Yes, she is now 11 years cancer free. Her mastectomy was literally happening now, and as all the surrounding tissue was clear, she got the all-clear after the op.

I suppose I can be incredibly positive and say that, as far as I know, I have also been cancer free in that time!

So, lots to be thankful for.

I think we need to be reminded of that from time to time. Sometimes, when the days are cold and dark, and there are assorted tensions around, I forget to be thankful.

I did take the A to Z photo, but as it wasn't good quality I need to re-take it. I shall probably wait now till next Monday and post the 2 weeks on the same day. But I promise I will take the same image, so I am fulfilling the meme (honest!).

Just had my blood test, so hopefully that will also give good news. My asthma is still not great, but I think the rest of me is OK now. Still, let's see what the bloods show. I walked home a slightly longer way, so not a very long walk, but at least something.

Right - my kitchen floor needs a clean ... icons need to be made ... what a difficult choice to make!!!!!!!!!! (I bet you can guess which one gets my vote!). Until then -

12. Have you ever crossed the equator?

The furthest south I have been is Abu Simbel Temples, which I have checked, and it's 22.3372° N
So, no ... not yet!

WWI - Visit 5

Our middle day of the trip was coming to an end, and on our way back we drove past Henencourt Chateau, where British officers were billeted.  The men were in the village, but from the coach it was impossible to get a photo!
Henencourt Chateau - where British officers were billetted (2)

On our way back to our hotel we made a final stop at Thiepval Memorial ... the memorial to the missing of the Somme. Granddad was there, but sadly we weren't there long enough for me to find his regimental memorial, as he would have known some of those names, I am sure.

And so we are on the last day of the trip, and our first stop was Bailleul Cemetery, which is near where one of the RFC airfields were. One grave we went specifically to see was that of Thomas Mottershead received the only V.C. ever awarded to a non-commissioned RFC officer during the First World War

As there was also a hospital there, many of the graves are doubles and as you can see it was started as part of the local Churchyard.

Our final stop of the morning was at Godewaersvelde Cemetery.... or, as the soldiers called the town "God Wears Velvet".

We went there to see one of the nursing sisters who was killed in a bombing of the hospital areas. And, ironically, we ended up having to call the Belgian health services, as the lady collapsed again. They were very speedy.

Just walked down to collect my prescription and dropped into the doctors to check my recent annual blood test ... to be told "normal". And, when I got back from work today I had a letter with my mammogram results ... "normal".

So, hearing that twice must truly confirm that I am normal.

Personally I don't agree!!!

Work went well today ... was fascinated watching a pirate arrive at the main entrance, complete with a pair of cutlasses! He was on his way to spend some time in the children's ward. We do occasionally get visitors like that, but usually more over the Christmas period. The local football & rugby teams also visit, etc, etc.

Now I am hoping to get a couple of icons made before ringing Auntie Mary ... got distracted yesterday, so really need to get that done today!

As ever -

31. Do you have a lawn on your property? Who mows it?
I miss having lawn. Until Mum & Dad died I had been the one to mow their lawn, over the last 30+ years.

Let's get this posted x
debris4spike: (Default)
Although I have icons to finish, and photos to edit before posting, so it will be a fun day on the computer ... well, until I have to go into work and then the computer will be work-based.

It does seem weird today that we are in August, yet I am wearing a jumper as I sit here. I know we all say we remember hot summers as a kid, and yes I do, but I also remember some very cold wet days staying in a caravan, so maybe those are the summers we are having again. I just hope those cold summers don't last too long before we get the sunshine again. The weather people said we had one of the wettest/coldest Julys on record ... seems odd when Death Valley was expecting to have the hottest days ever.

Oh well, the good news is that I don't have to water all the tubs in the garden, so that makes life easier ... so I shall focus on that positive.

Treatment yesterday went well, although my leg is very sore. The good news is that although, overall, I have had more pain in the last couple of weeks when my masseur checked the strength is returning to the leg. So, again, I can focus on the positive rather than the pain.

So, having thought of 2 positives, I ought to complete the list of "5" -

  • Not watering the garden

  • Strength in leg retuning

  • Work to go to - and health to get there

  • Food on the table, roof over my head

  • Family & friends

Tonight I will get home in time to watch the final of Legomasters New Zealand, so that will be a fun hour's watch.  Until then, let me finish with the question(s), as I am working all day tomorrow -

3 – Clean Your Floors Day: How often do you clean your floors? Do you have to deal with different types of flooring (carpeting in some rooms, hardwood, tiles, linoleum in others)? Do you use a regular vacuum cleaner or a robovac, or both? Have you ever gotten down on your hands and knees and actually scrubbed a floor – the whole floor, not just one stubborn stain?
Carpet in all the hose, except lino in bathroom and conservatory & quarry tiles in kitchen.
Mum was a great believer in cleaning the kitchen on hands & knees, so yes I have done that.  Now I use mops ... with a hoover for the rest

4 – Chocolate Chip Cookie Day: Are you a fan of chocolate chip cookies? Are you a chocolate chip cookie traditionalist, or do you like variations -- with nuts, or different types of chocolate, etc.? Do you have a favourite brand, or do you buy them from a bakery? Do you make your own? Will you share your favourite recipe?
I don't make them - and just like the real basic cheepo ones from the supermarket.

Right I shall get on.

Yes, true

It is part of the follow-up from the tumble I took. I had to check on my BP a couple of times twice a day for at least a week. My GP then worked out the average ... and it was perfect! Yes, the figure that doctors use as the perfect average, and there is my result. So good news. And, while there, she exempted me from my next Asthma review ... so a good afternoon.

I needed that ... especially after the clinic I had this morning. Most clinics we have an "odd-ball" patient ... well after all but one of the patients I should be exempt for a week or two.

I am going to get some housework done, I hope, as I have Toni & her dog crashing here on Friday while Pete has surgery. I am working over the next couple of days so will be good to try and get a bit ahead.

I am going to post the photos of my trip with Brenda as soon as I can ... but before I post this -

27– World Theatre Day: what was the last thing you saw performed in a theatre?

I think it was "Fiddler on the Roof" back in 1984

28 – Salt Awareness Week (UK): The recommended intake for salt is 6g per day, pick a meal today and share how much salt there is in it.
I do like salt with food ... hopefully try not to have too much, but can't eat veggies without it (and now I know the BP is OK I am not going to worry)

Right, let's get on.

Will try & catch up in a minute x

I don' t usually do this, but have copied one of the entries from my staff news page yesterday when I was at work.  Apparently they are doing this campaign although I don't know if that's just my hospital, the NHS in general ... or even if it's one of those "days" that everyone seems to come up with.

It does seem, in theory, a great idea.  I think it would work with friends, but I honestly don't know if I would be onest with the average member of staff I work with ... anyway, it's a good thought, that I will try to do when speaking to friends especially ...

This Time to Talk Day (Thursday 3 Feb 2022) and throughout the month of February we are challenging staff to get involved in our AskTwice campaign.

We want you to PAUSE and ask a colleague “How are you?”

They will probably reply “I’m fine!”

Now, ask again….

“How are you really?

And take the time to listen.

We know that yourselves and your colleagues are under a lot of pressure right now, and there’s evidence that getting support from peers or other people with similar challenges can improve staff wellbeing.

For example, it could:

  • help them to open up about what they are feeling and experiencing

  • reassure them that they’re not alone in how they are feeling

  • help them to connect with others and give them a sense of belonging

  • encourage them to value their strengths

  • build their self-esteem and confidence

  • help them to feel more hopeful about the future.

  • So, we are asking each staff member to take a few minutes to check-in with a colleague this month to see how they are coping. And don’t forget to ask twice!

Remember you don’t have to have all the answers, just listening is enough.

You can remind your colleagues that there is lots of further staff health and wellbeing support available

So, as I have a day off I shall post again later as I have just had a walk, and will have a couple of photos to post when I am organised!

Well I didn't make it here yesterday as I was being "sorted out"!!

Work went well, from my point of view.  However the physiologist I was working with found it a tough clinic.  Our first patient was an 18year old who was just starting transition to a female (so a complicated history), our next patient had been having bladder problems (and surgery) for 40+ years ... and so it went on!  They were nice people, so for me it was fine, but the medical side was tough.

Today was the opposite - 5 patients with very straight-forward medical stories ... but they were all incredibly odd!

Anyway, yesterday I heard from my doctor that he wanted me to speak to the asthma specialist in the practice.  We had a really good chat, and she has suggested further treatment, so I shall wait and see how that goes.  Hopefully it will improve my breathing.  From that phone appointment I had to drive back to Torquay to get my tooth problem sorted out.  That seems OK, now (but again it's a case of wait & see)

So now I have shopping to do soon (and collect my new prescription), so am heading off again soon -

24. Do you still have your wisdom teeth?
I have had 1 removed (a cople of years ago), 1 still in my jaw-line ... and the other 2 are still to come through.

25. Did you have a swing set in your yard when you were a child?
Yes - it was a suprise birthday pressie when I was 4, and when we moved house Dad dismantled it and it moved with us.

Yes, more PhotoFriday images!  I only walked round the short block this morning, but spotted some lovely colour, so am sharing them with you here.  It was a walk that Jiffy and I did at least every other day, so nice to re-trace those steps, but with another purpose.

Also, a short walk, a I am walking into the city later as I have a bra fitting.  That's the disadvantage of being "well endowered" ...you can't just pick up a cheepo bra, and the fitting changes from time to time.

i have also spoken to my GP (again) this morning.  He put me on a new treatment for my asthma as it was not great when I last saw him.  However this is the fourth time I have tried assorted long term treatments and it failed.  However I was a good girl and went on the new medication.  But, 2 weeks in and I am really struggling, so I needed to check with him before I stopped the inhaler.  So hopefully that is the answer for the worsening symptoms ... if not ... "panic"  Anyway, that was also the reason that I didn't catch up with you all yesterday as I am super-tired again.  So, let's "watch this space"!!

Anyway - here's some local colour.  Although the first is of a pot plant that I have had for years & years and this is the first time that it has flowered -

I was tired after a day secretarial yesterday, so hardly turned on the pc at all ... and certainly not LJ. I have been really struggling with tiredness over the last few days/couple of weeks. Frustrating, but so far haven't had to take any more time off work. So I am doing 2 days in one again ... however, as it turns out, I am going to answer them together.

17 What one illegal thing would you make legal?

I may moan about laws, one way or the other, but most od them make sense .... so can't really think of any that I would add, or delete.

Boring, but true

On other news my aunt (Dad's 92 yr old sister) is having a brain MRI today. What annoys me is that whenever I speak to her she spends every moment moaning ... and moaning especially that she has not spoken to a doctor for ages (well, how did she get the apt?), and that the health system don't care about the elderly (if they didn't then they wouldn't have sent her for such an expensive test!)

However, Auntie Joyce has moaned all her life (Dad was older), so I suppose I am to expect her to be like this. At least Mum & Dad are spared her moans now!!

In England we are so lucky to have the NHS.

I work for the NHS - and love it.

However people are always complaining about it - especially the waiting lists.

Well, a colleague of mine's husband found out last month he needed a heart proceedure.  He was told it could be a year before he got his appointment, but as they said they could take a cancellation they were lucky and Freddie had his proceedure yesterday ... Yay (and all went well).

HOWEVER, when they got there just before 8 am they were the only ones there ... there were 5 slots.  About 20 mins late one of the others turned up, but the others never did.

So all these people who complain should see this, and the fact that 75% of the clinics I work in have at least one non-attending.  Routinely they are offered another appointment, and thus more money, more delay in waiting lists .

I don't often get political, but was just so annoyed about these other 3 missing people.

What do you hope your future will be like?

I hope to have the time, health (and money) to be able to continue the part-time work, and to be able to travel and sight-see.

(I also hope to, in the near future, to catch up with all my comments.  I picked up a tummy bug that has come and gone ... so been really annoying!!)

About time I hear you say !!!

Hope all is well with you and I haven't missed too much.  I seem to go from one day to another, and never get time to spend relaxed in front of my computer.  This is being done on my tablet while Mum and Dad have a snooze.  Good excuse to not do housework as I have to keep quiet 😉

So let's get up to date .....

1 - I am actually feeling a lot better .... my energy levels are up and the pain level down.  My osteopath has said that he is also pleased with progress, but still has a long way to go.  Anyway I am feeling positive, and for the first time in ages I am actually going to restart playing my clarinet.

2 - Dad is doing OK ... he still gets times when he loses himself and his vocabulary is not great.  However he is keeping busy doing gardening every day .... even when I am not around to nag!  He goes to Church with me every Sunday and takes Jiffy for a walk every day.  So all in all for a 90 year old Alzheimer's sufferer he is doing well.

3 - Mum has good days and  bad days ... for the first time yesterday she did about quarter of an hour sweeping where I was digging ... she was wiped out by the end, but it was good to see her wanting to do something.

4 - I am now on Instagram .... so if anyone else is then find me there .... Debris4spike.  My nephews nagged me, and although my phone camera is not great it is still fun.

5 - Jiffy keeps well.  The mornings I am here (4) we go for a walk ... so that's nice for us both.

6 - Now I am in a routine with cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc, life is easier.  I feel more in control of my own life again.

Well I have to get on .... certainly busy as ever, but at least now I am feeling a bit stronger life is a bit easier.

Will try to keep up better.  But I know I am a bad girl, so make no promises 😄

What a day so far - had my final Hepatitis "stab" ... so only confirmation blood tests to go.  So, thanks to work 2 MMRs and 3 Heps ... lots more to me now!

Many thanks to the most thoughtful of friends ... I am now protected from adverse programming waves that flow around the Cosmos, due to my flashy new Tin Helmet ... [livejournal.com profile] jaded_jamie  you are the best ... now I just wait for The Doctor to fully protect the world, but until then I have a new fashion accessory!  (Don't know what the hospital will make of it!)

Well, tea is drunk, thanks are said ... I'm off to vote ... a priviledge that we in Britain should never ignore ... don't know if I have Local Elections or just the Vote system ... but either/or I wanted to do it ... hence the reason I'm here today.

Q: Doctor,  I've heard that  cardiovascular exercise can prolong life.  Is this true?

A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it....don't waste on exercise.  Everything wear out eventually.  Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster.  Want to live longer?  Take nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiency.  What does cow eat?   Hay and corn.    And what are these?   Vegetables.  So steak is nothing more than efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system.  Need grain?  Eat chicken.  Beef also good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable).  And pork chop can give you 100% of recommended daily allowance of vegetable product.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A:  No, not at all.  Wine made from fruit.  Brandy is distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way.  Beer also made of grain.  Bottoms up!

Q: How  can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one..  If you have two bodies, your ratio two to one, etc.

Q: What  are some of  the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of single one, sorry.  My philosophy is: No pain...good!

Q:  Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A:  YOU NOT LISTENING!  Food are fried these day in vegetable oil.  In fact, they permeated by it.  How could getting more vegetable be bad for you?!?

Q
:   Will  sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not!  When you exercise muscle, it get bigger.  You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.

Q:  Is chocolate bad for me?

A:  Are you crazy?!?  HEL-LO-O!!  Cocoa bean!  Another vegetable!  It best feel-good food around!

Q:  Is swimming good for your figure?

A:  If swimming good for your figure, explain whale to me..

Q:  Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?

A:  Hey!  'Round' a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets..

And  remember:
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up,  totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a  ride!!"

AND......

For  those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health.  It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional  studies.
