Catching Up

I ended up having a lazy Sunday ... and felt better for it. The trouble then was that I ended up doing extra cleaning in the kitchen ... and payed for it!

So the rest of the day was lazy, and so was Tuesday morning ... then yesterday afternoon I had my physio appointment.

She was very pleased with progress ... but said I still have a way to go before I can either drive, or start to get rid of the crutches. I am frustrated, but there again she pointed out that the haematoma is still there, and reminded me that I came very close to needing surgical repair of the muscle. So, overall good news, but still a way to go. I am still walking every day, and really need to get Christmas organised ... I can only do bits at a time, so it means that I shall need to do a bit every week ... so that helps me with my walking exercise, as well as with Christmas. We have our family get-together in 10 days time ... I need to get someone to collect me on their way to Tim & Claires. I might be able to walk there OK, as it's only about a mile away, but, I can't walk and carry Nick & family's pressies (when I get them bought!).

As well as getting some Christmas letters written (I have ordered Christmas cards), I am doing some knitting ... and made some icons. The icons are something I love doing, but I can't sit too long without the leg raised, so not something I can do at my computer in my study.

This set were made for "favourite musician" and it has been an easy choice of favourites.

The first 2 are of James Marsters, and if you don't know, he played Spike in BtVS. I took these photos back in 2009.

The other 2 are of the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, taken in the 1940's. I love the music (although find it really hard to play!). However I had to share these early images, as one of Mum's memories was of hearing him play with the USAAF Band in Northamptonshire, not long before his final flight. So a favourite musician ... and a family memory.

1 . 2 . 3 . 4

So I need to get the leg rested ... so ...

24. Do you have throw pillows/cushions around the house?
I love cushions ... both to add personality, and to support my old back injury.

25. Is lunch a snack, a light meal, or your main meal of the day?
If I am able, I prefer it to be the main meal of the day ... but if I am out and about then it's more of a snack.  In other words, I don't mind, providing I don't miss the meal completely.

26. On National Cake Day – what is your favourite cake?
I love most types of cake ... except heavy/dark fruit cakes ... and carrot cake is not really a favourite either.

Right, let's get on

Will try and catch up with you later - but will admit it will probably b tomorrow now so I don't stress the injury too much.

Happy 4th July

I hope that all my friends in USA have a lovely 4th July.  In 2017 I was in Oregon City watching the fireworks ... then later on the trip visited Boston to see "the" balconey.

Enjoy yourselves, whatever you do (or don't do!)

Oooops, I forgot.

I did a few extra hours work over the last couple of days which meant that I was not around as much.  So, at least this time I had an excuse!

Actually both shifts went well, but today I am back to my normal afternoon, early evening hours.  So am here for a short time.

I am still trying to sort out the last set of photos and will get them posted as soon as I can (I promise).  However, as the title said, I do have 10 icons to share.

This set of icons is slightly late (but are still going to be OK!) and are all of a challenge with a theme of "compex". To make life a bit easier I made them all of James Marsters in the made-for-TV fim Cool Money (2005).

Right, so as I was busy at work I had no news to share, so I will finish with this catch-up -

2. Do you still use your local library?
No, but there again I have a pile of novels on my “to-read” pile, a Kindle, and shelves of travel & history books to look at.

3. Have you ever worn a hairpiece, wig or clip-on hair extensions? Do you know anyone who does?
No, my hair is thick and grows quickly … but I like it short.
A friend wears hairpieces when she is going out for the evening, as her hair is very, very thin.

4. Have you ever played Pickleball?
No

Right, let's see what you have all been up to

And, another real oops - I realise I have forgotten to check on the A to Z photos ... so looks like a task for tomorrow.

20 James Marsters Icons

Wednesday, May 21st, 2025 11:13 am
debris4spike: (Default)
I start with this post of 20 icons, for [community profile] characters20in20  all from the film
High Plains Invaders which is a film starring James Marsters ... so, yes, one I certainly had to watch!

I obviously wished too hard for learning work containing text, as this was another challenge in this set. We had to use at least 3 words from a song. In this case my choice of song was easy (and, no, I didn't know the challenge before I picked this film). James wrote and sang a song A Cappella about the back story of the film (and the words are below). For those who don't know the film, but worry about a couple of the scenes, the 2 of them do end up with a "happy" ending.

ALONE

Well I alone in Averenth
With my lady by my side
After wars I left her
And now she’s come to watch me die

She’s a flower in the sun
Now she’s crawlin’ through the mud
‘Cause a me, ’cause a me

My heart was sick, from killin’ Injuns
With their babies in their beds.
I refused but my General
Put his gun up to my head.

I wanted to come home
So Abby wouldn’t live alone
So I killed, burned them down

I woke up, cold dark morning
Saw a face in the mirror
Realized what I was bringing home
Wasn’t worth bringing anymore.

I tried to heal my sores
With robbin’, whisky and whores
Didn’t work. I was still bad

Sheriff – put the noose right around me
Pull it tightly, snap my neck
Don’t want my love to see me strangle
When my soul’s all blown to heck

So I’m alone in Averenth
With my lady watchin’ me die
I don’t know if I could bear it
To see poor Abby cry one more time.

This set of icons was made for Round 14 of [community profile] characters20in20

I chose the film "Moonshot" and, of course, James Marsters .... where he portrayed Buzz Aldrin

This set of icons is made for Monthly Battle #16 of [community profile] itsabattlefield .  We had a theme of Winter.

I decided I would share "one" of the reasons why I watch Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. I like the story lines on both, for an assortment of reasons ... but the other (main) reason is that both shows have a gorgeous actor to watch!!
(For those who don't know Stargate Atlantis is the upper set of 6)

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Most people who know me know how I got into fandom via the internet .... and that's through having my friend's teenage girls stay with me, and getting mesmerised by an actor's voice ... a season 7 episode of BtVS ... and the actor being James Marsters ... and,the rest is history.

However back in 1982 when a TV series finished I managed to spot a magazine advert for a fan club.

The TV show was called Blake's 7, and ran for 4 years, and has actually never been repeated (to my knowledge). It was a Sci Fi show, and the last episode saw most of the crew killed off, so no come-back.

Anyway, I sent away for details of "Horizon" and joined. About every 6 - 8 months we got a magazine with letters, articles, questions etc - it was written by fans for fans. About every 6 months we were also offered a short story book - so the first time of seeing fan-fics, although unlike AO3, you couldn't put a filter on the ones you wanted to see!

On a side note, I did actually write a letter to one of the magazines in the mid 90's and ended up meeting someone from the next town (I have an unusual surname) ... and Sharon & I are still friends.

And, yes, I still enjoy Blake's 7 ... occasionally making icons, and if there is a Cally/Avon fic on AO3, then I will read it.

Icons To Share

I know ... I am not here!  Actually the clinic I was due to work in got cancelled late yesterday as the equipment had died.  They are hoping to get it repaired in time for tomorrow ... but we shall see.

My car had to have the front brakes worked on ... and a new front tyre (but there again they had been saying it was wearing down over the last 2 years.  It still wasn't illegal, but now needed changing.)

So, thought I would share these icons from assorted comps with ItsaBattlefield over at DW ....

This set was for the re-launch monthly battle #1. with a theme of Black and Red ... and are all BtVS season 6

Today is National James Day ... what a great day to celebrate. There "may" be an actor with that name who I could celebrate ... or I could just say that it was Dad's 2nd name.

So many of the days seem very random ... I mean, look at some of the questions on the year meme, but thinking about James is, I think, a brilliant idea!

I do hope that you all had a great Easter.

I managed to get the garden sorted, and enjoyed Lily's first birthday, as I have already posted,

Easter Day was spent at Nick & Brenda's, and all the family in England who were in England were there and all went to Church together before a great Sunday lunch ... and while we were eating Dan & Meg phoned. They have just travelled to the Philippians, from Australia, so it was good to all be "together" despite the mileage.

Yesterday I met up with Tim & Claire and Brenda in the city of Wells, which is lovely and we had great weather, which is a shock for a Bank Holiday, and we also laughed a lot ... photos to follow.

I worked this morning ... but now want to get on with some photo sorting, so will close here ...

10 – International Safety Pin Day: Invented in 1849, where would we be without them? Or do you think there is less of a place for them in modern life than there was in the past?
There's always a place for a safety pin ... even if it's only to hold on my paper poppy come November 11th!

11 – Eight Track Tape Day: Eight Track Tape Day recognizes an era that was here and gone in a short 20 years. Are you old enough to remember eight tracks? Some technologies, like the Betamax, never caught on even though they were the superior product. Can that be said of eight tracks?

Yes, I remember 8-track, and Betamax.

12 – World Hamster Day: Did you know there are 24 different species of hamsters? Have you ever had a hamster as a pet?

No, but a pet-sat a couple when I was a mid teen ... and they survived the week!!

Right, let's get on x

Hi

debris4spike: (Default)
Just briefly popping in to post, and will try to catch up later (even though I said that yesterday and failed ... sorry)

Work went well, even though the first patient was very angry that he had to "waste his time" at the appt! His surgeon wanted the result before his op, and he spent the whole time he was there complaining (in a very loud voice!)

I have done some icons for moviefilmstills which is now over at D/W ... I still don't like the site and only go there to get the icon challenges, and to post them there! Although once a week I do export my LJ over there, so people can't say I am ignoring them! Anyway ... The challenge was for a film from a favourite actor, and as anyone who knows me, knows I am a James Marsters fan, and although he has done mostly TV work, he has made a couple of films ... one of which is High Plains Invader

14. Is there something dumb or ridiculous that you did that actually turned out pretty well?
Does taking up riding count?

Hope you are all having a good day ... we have sun here, so am going to sit outside for a short time. Catch up later x

I managed to do 10 icons ... although had planned to make more.  This set is for Round 16 of [livejournal.com profile] somein30 and the theme is, again, music.  The last set had the same basic theme, but this had to be from  specific songs.  So I chose 2 favourites, and made 5 from each song.

... but I have just got back from collecting my prescription. I have been taking Thyroxine for about 10 years, and todays boxes are a lot bigger than the normal ones. Just a small piece of cardboard, I know, but multiply that by many thousands ... and that is a lot of extra paper.

Oh well - at least I have the treament I need, so on a scale of one to ten, that's the important fact ... thank you NHS

As I don't really have any news I thought I would post a few icons from posts where they had to be entered secretly. .... As ever, they are all snaggable, and the credits are mostly over on my icon journal, [livejournal.com profile] d4s_icons

Right, that's me up to date ... see you Monday
debris4spike: (Default)
I work with different physiologists but we always dread Monday morning clinics! Funny as the patients are just beeoked in randomly. Yet this morning proved the point. We had 1 no-show, and yet with one missing we still managed to finish half-an-hour late. 3 of the 4 were nice people, but it just seemed to get later & later & later! Oh well, as it turns out I am only doing 2 clinics this week, so that's not too bad overall (and at least the morning went really quickly!)

I am not usually a Facebook user, but have a link here - Dixie Fire- Rebuild Greenville, CA Yesterday as I was looking through Instagram as that is one site I do like I found a posting from James. The town he grew up in was totally destroyed by the latest fires in California. He has posted the fund-raising link ... and no, I'm not advertising, just really reminding myself how much damage is happening again this year. There are also problems in Greece ... so much loss and sadness. I just hope that there is not too much loss of life, human or animal.

Now I have my clarinet to practice ,,, and a short walk to do. Then I must give my friend Toni a ring to catch up with, before Brenda comes.

But, as ever -

9. Which holiday is your favorite to decorate for?
I only decorate for Christmas

Can I Have A Gold Star?

I was a good girl and after lunch I did walk the long way round to the shops (I needed milk). So despite the rain I have still done my mile-long walk that I like to do a minimum of after work. In fact earlier I was also able to answer this week's prompt for [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger as this week we are thinking UMBRELLA.  And, yes, we certainly need our brollies today - this one I have had for ages, butt still love it (and used it this morning to walk to & from work).  And now, as you can see, I don't feel it's unlucky to have one open in a house ...
DSC_0272
Thought I would show you the image.  I have always thought it looked as if the puppy is smoking, rather than just lying in straw
DSC_0273

So after a weird clinic (as I said to the physiologist that all the patients were "odd".  They weren't totally weird, but just meant the clinic overall was weird)

Now I am thawing out again and plan to do some art work before heading back to the lounge for a lazy afternoon.  But, as ever (I even corrected the English on this one ... sorry USA!)

13. Can you do maths in your head well?
Pretty basic stuff, yes (not as good as my brother Nick), but can add up my shopping as I go, etc. And roughly change metric to imperial.

And, finally -
I must wish [livejournal.com profile] spikereader a Happy Birthday - hoping she is having a good day, and it will be the start of a great year.
And, remembering being with her at James Marsters events in London
debris4spike: (Default)
Not doing too badly now ... but not doing too well either! So it's a brief visit, to catch up with questions -

22. What would you change if you knew you could not fail?
I suppose the obvious answer is I would get rid of Covid19 ... that has caused so much sadness, so many changes. So let's back time and stop that from ever happening.

23. If you could get rid of anything on the planet what would it be?

LOL - same answer again! let's get rid of Covid ... and pollution. Well, I got rid of Covid in the previous answer!

And for those who know - yes, I am still a James Marsters fan. Sad to hear that his wife has left him. So hope he will be at peace with that decision.

Challenge #10

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I had wondered who I would write to, but there again there was the one obvious answer. And, seeing as whta I wrote about in the previous Snowflake Challenge I decided I would go to the "obvious" answer. So, for those who know me, you will know who/what I mean ....

Dear James,

Thank you for more than I can say.  I first spotted you in one of the latter episodes of Buffy and you literally lept off the screen.  You were portraying 2 aspects of your Spike character, and both were different, yet believable - an amazing actor.  So I decided to watch to the end of the series.  And was really upse (I doubt it's a spoiler), but Spike died at the end of the series.  They re-showed the series and I watched it and was still upset to see you die.

So for the first time I decided to "put pen to paper" to give a better ending.  Yes, James, years of being told I couldn't write never really came to mind.  I tried to see if others felt like I did and discovered fandom and the internet.  So, do I thank you for all the time I have now wasted!  However in doing that I discovered fanfic web sites, and in doing that realised that "beta's" were available ... and in hunting for someone to help me come to terms with "your death" I found LiveJournal.  And found other people who loved your acting work ... and loved your singing.  Wow, a double win ... Ghost of the Robot was my next discovery.

As I started scribbling more in LJ I realised that I wanted to have other icons to decorate my page ... yes, I found the comms, but also decided to have a go at downloading an image and cutting it to the size I wanted to .... So, yet again, James I need to thank you for getting me to attempt artwork.  Over the last 10+ years I have continued to stretch myself, and have fun ... so thank you for giving me another hobby.

As I said, GotR was what I heard about, and then friends talked of your personal singing and concerts ... as well as your trips to England occasionally to perform to your fans.  So at the age of 46 I decided to go to my first ever music concert/gig ... so thank you for an amazing evening in London.  That evening could have gone on for ever!  Many of my friends were going to more than one event that you were doing on that visit, and I decided to stay in London, and then travel to Milton Keynes to get your autograph ... and when I was there I had my photo taken with you.  That split second was so special.  years of bullying has left me totally withdrawn, and unhappy about my looks etc.  Yet you made me feel special ... for that moment (and when you signed my autograph) you made me feel so important ... thank you.

I have seen you in other films, listened to you on Audio Books, f a few times and am always taken in by you ... not in the wrong sense, but you just make me part of that event.  Thank you so much.

So, James, you have given me new hobbies, and friends, both of which I would never have had without your portrayal of Spike.

I hope & pray that you realise how much love there is out in fandom for you ... how much pleasure & fun you have brought to so many.

Wishing you a special 2021
Love, Deborah

Challenge #3

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As most of you can guess by my usename I am a Spike (from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer) fan - and oh, yes, I would love James (the actor) to come round for a meal!

However, at present I am also reading a lot of Star Trek, Voyager fanfic ... and i would love to have Captain Janeway over for tea. That way I could tell her that she could be "with" Chakotay, as well as having him as her 2nd officer.

Someone else I would love to meet was the composer who wrote the music (especially the incidental music) for the film Last of the Mohicans. I have always loved the background music, even though most people never ever notice it ... but that film is special. I realised I was listening to the music all the time, and enjoying their relationship to the film.

(But maybe I will just stick with my original plan of having James visit me!)

In your own space, talk about your fannish history

Some yeras ago I had my friend's daughter staying with me. She watched Buffy as a series, which I didn't. However that evening as she was watching it I walked into the room to offer her a coffee and was totally "grabbed" by the character on the screen. I ended up watching the whole episode, and was captured by the story so watched the next few episodes of the series.

Well, that was Spike, and episode "Lies my parents told me" from season 7. I was stunned by his acting and the story that I both picked up, and that Kayleigh filled in the back-story of.

Sadly within a couple of weeks the series (and the show finished) ... and I was shocked by the ending.

Having been told at school that I was no good at English I had always believed this. But I was still reeling with the finish of BtVS, and had found fan-fic. So I decided to have a go at how I would bring Spike & Buffy together ... and I wrote my first ever fic ... It's All A Question Of Timing

In my hunt for stories as well as discovering fan-fic, I discovered LiveJournal.

In finding LJ I needed icons.  To start with I got a couple from communities, and then just trimming a few screencaps.  As I am colourblind I had also been told at school that art wouldn't be for me.  But with an increasing friend base I found some who suggested I give it a go with a free photo editing suite.

So now I still make icons ... I can't do animated ones (I wish I could), I can't really do banners (again I wish I could), but love doing them.  Thanks LJ (& DW) for the icon competitions ... not that I am great, but I enjoy it.

I do want to get back to writing ... but some of that is lack of a regular beta ... and procratination.

But, overall my thanks will always go back to say THANK YOU JAMES ... without your portrayal of Spike I would never be tying this today
