I do love music from the 1960's and on free TV Britain has a programme showing 60's music all the time. If I have a lazy-ish I tend to watch some of it with a lazy cuppa. This morning was one of those days ... and here are a couple of those on this morning. I tend to forget how long the Stones have been around ... and for my The Animals sang "House of the Rising Sun", so that was an odd song, and an unusual combination.

Enjoy

The Rolling Stones - It's All Over Now - 1964

The Animals/Sammy Davis Jnr - The Rain In Spain (1965)

I have just had Christine on the phone. We normally chat on a Sunday, but her dad (at 95) is in hospital at present, so she will be there tomorrow.  He is doing well, and hopes to be home again in a few days.

I have made some ginger biscuits before that ... so now I am almost ready to get some lunch, make a sandwich for tea, and then head off to work.  But, as ever -

11 – World Plumbing Day: We take indoor plumbing for granted – until there's a problem with it. Have you ever suffered a major plumbing emergency? Have you ever tried to fix a plumbing issue on your own? Did you succeed?
Back in 1996 I had a burst pipe in my loft.  I am lucky I was in the house at the time, so was able to turn the water off at the mains.  But that is as complicated as my plumbing gets ... in my present house that tap is in the kitchen (or I have a stop-cock outside on the pavement)

12 – Craft Month: Do you enjoy being creative? What crafts do you participate in? What crafts would you like to try out?
I do quite a bit ... although not as much as I used to when I lived near Toni.  She is amazing at all crafts.
I knit, crochet, cross-stitch, do tapestry, and make icons on the computer.  I would love to try pottery.

Right, let's get on.

Hope you all have a good weekend x

Challenge #3

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As most of you can guess by my usename I am a Spike (from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer) fan - and oh, yes, I would love James (the actor) to come round for a meal!

However, at present I am also reading a lot of Star Trek, Voyager fanfic ... and i would love to have Captain Janeway over for tea. That way I could tell her that she could be "with" Chakotay, as well as having him as her 2nd officer.

Someone else I would love to meet was the composer who wrote the music (especially the incidental music) for the film Last of the Mohicans. I have always loved the background music, even though most people never ever notice it ... but that film is special. I realised I was listening to the music all the time, and enjoying their relationship to the film.

(But maybe I will just stick with my original plan of having James visit me!)

Earlier today I took Jiffy for his haircut (so it will probably snow tomorrow), and I had a selection of  60's & 70's music, and just as I was pulling into Exeter this piece was on ....
Status Quo - Rockin All Over The World

And I sang along at the top of my voice .... and the look Jiffy gave me made me wish I could have taken a photo (and this from a dog who is pretty deaf).  I don't know if it was Quo, or me, but he really didn't approve!

Sorry Jiffy!

First Music Gig

Monday, June 29th, 2020 02:38 pm
debris4spike: (Default)
Yesterday morning as I was waking up one of the questions that the radio show was asking, was about first gigs/concerts.  Most of you who know me know that James was my first one, although I had played in numerous orchestral & band concerts.

However my story is Mum

1944, she was just 16.  She lived in a village in Northamptonshire and within 5 miles of the village, there were 3 USAAF airdromes.  Well they had a concert at the closest one, and althugh her parents weren't pleased she decided to go - after all it was in daylight & free .... so that gave her an advantage.

So, yes, she went.  It was packed with the staff, and locals, as concerts during the war were good for moral, but also everyone knew who the performers were (that's why Mum wanted to go)

Well, have you guessed ...

Yes, it was the Glen Miller Band.  He memory of everything always mentioned the fact that between note the band chewed gum.

So, if you are going to have a "first", then Glen Miller is about as good as you get!!!!

Glenn Miller & The Army Air Force Band - "IN THE MOOD" - November 13, 1943
I had to share this piece as it's one of my favourites, and one when I was in a Band I always found hard to play!!

And this is a picture of her about a year later -

debris4spike: (James - eyes)
A couple of days ago I had my annual eye-test.  I go to Boots, which means I see a different optician every time.  I saw a very nice lady this time, but as she sat down I knew she had bad news.  However, as it turned out, it wasn't as bad as she had thought!

One of the tests I had done was the individual eye field of vision, and that is what she wanted to start with ... She needed to tell me I had tested as 50% vision in my right eye.  However it was my turn to reassure her!  I had surgery in that eye back in 1989, and for a few hours I had been totally blind ... then I told her to look at the photo of the rtina.  She was then suprised I could see anything at all!

So, as I pointed out, I have 3/4 vision, but am not really aware of the fact as my left eye compensates most of the time.  On even more good news, no need to change the glasses prescription (so no big bill), and the loss of vision is only marginal compared to last year.

So all in al a positive trip.

And continuing to be positve - lets keep up ....

14 If being permanently stapled to a cello would somehow bring about world peace would you be prepared to be permanently stapled to a cello? It would hurt a little bit and you would never quite be able to escape the pain but there would be world peace and you could learn to play the cello.

i am a clarinetist.  I am a saxophonist.  I don't like stringed instruments ... however at least it's a cello and not a violin.  So, for world peace, ummmmmmm, maybe!!

I have finished a set of icons for Round 20 of [livejournal.com profile] monthlyinspo, with a theme of musically.

As many of you know I used to be a clarinettist in an orchestra, and I do miss it.  I also was a member of a wind band, where the majority were ex-military bandsmen (in fact a couple were still in the Marine reserves)

I thought I would share a couple of pieces of music that we did play at concerts with the band.

debris4spike: (Dad)
39 - Put your iPod on shuffle and write down the first ten songs that pop up.

  1. Pomp & Circumstance No 4

  2. All that she wanted - James Marsters

  3. Bad - James Marsters

  4. Katie - James Marsters

  5. Bless 'em all

  6. Blocking Brainwaves - Ghost of the Robot

  7. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

  8. Be Thou my vision

  9. Long Tall Sally - Elvis Presley

  10. Bye Bye, love - Everley Brothers

Honest. I didn't cheat 3 (4) are James Marsters.

40 - What were your highs and lows of the past year?

Obviously loosing Dad was the low point ... as was helping him to cope with loosing Mum and also his independence. Although I do have some good memories of some of those days.

So spending time with Dad was special ... as was my trip to London. I plan to go back to London in November again, and know I will see Dad again in Eternity.

Day 07 → talk about music this year

Oooops, was going to post this yesterday and then got distracted when the plumber came to remove the sink and gas hob ready for today ... and didn't get back to LJ

Anyway, as I type this there is an old Christmas CD playing while the kitchen is being worked on.

I haven't really heard much that has really caught my imagination, although I have a clock radio, so wake to music.

I haven't been to any live music, unless singing hymns in Church counts.  Acyually as I typed that I realised it was a lie!!!  I went with Dad to a couple of their sing-along entertainments that he had at his home.  Even got roped into doing the Hokey Cokey with the entertainments officer at one of them!

I haven't been involved in any music either this year, but have decided that next year I want to get back to my clarinet. So am looking into lessons, or something, otherwise I will never practice regularly.

Music

Over the last few days it seems as if a few of my f-list have listed some songs, or music details.  Well I had to go to the dentist again today, for the tooth problem that started at Easter.  She took an impression for a plate to fill the gap, but doubts I can have one as my bite is wrong ... I do think at 55 it's a bit late to change that!!  Anyway, we wait and see what the technitions say.

Anyway, back to music.  As well as inheriting photos, jewellery, books etc from Mum I also gained an increase in her CDs.  I was listening to some this morning in the car (well I have to use a USB) and heard one song which I admit to loving ....

Not quite a 2016 #1, but fun none the less!
debris4spike: (James - Rock On!)
What Band or Musician is Important to you?

I was born in 1961, so as a kid the radio was on - The Beatles, The Seekers, The Monkees, The Beach Boys .... and I still do like their stuff.  Weirdly, having no friends at school (due to bullying) I was isolated, so much of the 70's music passed me by then, but I do like it now ... The Rolling Stones being my favourite of the bunch.  From then on nothing!

I also love music of the 20's, singers like Frank Sinatra; and classical music, especially Beethoven.

HOWEVER

As my longer term f-list will know, there is only one singer I have heard live, and one band gig I have ever been to.

James Marsters, and Ghost of the Robot (although James was not there as he was filming).  I will admit that I loved the atmosphere of GotR, but if I had to pick just one event, it would be James by himself (not that I don't like Charlie, Sullivan, etc), but I like how he relates to his audience while performing.

So, yes please - more James Marsters!!!
debris4spike: (James singing - music notes)
Today I had to leave work early, but in that I had the advantage that I was able to collect my new CD/DVD towers.  In this area there is a very active free-recycle of all sorts of things ... and someone offered 3 six foot towers ... so that was great to be able to get those.
debris4spike: (James - London 2010 - double image)
It may be corny but I do like this song ... and it was playing as my clock-radio turned on this morning.

Great way to start the day with a smile
debris4spike: (James - London 2010 - double image)
Day 1 - a picture of myself.
Day 2 - 20 facts about myself.
Day 3 - favourite quote.
Day 4 - What are you afraid .

Day 5 - 10 Favourite Songs

So I have to find 10 songs ... well, other than James nothing is going to be recent!

London City - James
Goodnight Sweet Girl - Ghost of the Robot
In My Room - The Beach Boys
What Is This Thing Called Love - Frank Sinatra
Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley
Can't Smile Without You - The Carpenters
Love Me Do - The Beatles
True Love Ways - Buddy Holly
You're The Inspiration - Chicago
Albatross - Fleetwood Mac

It was hard to pick 10 ... so maybe, as I click post I shall think of others!

Things have been quiet so I answered [livejournal.com profile] lupina78's meme prompt ... and these are the 5 questions she asked:-

1. I know you´re a very talented musician. Is there an instrument you wished you could play, but never really got the hang of it?
2. What´s your favourite food?
3. If you´d have the chance to go anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?
4. What´s the one thing you own that means everything to you? Like, an item with great sentimental value.
5. Aaand last but not least, what´s your favourite Buffy episode?

ExpandYes, I have answers )

So - if you want 5 questions just ask!

I have snagged, and adapted this meme from [livejournal.com profile] bangel_4e

She did her answers using gifs .... but I have decided to do it uing shuffle on my Media Player (which is on as am typing this anyway)

So - it's a list of questions, and the answer is (in my case) the next song to play ... without cheating!

1) Your parents' reaction when you were born:
"(You're) Finer Than Gold" - James ... LOL, I was a much wanted baby!

2) How you felt on your first day of school:

ExpandRead more... )

I will admit I had to drop a couple of questions as they were totally N/A ... sex, smoking pot, being dumped, wedding night, etc ...

The weird thing is how much my pc loves James ... I have his tracks on there only once, with about 500 other songs.  No wonder I like spending time on my computer.

LOL - even my new Media Player likes me. I am just re-uploading my James music on it, and it is playing on shuffle. No, I didn't get my favourite, but the first track that it played was Fall of Night - my second favourite -

And, guess what it then played the same track again immediately after (weird shuffle), but as I love the song, I'm not worried ... especially as after that it went into I think my least favourite one!
