Blame Tim & Claire!!

When I got in from work yesterday I made a cuppa, came upstaires and switched on my computer and ... the doorbell rang!

It was truly lovely to see them both, as they satyed for a couple of hours, but by then I just decided to have a lazy evening - chatting to a friend via text, and watching some TV ... so, sorry, my plans of being here, were shot down.

I had a lovely Easter Day ... it was a lovely service, and when I got home I actually sat in the sunshine for an hour reading - just so lovely. My great-grandmother always said that whatever the weather around Easter, it would always be sunny on Easter Day. Thank you Grandma Hillson!

I am working again this afternoon ... and want to get some icons made before then. But as it's the first post of the week I need to do my A to Z ... Week 18 – Apr 27 R is for ROOF. And, you get 3 for the price of 1. This is my house .... conservatory, kitchen, bedroom ... 3 roofs.

And ....

21. In Egypt, National Food Day is a day to celebrate the country's diverse cuisine. Do you like falafel?
Ironically, despite touring Egypt for 2 weeks last year, I don't remember seeing falafel. I don't actually remember having any, elsewhere ... but it may have been one of the things I tried when I was in Sicily, as we had a wide range of foods there.
So, the answer is, I don't know!

22. What do you have hanging on the walls of your home?

Pictures, photos, pictures, plates, pictures, clocks, pictures ... and more pictures. I have Vitorian photos of my great grandparents, to a cartoon of 5 giraffes named for myself, Nick & Tim, Brenda & Claire. (And everything in between)
As I look straight ahead of me, I have a cartoon of a lion with the quote "Sometimes I sits & thinks and Sometimes I just sits". Next to that is a painting Mum did of a village in Northamptonshire (near where she was born), and a love spoon that Dad' best man made for their 50th wedding anniversary.
In fact there is very little space left on my walls now.

Right, my artwork is calling me

I will check up on what you are all doing, as well
debris4spike: (Default)
Yes - that's a real problem. Luckily I am not truly ill, but working afternoons & evenings means I am very tired ... so end up sleeping late most mornings.

Thus I have not been able to pop in and catch up with you all.

I worked yesterday, Good Friday ... not really a shift I wanted to do, but there was no one else ... so in the end worked. It went fairly smoothly, overall, and was amazingly un-busy.

Day off today - I went into Exeter this morning in the hope of doing one of the city walks, but I was the only one there, so it didn't go. Instead I popped into the Cathedral for a bit of a stroll ... and then did some shopping before heading back home in time for a late lunch. I will admit I caught the bus on both trips, as it's very cold here, which is not great for the asthma (see I do think ahead some times!!)

Anway, here are a few photos of the inside of the Cathedral - One special thing about this building is that it has the longest continuous medieval stone vault in the world. As there is no central tower, the vault can run all the way from the west wall of the nave to the Great East Window at the far end of the quire, a distance of approximately 96m (315ft).

Well I really need to try and catch up witj comments, and what you have all been up to, as well.

I truly won't be around tomorrow, being a Sunday, so, I do want to wish you a

VERY HAPPY

HALLELUJAH - JESUS IS ALIVE

So, here are the questions to catch back up to date ...

15. Have you a good sense of direction, or do you rely on maps/online navigation? When was the last time you got lost?
I prefer a map if I can ... that way I always feel more positive that I know where I am!

16. Today, in 1850, the French artist Madame Tussaud died. She is known for her wax sculptures of famous figures and for founding Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in London. Have you ever visited the London Wax Museum or any other wax museum worldwide? What did you think of the likenesses of the models?
I have been to London Madam Tussauds a couple of times.
However what I do like is when I am in a museum showng a period of history, the last one was a couple of years ago in The Netherlands where they had some amazing scenes of life during the German occupation of WWII, and of the invasion by the Allies. It really brings history alive.

17. It’s International Bat Appreciation Day – are there bats where you live? Have you ever seen one flying?
The Catacombs in Exeter are meant to have bats, but didn't see any when we visited.
I don't think I have ever seen one.

18. It’s International Jugglers Day! Have you ever tried to juggle?
No

19. It’s National Garlic Day – are you a fan?
Not all that much - OK if it's just a small amount added, but not something like garlic bread

20. Do you have a doorbell, a door knocker, or some other device that alerts you to people at the entrance to your home?
Doorbell

Wishing you all a very special Easter

... Yesterday I had a totally lazy day and feel more relaxed.

For those who don't know, the bone that I am waiting to have re-xrayed is quite small,  ut the one bone in the body that doesn't always heal.  When I was training to be an osteopath it was drummed into us that if we ever suspected this fracture we were to send the patient straight to hospital.  When I was in A&E on Sunday I found that 1 in 500 (or sometimes more) will need surgery.

So, all in all, it was a shock when I fell ... but with alazy day am feeling more relaxed.

The good news is that as I am in a splint I was able to remove it for a shower this morning.  My hand is pretty coloured, but I am able to move my thumb a bit, so hopefully it will heal without surgery needed.

So, as I said, more positive.

The other good side is that although it's my right hand, when I worked as an osteopath, I worked mostly left handed, so things are going to e OK for most things.  (I will really test that in a moment as I am going to try and make a couple more icons, using my mouse left-handed ... so will report back tomorrow!!)

But, let's catch up with the questions I am missing -

30. Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights, for one hour from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., usually on the last Saturday of March. Will you be joining in?
Well as I usually only have the one light on, in whatever room I am in, it will be odd to sit in the dark for an hour

31. World Backup Day - have you ever forgotten to back something up and lost it all? Do you back up your data regularly?
My computer has a cloud-backup that is automatic.

1. Debbie Reynolds was born on this day in 1932 - have you ever seen any of her movies or TV shows? Do you have a favourite?
I do like her films. I suppose "Singing in the Rain" is a classic of hers that I do like

2. National Ferret Day - ferrets are often kept as pets, do you know anyone who has one? Would you keep a ferret?
No, and no!!

And, I can even catch up with the photos -

Saturday ... I was able to get a lot of my back garden tidied and sorted
30th March

Sunday - after my fall, we still all went on the walk ... this is Nick & Brenda's dog, Ollie
31st March

Monday ... well, maybe I shouldn't feel sorry for myself, as these were my collection ready to eat
1st April

Right, I will try & catch up with you all, and past messages.
debris4spike: (Default)
Let me start with reminding you all that today is Good Friday ... the day we remember as the day Jesus was crucified.

12300c6f-dd1e-4a95-8a55-135a60a55d48

Yesterday afternoon was wet, WET, wet ... and cold & windy (not far away from me it actually snowed!). Anyway I cheated and caught a bus to meet up with Claire, and had a great "afternoon tea". We then walked to meet up with Tim, and had a lovely meal, before walking home in the dry.

I hadn't long got back when I had a text from Christine to say there was a Peter Ustinov version of "Death on the Nile" ... so, yes, I watched it. Really had some great scenes of Karnac Temple (which I haven't shared with you yet), but will admit my trip on the Nile was slightly calmer!

But, sadly, no photo ... so sorry about that.

This morning I walked to collect a parcel, and managed to travel between showers, so that was good ... and even nicer I spotted these -
29th March

After lunch I am going into work.

And, as ever, thanks [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee for the questions ... here's todays -

29. Pita bread is celebrated today - what is your favourite dish to serve with pita bread?
I actually enjoy it toasted with marmite ... and cheese & tomatoes

Right, let's see if I can get some more photos done x
debris4spike: (Default)
Today is National James Day ... what a great day to celebrate. There "may" be an actor with that name who I could celebrate ... or I could just say that it was Dad's 2nd name.

So many of the days seem very random ... I mean, look at some of the questions on the year meme, but thinking about James is, I think, a brilliant idea!

I do hope that you all had a great Easter.

I managed to get the garden sorted, and enjoyed Lily's first birthday, as I have already posted,

Easter Day was spent at Nick & Brenda's, and all the family in England who were in England were there and all went to Church together before a great Sunday lunch ... and while we were eating Dan & Meg phoned. They have just travelled to the Philippians, from Australia, so it was good to all be "together" despite the mileage.

Yesterday I met up with Tim & Claire and Brenda in the city of Wells, which is lovely and we had great weather, which is a shock for a Bank Holiday, and we also laughed a lot ... photos to follow.

I worked this morning ... but now want to get on with some photo sorting, so will close here ...

10 – International Safety Pin Day: Invented in 1849, where would we be without them? Or do you think there is less of a place for them in modern life than there was in the past?
There's always a place for a safety pin ... even if it's only to hold on my paper poppy come November 11th!

11 – Eight Track Tape Day: Eight Track Tape Day recognizes an era that was here and gone in a short 20 years. Are you old enough to remember eight tracks? Some technologies, like the Betamax, never caught on even though they were the superior product. Can that be said of eight tracks?

Yes, I remember 8-track, and Betamax.

12 – World Hamster Day: Did you know there are 24 different species of hamsters? Have you ever had a hamster as a pet?

No, but a pet-sat a couple when I was a mid teen ... and they survived the week!!

Right, let's get on x

It was lovely to celebrate with them - their invite thanked people for being there for them, and that the 3 of them had survived the year.

I worked yesterday eafternoon/evening.

This morning I got washing on the line - great weather for that here.  warmish, but a great breeze.  Then i did a bit of shopping before spending a couple of hours sorting out my back garden.  It may be patio, but I do like lots of tubs of plants, so hopefully it will look great in the coming months.

Now I am here, and going to get my ironing done in a moment.

I am going to Nick & Brenda's for Easter Day ... after Mum & Dad died that has been our tradition (well except for lockdown year).  One of my nephews is on a 3 month tour of Australia so he won't be there, but hopefully will get to catch up with everyone else.  Tim & Claire have gone up for a couple of days, and although invited I decided to decline.  Partly as the original plan for Lily was for today, and then decided it would be less stressful as I am the only one of the family who doesn't like football, so I know what this evening will be about.  I also still like to go to bed earlier than they do ... so much easier to do a "day return" tomorrow.  So, lets get caught up with the questions -

7 – World Health Day: Founded in 1950 by the World Health Organisation. What could you start to do today that will have a positive effect on your health?
Over the last couple of years I have gradually been improving my health anyway.

8 – Zoo Lovers Day: Do you think zoos do an important job in teaching and conservation or do you think it is time to stop keeping animals in captivity?
I love safari parks, and zoos, as I don't plan to go on an actual safari, so it's the only way I will get to see a giraffe up close.  I do think conservation and care is a million times better than it was.  So am positive about them

9 – Name Yourself Day: Maybe you always felt like your name didn’t reflect who you are, or maybe you just want to try something new. If you could re-invent yourself for one day by choosing a new name, what name would you choose?
I love my name.  However both Mum & Dad admitted that they did think of giving me a second middle name, that of Victoria.  That would have been good as both my grandmothers had that as one of their middle names, and it turned out I am the only grand-daughter on both sides.

Right, lets get on.

Hope that you are all having a good Easter weekend x

Maundy Thursday

Thursday, April 6th, 2023 11:21 am
debris4spike: (Default)
As so we get to Maundy Thursday again ... the time when Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples.  In the post I have done already today the Church had an amazing plaster representation -
Lanhydrock Church (3)

This year King Charles is going to York Minster to give out the Maundy Money ... with 74 men, and 74 women being given the offerings.

I have been to Pilates, and tried not to tie myself in knots, and mostly managed!  Now I'm here, but working later ... and then have a lazy evening planned.

I do want to get a few icons made though before all that so -

6 – Plan your epitaph day: what message would you like your headstone to send out to the future?

Haven't although I have decided what hymns I want. I know I want the phrase "called home" rather than died ... but maybe it's something I need to think about.

Right, let's get on x

I had a really good Easter weekend.

Yes, I went to Nick & Brenda's and Tim & Claire were able to come as well so it was lovely to all sit down to Easter Day lunch together ... and to be at Church with my 2 brothers & their wives as well as one of my nephews.  Soa  special day.  In the afternoon most of us went for a walk, which was lovely but ended up being 6 miles and as I was not in flat shoes I have sore calves, still!  (Photos to come)

Then yesterday I picked Christine up and we went to a Stately Home again ... and, yes, photos to follow.

Now I worked this morning in a busy clinic, but mostly nice people.

Well, I want to get the photos sorted so I can post them tomorrow ... and will try & catch up with you later.  But, before I go -

19. What still makes you cringe when you think back on it?

I was a teenager in the 1970's ... so, yes, some of the outfits !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll catch up later x

Low Saturday

Saturday, April 16th, 2022 12:38 pm

Yes, that's what today is known as.  Yet, I have just had another lovely walk in the sunshine, and it looks as if I could actually sun-bathe today if I wanted to ... it's lovely.

Tomorrow I will be going to Nick & Brenda's as she is at long last testing negative (and hopefully all the others are still OK, as well).  Tim & Claire were both negative for the first time today so they may come as well, as we had planned to be together for the Easter Morning service, and then lunch ... so we shall see about as to who is there.  It would be nice if the boys went as well, but only Andrew goes to Church now.

Other than that I plan another lazy day today, although may sort through my jumpers and see if there were any I didn't wear this winter that could go to Charity.

I probably won't be around on Monday either as I am meeting up with Christine for a day out, so before I sign off here there are 3 days of answers -

16. What sport could you play the longest in a televised game, without anyone discovering you're not a professional athlete?
Does tea drinking count?

17. What fictional (TV/movie/book) character(s) have you had a crush on over the years?
Do I really have to say his name ... I mean, look at my user name! Yes, SPIKE
But, I also have liked
1 - Avon from Blakes 7
2 - Hawkeye from M*A*S*H
3 - Sully from Dr Quinn

18. What was the worst shopping experience you've ever had?
I am not really a fan of shopping ... so tend to avoid it as much as possible, in general!

Well I think that's me up to date ... I will aim to catch up with you all later.

Happy Easter xx
debris4spike: (Default)
As I type this I have washing on the line, and in a moment I shall be doing some ironing.  Although to be honest I have a pair of jeans that need it, and a skirt and my uniform that really need smoothing as they are not too bad, just not smart enough for me.

And this is where I am having the problem - this week the tranee has been wearing uniforms that are so, so creased ... they would not, due to the material, look as bad if she had slept in them..  I mentioned it day #1, and her answer was that she didn't own an iron.  Apparently (I heard from a colleague on Friday) that everyone had asked/told her about it, all week, and that had been her answer.  I am sorry, but a cheep iron is not expensive ... or she could have asked to borrow one from one of us.  But, no, she has worn crumpled/creased clothes all week.  Yes, it's uniform policy to iron, but for me, it is a case of looking smart ... personal pride.

So, sorry, but I had to bite my tongue all week, so needed to rant!

Sorry, as well that I didn't check in yesterday - as it turned out the clinic went well.  However I had a sports massage booked, and it was an earlier time than I had thought.  After treatment (on my shoulders/neck) I don't tend to turn on the pc, so had to miss another day here.  So I am ctching up, and then heading off with a farewell ... to see you all next week.  But, as ever -

8. Are you an organized person? What techniques and tools do you use to keep yourself organized?
No - and NO, and NO

9. How quickly do you adapt to new technology?

I don't often use much - but do like being on the pc, and have learnt about Kindles, and the icon making ... that's the limit of the new technology in my life

10. What scrambles your brain every time you think about it?
How mucch of my hobbies/housework etc needs to be done. However much I do, there is always a lot more added to the bottom of the "to do" list.

Well - Happy Palm Sunday tomorrow ... see you Monday xx
debris4spike: (Default)
... Yes, after rain overnight and a slightly dull morning, while I was working, but now the sun is out.  I had to go and collect my prescription and walked a longer way round.  In actual fact I had aimed to do a bit of shopping, as well, but forgot to collect my credit card, so instead it was just a nice walk in the sunshine (although a bit windy, but it is only early April, so I can't complain)

Clinic had gone well again - I am now really panicing about tomorrow as 4 clinics down andbasically nice people and home either early or on time.

I do want to get some Easter Cards written in a minute, as it is something I now do for a fww friends, and family.  So that is a task for this afternoon ... but before I head off to do that ...

7. Which fictional character would be the most boring to meet in real life?
Superman - as no one knows who he really is

Well that's me up to date - see you tomorrow (if I survive, despite my fears)

Happy Easter

Yesterday was a really nice day.

it started with a Church Service for half an hour - a lovely time of contemplation on the suffering of Jesus on the cross.  We actually finished with one of my favourite hymns ... even if it was the "other" tune than my favourite!  So will sing along as I type up this scribble!

After that I drove to Newton Abbot to meet up with Christine.  As she doesn't drive the plan was for me to drive the few miles between us, and for her to buy the pasties!

So we met up and did a circular walk around Wolborough, a district of Newton Abbot.  We spent some time wandering round the cemetery as we both like that, and then sat (apart) on a bench and enjoyed our pastie (and an Easter biscuit!).  We both spotted the first bluebells of the season, so that made an extra splash of colour.

From there we walked around the hill in that overlooked Newton, before heading back via Newton Abbot cemetery (where Christine's mum rests), and then back to the car.  It was about 4 1/2 miles, and sunny but cool.  So a lovely afternoon.

So here are photos - which are also my PhotoFriday set!

A great Easter image I spotted in the Churchyard of 3 crosses -

Then back home ... and, yes, I had hot cross buns for tea!

So, now it's Saturday and I had a 3 mile walk this morning before doing this, and later I shall go and get a few bits of grocery, before a lazy evening.

Tomorrow I am going to have Easter Dinner at Tim & Claire's ... although it will be in the evening, not lunchtime which is when I usually eat my main meal.  However I am looking forward to it.

So, all in all a really nice Easter weekend.

However I do have 3 questions to do before I do anything else today!  Here we go -

2. Do you listen to any podcasts?
No

3. Favorite fast food chain?
McDonald's or Pizza Hut

4. What are your goals for the next year?
I want to finally get to see my Deborah tank (the holiday has been delayed from last year, to this year, and now to next year!)

Maundy Thursday

Thursday, April 1st, 2021 03:34 pm
debris4spike: (Default)
Maundy Thursday is a special day in the Christian calender, in England. For Christians around the world it is the day that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His desciples. But in England it is also the time when The Sovereign gives a gift of money to a number of deserving people. The first Maundy Money ceremony took place in the reign of Charles II, when the king gave people undated hammered coins in 1662. The coins were a four penny, three penny, two penny and one penny piece. By 1670 the king started giving out a dated set of all four coins.

And today was no different with the monarch honouring a string of community heroes with symbolic Royal Maundy service coins despite the Westminster Abbey event being unable to be held due to Covid.

In a letter, the Queen wrote her "personal thanks" to the recipients, adding: "I am sure you will be sad, as I am, that present circumstances make it impossible for that Service to take place.

"I hope however that this Maundy Gift will remind you for years to come that your efforts have been truly appreciated."

During the Royal Maundy service, the Queen would have distributed Maundy money to 95 men and 95 women - as she will be 95 on April 21 this year. The money is a red purse contains a small gift of ordinary coins totalling £5.50, and a white purse contains 95p in silver Maundy coins. Maundy coins are specially minted and are legal tender.

However due to Covid, the event was cancelled for the second year in a row.

Well i am a bit later today as I had to wait around for a phonecall from my doctor.  So having done this scribble while waiting, I am now going to finish and have a walk - I may not go too far as clinic was very "full on" - again nice people, but they all seemed to have assorted health problems that left us very delayed in finishing.

But, as ever -

1. Do you have any channels you regularly watch on YouTube?
Yes & no!  I watch our Church service "live" ona  Sunday morning, but it is also on a You Tube Channel - Pinhoe Road Baptist Church, Exeter

Easter Monday

I know I have been terrible ... I didn't even pop in to wish you all a Happy Easter, and I don't really have any excuses. Anyway, I took this photo yesterday (for a challenge on [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger) just as our Easter Day Communion Service was starting (spot the glass of squash waiting ... I don't like red wine!), so thought I would share it here

 photo DSC_0099_zpsu1ydjg8t.jpg

It just seems that the days go by and I don't really accomplish much. I feel very much in limbo - butI suppose some of that is guilt that I am still unable to work ... and that in itself is probably slowing my healing. I have had a slow walk with Jiffy (all his walks are slow now), and done a bit of housework, and even did some sorting out, and now typing this, and I feel quite shaky-tired. So I know I am unable to get back to work ... and still find my concentration levels shot (which is why LJ has not really come onto my radar)

I know there isn't an easy answer, but that doesn't help the frustration levels.

Still, enough whining ... how are you all?

I do hope that life is going well with you all.  One of my nephew's girlfriends had a "scare", but so far all those I am close to are free from the virus.  Two of my nephews are on furlough, and one of my sisters-in-law is a classroom assistant, so working one morning a week.  My other brother & wife are both working from home ... sadly Tim is extra busy as he works with kids who are being abused, and with more people at home, the awful thing is there are more kids for him to help.

Well as we are all struggling to fill our days, there is no real news ... so will close here.  I am binge watching Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman ... so that's a good way to fill in boring evenings, when there is nothing on TV

Keep well & safe

One Hot Walk

Friday, April 19th, 2019 04:33 pm
debris4spike: (Spring)
However it is great to have a Bank Holiday that has good weather.

I took Jiffy for a shortish walk to Killerton grounds (my nearest Stately Home.  I decided that if I didn't do something I would be annoyed with myself for wasting the oppertunity, and also in not giving Jiffy something different.  He will be 13 next month, and sometimes he really shows his age.

So, we went, we wandered ... and we got hot, but it was good to do

Making a hot dog, and spotting some bluebells )

PS - Happy Good Friday everyone.
