
If you could live off one food and one beverage for the rest of your days, what would they be?
FOOD
I think it would be roast chicken (preferably leg), chips (fries) or roast potatoes and  garden peas.
However I adore raw tomatoes, and in fact when I was 19 and very ill with measles I actually did live on them for a week - it was the only food I ate.
Fruit would definately be pineapple.
DRINK
Hard - I love cold tap water, but some places don't taste as nice as others, so maybe I had better say squash.  There is one I love, which is actually a cheepo brand, but I find it better than most.
However how can I lose a cup of strong tea?  ... so can I cheat and have both, please.
It has been some time, but there is a new meme going round that I saw on [livejournal.com profile] teragramm [livejournal.com profile] double_dutchess and [livejournal.com profile] deborahw37 so thought I would snag as I am trying to catch up with LJ and keep my journal more active.
Wow, where do the days go?    I have had a yukky few days, so I suppose that explains that!
Anyway, long walk to and from work this morning as it was on the "other" site ... but the other nurse there had made us all a piece of orange cheesecake to have with coffee ... what's not happy-making about cheesecake?
