Yes, she is now 11 years cancer free. Her mastectomy was literally happening now, and as all the surrounding tissue was clear, she got the all-clear after the op.

I suppose I can be incredibly positive and say that, as far as I know, I have also been cancer free in that time!

So, lots to be thankful for.

I think we need to be reminded of that from time to time. Sometimes, when the days are cold and dark, and there are assorted tensions around, I forget to be thankful.

I did take the A to Z photo, but as it wasn't good quality I need to re-take it. I shall probably wait now till next Monday and post the 2 weeks on the same day. But I promise I will take the same image, so I am fulfilling the meme (honest!).

Just had my blood test, so hopefully that will also give good news. My asthma is still not great, but I think the rest of me is OK now. Still, let's see what the bloods show. I walked home a slightly longer way, so not a very long walk, but at least something.

Right - my kitchen floor needs a clean ... icons need to be made ... what a difficult choice to make!!!!!!!!!! (I bet you can guess which one gets my vote!). Until then -

12. Have you ever crossed the equator?

The furthest south I have been is Abu Simbel Temples, which I have checked, and it's 22.3372° N
So, no ... not yet!

Just Busy, Waiting

I have heard from Toni, and yes Pete is having surgery as I type this. She has decided to stay near-by in case there is a problem (although she hasn't admitted that). So she will be down at some point ... however I have been busy, promise.

Washing on line, some biscuits made, and I have even cleaned my front window (as next week I will add some bunting up to celebrate King Charles' Coronation.

So I am going to see if any of you have some exciting news, then make some icons as I am making some for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy in a couple of weeks.

But, as ever, before I do that ....

28 – Global Pay It Forward Day: Paying it forward is what happens when something wonderful happens to you on the part of a stranger, and all they ask for in return is for you to pay it forward, to do something for someone when they need it in the future. Has that ever happened to you?
It's never, so far, happened to me

Right, let me catch up

Hi ...

But only just!

I am probably having Toni crash here tomorrow as Pete is due for surgery tomorrow.  His chemo is hopefully finished, and the cancer was also found in part of his thyroid, which is what the op is for.   It has been delayed once, so hopefully will go ahead this time.  So I need to clean the house - I know it doesn't worry her, as we have both spent lots of times in each others houses ... but it is giving me the excuse I needed to do more than more normal hurry through.  The other "panic" I had was that it is Pete's birthday in a couple of weeks, and I hadn't got his pressie organised, so I have shot out to the shops as by buying and wrapping it, if they are around this week it will save me postage.

So as I soon need to get to work I will dissappear again .. and ...

27 – Morse Code Day: spell out your username in morse code
-.. . -... .-. .. ... ....- ... .--. .. -.- .
(Will admit I had to cheat)

Right, let's get on ... will try and catch up tomorrow.

I have been in & out to work ... some good shifts, and overall less hours, which is better for my body and brain, if not the bank balance!

However I have still manage to injure one of my hamstrings.  It's on the same leg as the injuy to the ankle (and I did injure the knee badly 20 years ago).  But, the good news is that I may be 61 but have very little arthritis in either joint.  So I have had treatment today and now have a sore leg ... and exercises to do to repair the injury overall.

On Wednesday I had (Christmas) lunch with Toni & Pete.  I managed to speak to Toni by herself briefly ... Pete's cancer is doing OK, and he is off treatment for the moment, but his heart took a bit of a pounding.  That's a worrying thing as he is 75, and did have a heart attack 20 years ago ... so good news, but not great.  he is seeing the consultaant again in a week or two, so we shall see how he is doing then.

Anyway, as the post said, I am enjoying the icon challenges over on DW (mostly).  These first 2 are for Itsabattlefield ....

Thses 4 are made from round 54 of perioddrama_ic over on DW, with the theme of "Favourite Things" ....I do love these 2 TV series ... Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman and Downton Abbey

As ever, they can be snagged.

Now, I must get caught up -

10 – Shop for Travel Day: First celebrated in 2018, Shop for Travel Day has continued annually on the second Tuesday of the year ever since. The reason for it being situated at this time on the calendar has to do with the fact that, in many cases, the early weeks of January are an especially advantageous time to shop for travel due to many companies offering special deals and discounts. When was the last time you travelled within your own country? How about outside of your own country? If money (and time) were no object, where would you love to travel to?
Didin't realise there was a good day to book a trip.  However most of my trips are either cheepo ones in England, or ones booked with tour companies.
I travelled to see my Aunt last weekend (but not for leisure) ... the last leisure trip in England was London in November.  Last trip further afield was Turkey in September.
Oh I have a very, very long bucket list!

11 – Take the Stairs Day. Does your house have stairs? If you have the choice of stairs or an elevator, which do you choose?
I have a 3 story house ... with staires.  I always use staires at work, as well.

12 – Marzipan Day: Do you like marzipan?
No

13 – Make Your Dream Come True Day: Have you ever had a dream come true? Care to tell the story?
Minor ones, yes ... I have been to San Francisco ... I have been to Gallipoli

Right, lets get on and sit on a comfy seat so i can rest the leg and let it heal easier!

Catch up tomorrow x

A Positive Friday

I know, I missed yesterday ... I can blame Claire for that.

For the last 6 years she and I have met up, usually for a shopping day, but mainly to celebrate another anniversary of her being Cancer free.  7 years ago she had a total mastectomy, but it turned out that she didn't need any chemo/radio ... so I made a point of saying we will celebrate that day.  Sometimes we talk about the cancer, but sometimes not, I always bring up an open-ended thought and leave it for her to decide.  Yesterday, we didn't.  But it is still a day of celebration, whichever she decides.

Yesterday I had a lazy morning, doing some shopping and a bit more spring-cleaning before wrapping up and walking over to her ... spotting some colours etc for my PhotoFriday challenge, which are here -

While I was spying on coloured plants, I realised someone was watching me ... so I took his photo as well!

One of the disadvantages of living where I do is that I see helicopters coming into land at the hospital, sadly too often ... here was the latest -
DSC_0805

However one of the advantages of living in Exeter is that it's an old city.  Devon's popular houses are called "long houses" and this is one, although like many they are divided into 2 - 3 properties.

I also took this photo of a couple of items that were Mum & Dad's and that Tim has on display in their front garden
DSC_0807

Anyway, when I got there we had a walk and then cam back here for a chat (in the garden again due to lockdown).  I didn't feel too cold then (tea and a liqueur) helped there!  However by the time she left and I came in I realised I had got cold, and even though I wrapped up with more layers it was ages before I was fully thawed out ... so didn't go up to the computer.

However, I wouldn't have not done that afternoon, both the spending time with Claire, and the getting cold for a chance to celebrate her being cancer free.

I have just been to get some extra bits and pieces from the shops, but it is still cold, so plan to spend the rest of the day pottering in the house.  This morning I watched an episode of Sharpe on the TV while doing some more spring-cleaning.

After I have answered the 3 questions I owe you/me then I plan to do some artwork, but not much as it is colder up here, then downstaires to read the paper I bought and attempt the crossword puzzles.

Hope you all are managing to keep safe and well .... and warm!

So -

12. How would a stranger that met you at a dinner party describe you?

So shy ... that they wouldn't be able to say anything else about me!

13. How old do you feel?

Some day 95, other days 25 ... really depends on the day. A lot of the time I'm not really aware of my age at all.

14. How has getting older helped you deal with challenges in life?

I don't think it has. I have always seen something positive, or humorous, in circumstances that challenge.
debris4spike: (Default)
I find it sadly ironical that Captain Sir Tom Moore died of pneumonia and coronvirus. The man (for those who don't know) walked 100 laps of his garden last year and raised over 35 million pounds for the NHS charities. He also, at age 100 had a #1 in the UK charts and last summer he was knighted by the Queen

May he R.I.P. and may his family have those special memories to keep them strong during these difficult days.

Todays clinic was "good" we had 60% no-show ... so as we tend to have to keep in our designated location, I sat and read. So great to get paid to read Spuffy (yes, I had my Kindle with me). So frustrating though when people don't bother turning up ... or even ringing to say that they won't be coming.

In a few minutes, I am going to walk up to Tim & Claire's and then Claire & I are going for a walk, as the weather is actually quite nice (although cold), so it will be good to catch up with her.

But before I go ...

3. How do you feel about plastic surgery?

When Claire had her mastectomy she had an implant, so she has had plastic surgery. Yes, I can totally understand how cancer survivors and burns (etc) victims would want & need plastic surgery.

However when you see some "stars" who are so distorted by surgery I do have to wonder why?

So, yes, brilliant in rehab, otherwise, not so much.

I had yesterday off (and don't work Fridays) so have given my kitchen cabinets a good clean and tidy.  Sadly I had a lot of "very" empty spaces where Jiffy's things had been ... so it was a combination of cleaning and moving things.  However, a you can guess, it all made sense as I was doing them, but whether I shall remember what I decided is another matter!!

I heard from the cemetery yesterday to say that Jiffy's grave marker was in.  However as we are in lockdown, I don't think Boris would count a 45 minute drive to look at my little man's grave as essential driving (Can't think why!!) ... so the team took photos and sent them to me.  However once we are free again that is a trip I shall be doing.  This is the marker provided for him, but I still plan to get a granite stone come the new Year.

processed

Today Claire is having the first of her implant replacement ops.  I haven't worked out why they are having to do 2 ops.  Anyway it is 7 years since her mastectomy & implant, and due to scarring, and her age she needs a new implant, so that was booked for March, but caught lockdown that time.  This time lockdown is still doing hospital appointments, so she has op one today.

Well I am not going to do any more housework today, as still trying to be a good girl ... but I have to go for a walk and collect a prescription on the way back, want to do some artwork for icons, and more of the throw I am crochetting (I am watching the Indiana Jones series while doing that!!)

Hoping you all have a good day x
debris4spike: (Yay!)
What a week .... talk about a roller-coaster.

Having started back at work this week after my holiday to Italy (yes pictures are partly up, and some more to come later) I knew the week would feel weird, especially as I had my annual update training day on Wednesday.  Working for the NHS in a large hospital there are certain things we need to re-learn every year, eg fire safety, hand hygiene, and basic life support ... so that was my Wednesady organised.

However, before I got there, late Tuesday afternoon I had a phone call from my doctor saying my blood test from the previous Friday (to check my thyroxine, etc) was showing an ovarian marker ... I needed scans.  So, Thursday morning I phoned, and was seen an hour later ... but was told I was all clear.

The weird thing is, for that 36 hours I didn't think who I could talk to (other than God), but my main concern overall was not how much I might miss of the future, but of how Jiffy would cope.  However all is OK, totally clear.

Today I had a stress management day at work, as well.  And one thing that they were talking about was learning to be thankful.  I have done these sorts of posts in the past, but thought I would try to do it again for a few weeks ... and hopefully that will also make me post.

The stress course was good in that it showed me how I had managed to develope depression even though I had (and have) no regrets with looking after Mum & Dad.  One thing I did get reminded was that all the bullying I had a teenager has left scars ... and medically scars do fade, but never disappear.  So I realise that I must accept that the hurt of years ago will always shape my life.

Sorry for scribbling, but as I realised today (and this week) I have let a lot continue to drift, and no longer have Mum & Dad to ground me, so scribbling here is a way of letter go of some of the tension of the week.
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Further to Claire's great news of yesterday, I spoke to her today.  She was sounding so happy and positive that it really cheered me up.

She is thinking of speaking to the breast care nurses to offer her services as a help in supporting other breast cancer patients .... which also shows how much she has really changed in the last 9 months.  She is positive about life, and wanting to be there for others who are ill.  She always was pretty upbeat, but like many didn't want to face serious illness ... now she has faced it and come through she wants to show others that it can be done.

Her happiness made me happy.
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Just had a text message from Claire ... she has had her check-up with her consultant, and he is pleased ... she wont need to go back till January, where she will have the first of her annual mammograms on the "other" side.

Feb 12th is a date that's etched in our hearts ... and today he has extended her appts again.  So great news for her ... and yes, I very, very happy.

PS On Yesterday's Post

[livejournal.com profile] strikske  reminded me that I hadn't posted an update on Claire's health.  Her wound is now closed (13 weeks on) ... although still quite scabby.

She picks up her work-laptop this morning, as she is going to start back at 2 mornings this week at home.  I have reminded her to take it easy, but it is so marvellous to know she is now at the next step of her journey.

THANK YOU for all the prayers and positive vibes the 3 "patients" have had ... it is great to write good news.

And finally .... Happy Birthday to my namesake ... 15 today.

debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Last Friday I took Mum for her breast clinic appointment.  She had been told that the pills may take over 6 months to start to have effect.  So, here we were 3 months in.

I "knew" that there would be healing, but presumed it would only just be starting ... however ...

The lump is already smaller and softer.

Healing is happening.

YAY

And, when we got back we found that dad had a letter from the hospital - to say that the cancerous moles on his face had been clearly removed, and he needs further treatment.

YAY

Praise God for healing  - we have a marvellous health system, great doctors, and wonderful treatment.

Mum

As I said I took Mum to the hospital yesterday .... Sadly her news wasn't good ... she has started hormone treatment in the hope of shrinking the tumour.

They have offered her a lumpectomy (so I aimed at the positive by saying that they thought she was well enough for surgery.)

However she will need to be on hormone treatment whichever she decides ... so she has opted to go on the hormone treatment and be re-assessed in three months.  If it has not grown, then that is what she will continue with.  I pray that the lump will decrease in size over the next year.

She actually has the advantage of her age (86) in that the tumour is slow growing.

On a side fact we were told that 1 in 6 ladies will have some form of breast cancer in their lifetime ... that is a scary modern fact.
debris4spike: (Yay!)
I feel that I have been depressing you all with my bad news - and how low life has made me feel ... but today was a special day.

CLAIRE GOT THE ALL-CLEAR .... In fact she was told that the removed breast had even more cancer in than in the scan 2 weeks previously ... so total confirmation that it was the right timing for her.  And, the rest of her lymph nodes are totally clear!  I literally wept when I heard the news ... luckily I was just going on my coffee break when I got the text.

And, Yay #2 ... Dad spent most of the day at the hospital having treatment for his nose bleeds ... so, hopefully that's the end of it, but he is booked to return next week, so they are going to get him sorted.  Thank God for great neighbours, who took him in, and checked he was in the correct area.

So - YAY ... PRAISE GOD.

And, than you all for your support.
*hugs*

Monday Again

Monday, February 24th, 2014 08:15 pm
debris4spike: (Hardest thing - live in the world)
It was a hectic weekend - as ever ... cleaning Mum & Dad's as well as making sure everything was up to date with letters etc.

Sadly the weekend started early as I had to take Mum to a hospital visit ... yes, she also had a breast lump.  She found it some time ago, but presumed it was nothing - then with Claire's news thought she ought to get it checked out.  Sadly they are presuming that it is cancer, as well.  I take her back on Wednesday to get the results of the biopsy.

Dad has had more nose-bleeds, and is still waiting for his hospital appointment (not till the end of next month), so they are hoping to get that brought forward - it is distressing for them both ... and tiring as well.

Claire should have had the biopsy results of her lymph nodes today - but that's delayed till Thursday.

So, all in all, I have decided to emigrate ... I don't think I can cope with anything else!!!

On a brighter note ... YAY!!! ....James Marsters was honored for his versatile career in theater, film and music

Hope life is happier in your world ... I will try to get caught up with comments soon.
debris4spike: (Just Believe - Josph from V)
I know 3 people who are going through their own personal battles with Cancer at present.

One person hears news today - and I pray that he will get good news this time around ... he so, so deserves it.  *hugs* you JJ.

Anne, the lady from Church wasn't given much hope 9 months ago, but her tumours are all shrinking .... so that is brilliant news. YAY

Claire finds out next week if she needs any Chemo ... I pray that she will be clear.
