I suppose like most people I have been horrified by the images from around LA - having a close friend living there made it all the more personal, even though I am thousands of miles away.

So much destruction - so much loss.

Some years ago I has a burst pipe in my loft and had quiet a bit of damage, but was so thankful that I didn't lose any personal items.

All I can think of are things like Mum & Dad's wedding photos, my Granddad's medals, etc. etc ... Those things are irreplaceable. A TV is not. So yes, a lot of loss, that can never be replaced!

As it's Monday, I have my A to Z photo(s) ... I missed last week - so -

Week 2 – Jan 5 B is for BOWL
Over 40 years ago, on my 21st, friends from college bought me this bowl, and a few years later when I got my house it was put in use ... and has been ever since -
IMG_20250113_144918

Week 3 – Jan 12 C is for CALM
Back in 1981 I went, with the family, to Italy for the first time, and we spent about 10 days in Sorrento. I bought this marquetry image of the bay of Naples, showing a very calm image ... and a calm Vesuvius in the background -
IMG_20250113_145028

On top of these photos, I have also taken last week's image for [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger, with a prompt of "chair" ....
This rocking chair has always been in my life. Dad stripped the wood, and varnished it 40ish year ago (I know historians would not be happy) ... Mum re-caned the back of it, and made a tapestry seat. And, Primrose was Mum's ... and is now 100+ years old, as it was second hand when she received it as a young child. The dress she is wearing was actually one of Mum's when she was a baby.

I worked on Saturday, again.

Yesterday I had a nice lazy day ... although an early start as I went to a diffenert Church to normal (for a few reasons), and it was early. But it was a nice day overall ... just reading, chatting to a friend on the phoe, and generally being lazy!

I worked again this morning, and now here this afternoon ... so ...

11. How good are you at creating routines for housework? Do you have specific days for doing household tasks?
No
Mum used to have specific days for specific tasks, and even over Christmas it was only the 25th itself that lost its scheduled job. (Well, and if New Year's Day was a Monday Mum wouldn't do the washing!!)

12. In 1966 Adam West debuted in TV’s Batman. Do you have a favourite actor who has taken on the Batman role on TV or in film?
Sad to say, I love that series.

But, there again, Val Kilmer made a lovely Batman, in Batman Forever!

13. What’s the weather like where you live today? Is it typical for your area at this time of year?
Cold and greay ... overcast. But, at least it's dry.

Right, let's get this posted x

I do hope, whichever way, the USA votes that it will end up best for the country ... best for the world.

However today, in England, we celebrate "Bonfire Night."

For those who don't know it is to commemorate Guy Fawkes ... who was one of the conspirators who planned to blow up the King (James I) on the opening of Parliament in 1605.

As is often said ... he is possibly the only man to enter parliament with a clear agenda.

So, how ironic that as we remember The Gunpowder Plot, USA has gone to the polls to elect their new President.

Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Most of us know the beginning of the poem ... but that was all of it.

Well I am off to London tomorrow for Remembrance weeked.

I am looking forward to it, except that the bugs that stopped me meeting up with Brenda yesterday are a bit worse, so I spoke to the GP and he has started me on antibiotics for a chest infection.

So that is annoying, but atleast I can start treatment today and not have to go hunting for a hospital over the next couple of days.

As a result of me being away ....

5. Do you like fireworks displays, or are they just annoying at this time of year? Have you ever made your own fireworks display at home?
Until I was 12 we always had a firework display at home … I have fond memories of them.
I think the last large display I went to was 4th July 2017 when I was in Oregon. That was special, as well.

6. Pockets or a handbag/purse? Are you guilty of carrying things you don’t need in a bag because you haven’t decluttered for a while?
Pockets, please. Not really a fan of a handbag, at all.

7. Do you have a favourite apple?
I like most of them.

8. In 1895 German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen produced and detected electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range today known as X-rays or Röntgen rays. Have you ever had your feet X-rayed?
Possibly as a child, as it used to be “normal” in some shoe shops.
The last time was back in 1982, when I was run over … they had to check on the injuries of both my ankles.

9. Wes Craven’s ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ premiered in the US in 1984. Have you ever seen it? Are you a fan of horror films?
Never seen it – and not a fan of the horror genre.

10. If calories didn’t affect your weight and you didn’t have to worry about the health implications, what would be your favourite thing to eat as a treat every single day?
Proper chips, from a good chip shop.

11. It’s Calista Flockhart’s birthday – did you ever watch Ally McBeal?
No

See you on the 12th x

Another Lovely Morning

Not as much fun as yesterday ... no ice-cream this time, but I had cake!

I picked up Claire this morning and we went to the garden centre again.  Yes, Claire did some shopping again, but at least this time we had time for tea & cakes.

In a moment I am back into work ... so ...

15 – Nature Photography Day: Have you ever enjoyed a photo of a flower? Or a close up of a bee landing on the entrance to its hive? Have you taken any photos of nature that you're particularly proud of? Care to share it with us?
I love taking photos of flowers , and as I have just posted I take photos of mountains, as well. I think one of my favourite nature photos is this one of Mt St Helens in USA (and I actually use it on my Facebook banner), and another is the rose that is also on my Facebook as my picture

Anyway this set of icons is made for round 30 of [community profile] icons10in20 with a country theme. So I chose USA and all the photographs used were taken by myself on my trip to USA in 2017 in California or Boston.

These are for Challenge 175 at [livejournal.com profile] moviefilmstills  and the prompt os a "free for all".  It's hard to decide what to do!

So I have made 5 icons from the film "Some Like It Hot" ... it was my Dad's favourite film, and one I love.  When I was in California I went to the Coronado Hotel (and used the loo!!)  So lots of fun memories as I made these

Enjoy!

I work with different physiologists but we always dread Monday morning clinics! Funny as the patients are just beeoked in randomly. Yet this morning proved the point. We had 1 no-show, and yet with one missing we still managed to finish half-an-hour late. 3 of the 4 were nice people, but it just seemed to get later & later & later! Oh well, as it turns out I am only doing 2 clinics this week, so that's not too bad overall (and at least the morning went really quickly!)

I am not usually a Facebook user, but have a link here - Dixie Fire- Rebuild Greenville, CA Yesterday as I was looking through Instagram as that is one site I do like I found a posting from James. The town he grew up in was totally destroyed by the latest fires in California. He has posted the fund-raising link ... and no, I'm not advertising, just really reminding myself how much damage is happening again this year. There are also problems in Greece ... so much loss and sadness. I just hope that there is not too much loss of life, human or animal.

Now I have my clarinet to practice ,,, and a short walk to do. Then I must give my friend Toni a ring to catch up with, before Brenda comes.

But, as ever -

9. Which holiday is your favorite to decorate for?
I only decorate for Christmas
debris4spike: (USA)
I have done this in the past, but had to snag from [livejournal.com profile] bubblesbrnaid and will admit that a couple of the States I literally have only been in for a short time on the way to to somewhere

This is from 3 trips 1989, 1994 and 2017 ... and I aim to return!!

Edinburgh Photos (1)

If you love graveyards then Edinburgh is certainly a place to go. Literally around the Old Town are 4 Kirkyards/Burial Grounds that I went to, and a little further out were even more. Burial in Churches was banned in the 1660's, and so the elaborate memorials we see in English Churches just moved outside ... and amazingly are still in good condition.

However, anyone who doesn't like graves has to go and see one grave, of they never visit another ... that of Greyfriars' Bobby. Just outside the Kirkyard is his statue, and it is good luck to rub his nose. I don't actually believe in luck, but still couldn't resist. And for those who are confused, I will "borrow" Wikipedia ...

Bobby belonged to John Gray, who worked for the Edinburgh City Police as a nightwatchman. When John Gray died he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, the kirkyard surrounding Greyfriars Kirk in the Old Town of Edinburgh. Bobby then became known locally, spending the rest of his life sitting on his master's grave.

In 1867 the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir William Chambers, who was also a director of the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, paid for Bobby's licence and gave the dog a collar, now in the Museum of Edinburgh.

Bobby is said to have sat by the grave for 14 years. He died in 1872 and was buried just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard, not far from John Gray's grave.

A few views around Greyfriars, and Carlton Hill Kirkyards )

While I was in Edinburgh, as I said I couldn't get to Holyrood as the Queen was in residence ... however I did get to see the Church she went to on the Sunday morning (although I went to the Cathedral instead!!). She goes to Canongate Church .... and yet again, it has an amazing Kirkyard

Hi

... Just got back from Bonnie Scotland ... exhausted, both from a super week, but also a 14 hour overnight coch trip.  So I won't be catching up with you all (sorry), but have got to get myself "sort of" organised!! Especially as I am working om Saturday.

Anyway, a super trip, that I really enjoyed.

Jiffy is asleep behind me - he loves his new holiday home, and actually last weekend he "did" Glastonbury.  The family decided they were going to have an open house and party the weekend away, and although it was for Glastonbury, I think Jiffy turned out to be the star attraction!

Anyway, as today is the 4th, I do have to wish all you Colonials the happiest of days, and hope that you have managed to cope for another year without us!!!

Catch Up Time

At least the viral bugs are easing ... and the pain from the salivary gland infection is almost gone ... so am feeling more positive.  So much so I made some lemon biscuits today (which are rapidly disappearing!!)

I haven't gone to Auntie Joyce's today - both with me not feeling like pushing it, and having to do the drive; but also she is not feeling great.  When I spoke to her earlier this week we agreed that I would go up there in another months time.

I don't know if others in England have been watching the Michael Portillo American train show, well I have really enjoyed the last few days as he has been travelling to Boston, Salem, etc ... So bringing back great good memories of the last week of the holiday last July.  As most of you didn't see my blog, I thought I would share a couple of photos -

Hi - Remember Me?

Saturday, July 29th, 2017 03:40 pm
debris4spike: (USA)
I am back - and to say that the last month was amazing is such an understatement.  Brilliant, fantastic .... etc, etc.

I still am not up to date with my holiday blog, but am getting there.  For those who didn't follow it, but want to have a look, the first post is here .... it will save me having to import my photos. However, as I took over 3,500, if anyone wants to see more of anything, they only have to ask.

Hope you all had a good month - sorry I missed birthdays etc, but was staying off-line as much as I could so people who know me wouldn't realise my house was empty.

Did I miss any vital news, if so let me know ... otherwise, it will be a day or 2 before I am fully organised, then ... watch out!
debris4spike: (Oooops - Cap'n John)
I owe replies, I haven't caught up with my f-list .... I am just so, so bad!

But I am determined to start catching up, starting today.  In about 1/2 hours time Jiffy and I are heading out to pick up my friend Christine, have a walk and lunch at a doggy friendly place.  I am taking my camera but as the decorator is still in I can't get at my main computer so won't share today .... but will asap.

Anyway, what's up with me?  Not much!

I am having my kitchen painted at present, and yesterday the same painter finished painting my bedroom.  The carpet arrives next week.  So hopefully as the days and weeks now move on I shall be able to start packing things away in their permenant homes.  I have decided to have a sunlounge off my kitchen, so there is that to confirm and book ... and then the only thing I will eventually need is a new lounge carpet and the room painted.

No further on my holiday plans, as I am waiting for Annemarie to confirm the dates with her.  So annoying, as I dare-say flights, etc will be going up in price.   So am still at the vague point of Oregon - LA - San Fransisco - Visiting a friend in Missouri.  Will update, when I can.

Jiffy is doing well - slightly confused by stuff being moved around all the time, so it will be nice to get him settled again.

Having been a bit on-off with the gym, I have gone twice last week, already once this week, and booked for a class on Friday.

I have had a week or two of drifting, but I am determined to get myself back on track.  I will catch up with comments, re-post a gift I owe (!), and try to keep up to date with all your journals.  Bear with me - I will get there!

Well I had better get on and get Jiffy ready.

I know I have missed a few birthdays over this last week sorry - but on the day that would have been Mum's 89th birthday, I do hope you had a good day, and the year ahead is special.

Be back later *hugs*

With so much said (and done) yesterday, I have one random question.

It has been noted that the Bible that was used yesterday was one given to the President by his grandma.  However, my question is ....

What is in the box under it?  The Bible is on a red box.  In the photos of President Obama, Michelle held the Bible in her hands, however Melania is holding (in gloves) a red box, with the Bible on top.

I know in the whole scheme of world plans it's not important ... I'm just nosy!!

Happy, happy memories of Annemarie and Bob's wedding 25 years ago ..... and of visiting -

Niagra Falls

The Smokey Mountains (and a Cherokee settlement)

Haven't had much LJ time as I had a couple of busy shifts, Bible Study and Toni popped over for an hour - so all good in my life, but means I haven't been LJing.

Hoping all is well with my friends - I heard today on the radio that there has been loss of life, as well as property.

So am praying that you are all safe.
