Challenge #4

IceBreaker Challenge! Tell us about yourself. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It wasn't until I saw another one posted just now I noticed I had forgotten to do this.

I think you all know everything, but there was a link to follow if you didn't know what to do ... so I clicked & followed the Random Questions Generator, and this is what I got ...

1) Do you have something special that picks you up when you feel down? What is it?
My faith

2) Is it better to read books in electronic form or actually hold the book?
I do have a couple of Kindles (one I take to work), but am also happy to pick up a book. In actual fact, if I am looking at history/geography I much prefer an actual book, rather than my Kindle

3) What do you wish you had learned five years before you did?
Horse-riding (although I hadn't met my teacher/best friend then, so that wouldn't have worked!!)

4) What was a past passion that you can't believe you were so passionate about?
Fencing - I really enjoyed it, but it is just such a random sport (and how I got involved, even more random)

5) Which of your past teachers would you like to sit down with and talk to today?
My art teacher - to tell him that I can do art, despite being colourblind
My chemistry teacher, to thank him for all his support
...... In fact quite a few of my teachers I would like to say Thank you, to ... and my Eglish teacher when I was 13/14 I would like to punch on the nose!!
debris4spike: (James - Q&A 2011)
Wow, it's the last day of August, how did that happen?

I am all behind with things ... anyway, here is the meme finished. I won't be doing next months as I will be off-line for the first couple of days as I am going on holiday.

27 Would you rather have an amazingly fast typing speed or be able to read ridiculously fast?
Seeing as I now work in a office with someone who types fast that was a possibility, although I suppose I am slowly increasing spead, with practice.
However as I type this I am surrounded by books, both fiction and non, which I say I would love to read ... so, reading fast (providing I can take it in) is the winning vote.

28 What's your favourite phone app? Should I get it?
I only have a basic phone - no apps!

29 What’s the weirdest conversation you’ve overheard?
I work in a clinic situation, and sometimes as I am walking through the waiting roomI hear two people discussing their problem ... it's amazing how much human biology gets twisted around!
However I suppose the winner would have to be my grandma, who was a hypercondriac, and when dad told her that he was going to have an op on his prostate did inform him that she had better get an appt with her doc to get hers checked out (I would have loved to have heard that conversation!)

30 If you could have an all-expenses paid trip to see any famous world monument or natural feature, which monument or feature would you choose?
Does Venice count?
If not, then the Christ Redeemer Statue, in South America

31 Who is your favourite Claire?
Well I only know one, and that is my sister-in-law ... and most of the time she is a good friend.

I Am Ahead!

Saturday, August 17th, 2019 03:12 pm
debris4spike: (Ow - look of shock on face)
17 Would you rather be Kermit or Fozzie Bear?

Seeing as I am not really a fan of frogs, then Fozzy

18 What was your most devastating unrequited crush?

Oh, I have always wanted the unattainable ... a boy at school called Mark (ironically we are now friends on FB!!), and a guy at college called Alex, are 2 that spring to mind.

###

And, yes, for the observant, I am a day ahead. However tomorrow I am going to drive to Colchester (in Essex) and back to visit my Aunt (dad's sister), who at the age of 92 broke her hip. She had the surgery yesterday, so need to go and see her.

At least it is motorway/dual carriageway all the way ... however as part of that is the M25 (I will say no more about that, but I can hear my English friends shuddering!!).

She is not the easist of people (never has been), so hopefully the op won't have affected hger mentally. The hospital seemed happy with her this morning when I rang. But I must wait & see.

###

Hope your weekend is going well xx

2 More Answers

debris4spike: (World travel)
15 What life-altering things should every human ideally get to experience at least once in their lives?

I have seen a couple of different answers to this.
One person said LOVE, but as I have yet to know about that, I don't think I can give that as an answer.
The other is a HOLIDAY TRIP, well I do love those.  However I do know some people who go away, and they never open their eyes or minds to what they see, so it would be a waste of time.
So, my answer is ... don't know!!

16 Is it better to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond?
For me a small fish - I am not a leader, and love both my jobs now, where I am a minion.
debris4spike: (Umm ...)
11 In 40 years time what will people be nostalgic for?
Brains!
People rely on their phones for everything now ... it's one of my pet hates!

12 If freedom is simply being able to do what you want, are animals freer than humans?
Maybe ... but there again, do they realise they have freedom in that way?

13 Would you rather be reincarnated as a fly or just cease to exist after you die?
As I don't believe in reincarnation ... sorry. And, you don't just cease to exist .. so a no-go question for me!

14 Is social media a force for good or evil?
Evil
As I said earlier too many people spend their lives on their phones and miss out on actual life.

I received that from my cousin yesterday - and did think it was too good not to share.

Today I have been waiting around for a delivery (due this morning), however I have kept us both busy, as you can see! I have a small hedge on one side of my from garden, and it needed squaring up a bit ... my assistant was too busy enjoying watching the world go by, though, to be of much help ....

I'm all behind - so here goes the catch-up ...

8 Do you have a favourite towel?
A dry one!

9 Would you rather lose the ability to read or lose the ability to speak?
That is one of the harder questions, isn't it? I do love reading, both fiction, and fact ... and love being able to talk. However, as I suppose I could be silent as I am single( Jifyyy would probably be happy ... as for my brothers, that is certainly theway they would vote.
So let's keep reading, please

10 What is your opinion of aubergines?
I am not a fan of any of that "family" ... to me they always appear tastless, whatever you do to them

Enjoying A Day Out

debris4spike: (Library)
On Monday I had the day off work to go on a coach trip with Christine. We went to Lacock Abbey and the village. Haven't sorted the Abbey photos yet but here are a few from the village. It is an amazing unspoilt village - used for filming of loads of period dramas.

ExpandLooking for Mr Darcy )

And, I have realised that as I have been off for the day, and then working I have missed a couple of days - so here is a catch up ...

4 Does a person’s name influence the person they become?
I went to college with someone called Orlando, and we all said that it suited him!

5 What's the best cake?
Lemon drizzle ... although Mum used to make a stunning Victoria sandwich, which she served with white icing, which used to be my #1

6 If you had a boat what would you name it?
"Happy Days"

7 Would you rather have unlimited sushi for life or unlimited tacos for life?
I am not fond of tacos, however I don't eat cooked fish (as I don't like the texture), and have never tried raw ... so looks like tacos win
debris4spike: (Deborah - Saves the Day)
2 What are the sexiest names and the least sexy names for a woman?
Easy ... Deborah! Whether that is for most or least I don't know!
Actually my go-to name if I am making a general statement is always the same, and probably one of the least sexy names I know ... Agatha!

3 What is the funniest real name you have ever heard?
When I worked as an osteopath I met a father, son, and grandson who all had the same first name which was weird ... Diggory.
Apparently it had been a Christian name of the eldest son dating back to the seventeenth century.

Wow - August Already

Thursday, August 1st, 2019 08:42 pm
debris4spike: (James - his name)
Well first I can just wonder if any of you remember the TV series The Waltons ... well I made 50 icons and they are here. It was fun to re-visit the show ... a great favourite of Mum & Dad, as well ... So, a double reason for enjoying this set.

And, thank you [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee for listing the next month's questions.

1 What are the sexiest names and the least sexy names for a man?
I think that I like/ don't like names by people I have met So some people are "lovely" and so the name goes up in my thoughts.  (Shall I mention James as a name!!)

however some of the old fashioned names tend not to be sexy ... although one name that I could think, Horace, is fun as I have a teddy bear with that name!

So, not a proper answer I am afraid to say.

ExpandThe rest of the month is here )
debris4spike: (Gone with the Wind - Tomorrow is another)
As I have missed a couple of days I thought I would get caught up, and do tomorrow's at the same time!

28 Do you like hard-boiled eggs?
Yes if made into an egg sandwich, or with some salad cream and a nice salad ... but by itself, not particularly.

29 Would you rather live in a tree-house or a bouncy castle?
Depends on the size!

30 Would you prefer to be furry like a bear or scaly like a fish?
Furry means you get more cuddles!

31 Who is your favourite Mike?
Umm .... trying to think.
I have a cousin called Mike, but I don't really know him. I worked with a Mike for a time but he tended to keep himself to himself ... so all in all, don't really have an answer

A Super Day Out

Saturday, July 27th, 2019 02:54 pm
debris4spike: (James - Discovery Channel)
Yesterday Christine and I went on a day trip ... Berry Pomeroy Castle, a Tudor mansion within the walls of an earlier castle, is near the village of Berry Pomeroy, in South Devon, England. It was built in the late 15th century by the Pomeroy family which had held the land since the 11th century. By 1547 the family was in financial difficulties and sold the lands to Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. Apart from a short period of forfeit to the Crown after Edward's execution, the castle has remained in the Seymour family ever since, although it was abandoned in the late 17th century when the fourth baronet moved to Wiltshire (Thanks Wikepedia)

We had a self-guided audio guide, and spent a n amazing hour and a half walking around the extensive ruins, re-hearing of the history of the Seymour family, Henry VIII, Edward VI, etc as well as learning about a couple of ghosts

ExpandWouldn't it have been lovely to have seen it when it was lived in )>

However what with work, and a day out I am behind again (as I am with my replying!) ...

25 Would you rather be a scarecrow or a scared crow?
A scarecrow ... that way I am being "paid" to be nosy! Anyway, I am not great at flying!

26 What's the most un-breakfasty food you've ever had for breakfast?
Chips!
When I was in my mid 20's we broke down coming back from Spain so ennded up being 3 days for our ferry.  Our insurance got us on the next one (a 7.30am crossing), and they were still serving chips (at request), so Mum & I had some!

27 If you had to have a tail, would you prefer one like a rabbit, a monkey or a donkey?
Monkey - I am always running up & down staires more than once as I had too much to carry ... this way I could buy a basket, and fill it, thus saving myself the extra trip

oh well - hope your weekend is going well.  I have had a busy morning doing cleaning, and washing ... now I am going to have a bit of me-time ... although it will probably mean I will end up writing some more of my holiday journal.
debris4spike: (Longest Day helmet on beach)
24 What's the weirdest thing that you have ever seen at the seaside?

I have seen some very scary sights ... people who are in skimpy swimming costumes, who maybe should have left their normal clothing on!!

As to weird ... I can't think of anything at all. However the sculpture that I posted back in May I find weird. It is to commemorate The Normandy Beach landings of June 1944, but sadly I don't "get" modern art ... here it is if you missed the last time I posted it (and the explanation with it)

 photo Omaha Beach 2_zps4pts5pft.jpg

Comment of the sculpteur:
I created this sculpture to honour the courage of these men:
Sons, husbands and fathers, who endangered and often sacrificed their lives in the hope of freeing the French people.

Les Braves consists of three elements:
The wings of Hope
So that the spirit which carried these men on June 6th, 1944 continues to inspire us, reminding us that together it is always possible to changing the future.
Rise, Freedom!
So that the example of those who rose against barbarity, helps us remain standing strong against all forms of inhumanity.
The Wings of Fraternity
So that this surge of brotherhood always reminds us of our responsibility towards others as well as ourselves.
On June 6th, 1944 these man were more than soldiers, they were our brothers.

I love the reasoning behind it ... I just don't get the actual image

I Spoke Too Soon!

debris4spike: (Colourblind)
LOL - yes, I said I was keeping up, and then it all fell apart! So here goes for 3 days =

21 Would you rather not be able to see any colors or have mild but constant tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?

Easy for me - as I already said I have lost some of the sight in one of my eyes, and as most of you know I am colourblind ... so, for me, it is seeing in B&W is the obvious choice.

22 What is your most interesting quirk?

I tend to have a warped sense of humour ... and can see the positive in the weirdest way. I have been told it can be infuriating ... I prefer to think of it as quirky!

23 A genie gives you one wish, no infinity wishes allowed, what do you ask for?

Oh wow, that is a tough question ...
I think that I would say that on the day in the future, when it is Jiffy's time to cross "Rainbow Bridge", that he would slip away in his sleep. He would not have to suffer at all.

Well its been a busy day at work, so I suppose I must get a cuppa before I cook dinner. Hope you are all well x

I Am Getting Old

debris4spike: (Vampire Diaries - Damon crying)
20 What did you use to spend your pocket money on?

I must be getting old, as I can't remember.

I know I put it towards presents for the family. However we didn't get much, so what it went on other than that would not be very much at all.
debris4spike: (Child)
19 Do you have a favourite plate?

Not one I use now, as I scared to break it.

When I went on holiday at age 18 to family friends, they had an odd tea-plate there which I loved, as it perfectly matched the bowl that I was given as a 1 year old, and still had. The Bunnykins pattern .

Anyway, as a joke I was given it every day ... and was sad to leave it behind. However when I got home and unpacked my case, there it was ... thank you Auntie Iris

I found a picture on Google-search, of the exact one.  My Bunnymug doesn't match though!

debris4spike: (DJ - plaited!)
18 Have you ever named a pet after a real person?

I haven't, but the pony in the icon is called DJ - and he is named after me. I was horse sitting for her, when he was born - a totally unexpected foal

Two In One

debris4spike: (Brain)
I was tired after a day secretarial yesterday, so hardly turned on the pc at all ... and certainly not LJ. I have been really struggling with tiredness over the last few days/couple of weeks. Frustrating, but so far haven't had to take any more time off work. So I am doing 2 days in one again ... however, as it turns out, I am going to answer them together.

16 What one legal thing would you make illegal?
17 What one illegal thing would you make legal?

I may moan about laws, one way or the other, but most od them make sense .... so can't really think of any that I would add, or delete.

Boring, but true

####

On other news my aunt (Dad's 92 yr old sister) is having a brain MRI today. What annoys me is that whenever I speak to her she spends every moment moaning ... and moaning especially that she has not spoken to a doctor for ages (well, how did she get the apt?), and that the health system don't care about the elderly (if they didn't then they wouldn't have sent her for such an expensive test!)

However, Auntie Joyce has moaned all her life (Dad was older), so I suppose I am to expect her to be like this. At least Mum & Dad are spared her moans now!!
debris4spike: (Sunshine after rain)
Today is St Swithun's Day, and it's been nice weather.  For those who don't know, here is the whole back story ...

St Swithun’s Day (or ‘Swithin’ as he is also known) is the feast day of a ninth century Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Winchester who died in 862 AD. Swithun was born in the Kingdom of Wessex (an Anglo-Saxon Kingdom in the South-West and the precursor to the unified Kingdom of England) and educated in Winchester, the Kingdom’s capital.

Little is definitively known about Swithun’s life although he is said to have been the spiritual adviser of Æthelwulf, King of Wessex, who donated much of his royal land to Swithun to build and restore numerous churches.

With his dying breath Swithun is said to have requested that his final resting place be outside, where his grave could easily be reached by both members of the parish and the rainfall from the heavens. Swithun’s wishes were met for over 100 years.   Swithun’s body was removed from its simple grave and interred in the new Cathedral on 15 July 971. A shrine to the Saint remains in the modern Winchester Cathedral to this day.  According to legend, forty days of terrible weather followed, suggesting St Swithun was none too happy with the new arrangements! Ever since, it has been said that the weather on 15 July supposedly determines the weather for the next forty days, as noted in the popular Elizabethan verse:

“St Swithin’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St Swithin’s day if thou be fair
For forty days will rain na mair”

(Thank you Historic UK for the details)

So, it has been sunny here - we will see what the next 40 days brings!

And, as it's the 15th -

15 Do you remember a place that was once all fields and is no longer?
When I moved to Bude in 1986 it was a smallish town, surrounded by fields ... sadly, now, you can't tell where Bude stops and Stratton, or Poughill, start

3/4

debris4spike: (James - eyes)
A couple of days ago I had my annual eye-test.  I go to Boots, which means I see a different optician every time.  I saw a very nice lady this time, but as she sat down I knew she had bad news.  However, as it turned out, it wasn't as bad as she had thought!

One of the tests I had done was the individual eye field of vision, and that is what she wanted to start with ... She needed to tell me I had tested as 50% vision in my right eye.  However it was my turn to reassure her!  I had surgery in that eye back in 1989, and for a few hours I had been totally blind ... then I told her to look at the photo of the rtina.  She was then suprised I could see anything at all!

So, as I pointed out, I have 3/4 vision, but am not really aware of the fact as my left eye compensates most of the time.  On even more good news, no need to change the glasses prescription (so no big bill), and the loss of vision is only marginal compared to last year.

So all in al a positive trip.

And continuing to be positve - lets keep up ....

14 If being permanently stapled to a cello would somehow bring about world peace would you be prepared to be permanently stapled to a cello? It would hurt a little bit and you would never quite be able to escape the pain but there would be world peace and you could learn to play the cello.

i am a clarinetist.  I am a saxophonist.  I don't like stringed instruments ... however at least it's a cello and not a violin.  So, for world peace, ummmmmmm, maybe!!
debris4spike: (Procrastinate - daleks.)
9 How obsessive are you about your bins?
We have a 2 bin system, so it's easy to use ... so I like to recycle as much as I can

10 Have you ever been up on the roof?
No - I am not good with heights.
However, I have been on the roof of the tower of Exeter Cathedral (but it has a wall around, so I could cope)

11 What's the largest vehicle you have ever driven?
My licence lets me drive a 7 1/2 ton truck. Dad and I hired one some years ago to collect a load of stuff when his mum was having work done. So, an all-day drive, each way, and we did a 50:50 split

12 Have you ever met your doppelganger?
I pity whoever is "me" ... so would be too scared to meet them!

13 What is the best certificate that you have ever been awarded?
My degree was pretty special
However I also just received a certificate for my 100 length swim for Guide Dogs for the Blind ... that was a special swim, so glad I have the certificate as well.
