Challenge #5

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

When I was at school I was told that I was no good at writing, at all. However when I first watched BtVS it prompted me to think of a better ending ... and I discovered LJ, and fandom (again). And, I wrote my story It's All A Question Of Timing So, yes, I wrote that and have since written other stories. I will never be great at writing, but it's something that I do enjoy from time to time.

The other problem I had at school was from my art classes. My art teacher found it impossible to work with the fact I am colour-blind. But on LJ I found icons ... and started with basic cropping, and worked up. I have found that the art programmes don't worry too much as they have tools I use ... and I truly love icon making. I enter 4 or 5 competitions a month, and even though I rarely do well, I enjoy it.

So, thank you LJ and Fandom for helping me to prove 2 of my teachers wrong!!

Challenge #4

Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be e to set your own goals! Of course we can all make large or ambitious goals, remember that small and/or short goals are also good! Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The trouble is that all my personal wishes are the same as I have typed over the last couple of years.

For fandom -
I so want to really work on making better banners
With icons I want to work on combining different fonts in the same image.
I have a WIP (over a few years) that I want to finish
I do want to get back to writing, again.

For RL -
Spring cleaning ... in fact, any cleaning!!
My shed needs re-organising

Sadly most of those are similar to previous years ... maybe this year will be better!!

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

What a great question - but it's taken me some time to think about!

One of the many things that draws me into a fandom is the OTP .... I listed them in challenge 1.

However, there are a few fandoms where I could see my pairs ending up with someone else. Maybe at the heart of me I can't see how they would be happy in a different pairing (!), but I could see it happening.

For example, in M*A*S*H (the series) I am a great fan of Margaret & Hawkeye .... but there again I think that either of them could have ended up with Trapper-John.

On Stargate Atlantis, I am a fan of John and Elizabeth, but do wonder if John could have ended up with Tayla.

But, I suppose that, even though I have written that, my heart still prefers my original pairings!

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Most people who know me know how I got into fandom via the internet .... and that's through having my friend's teenage girls stay with me, and getting mesmerised by an actor's voice ... a season 7 episode of BtVS ... and the actor being James Marsters ... and,the rest is history.

However back in 1982 when a TV series finished I managed to spot a magazine advert for a fan club.

The TV show was called Blake's 7, and ran for 4 years, and has actually never been repeated (to my knowledge). It was a Sci Fi show, and the last episode saw most of the crew killed off, so no come-back.

Anyway, I sent away for details of "Horizon" and joined. About every 6 - 8 months we got a magazine with letters, articles, questions etc - it was written by fans for fans. About every 6 months we were also offered a short story book - so the first time of seeing fan-fics, although unlike AO3, you couldn't put a filter on the ones you wanted to see!

On a side note, I did actually write a letter to one of the magazines in the mid 90's and ended up meeting someone from the next town (I have an unusual surname) ... and Sharon & I are still friends.

And, yes, I still enjoy Blake's 7 ... occasionally making icons, and if there is a Cally/Avon fic on AO3, then I will read it.

Challenge #1

Update your fandom information. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I haven't really updated my profile page, as things don't really change much in my life.

I still love making icons, and I suppose that is my main contribution to fandom.

I also love reading fan-fics, and use AO3 ... but try to leave Kudos or a comment on many of the works.

I have written, in the past, and keep aiming to get back to it.

My fandoms are -

Blakes 7 = Avon - Cally
BtVS = Buffy - Spike
Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman = Dr Mike - Sully
Dresden Files = Harry - Karrin
M*A*S*H (the series) = Hawkeye - Margaret
Stargate Atlantis = John - Elizabeth
Stargate SG1 = Jack - Sam
Star Trek Voyager = Katherine - Chakotay

There are a few other things I did into from time to time, but nothing has really grabbed me like those shows & pairings.

Snowflake Challenge #5

Search in your current space, whether brick-and-mortar or digital. Post a picture (a link to a picture will be fine!) or description of something that is or represents:

1. Something your favorite character would like
2. Something that makes you laugh
3. A fandom place you would like to visit
4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet
5. Something you find comforting
6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood
7. A piece of clothing you love
8. A book or song with a color in the title
9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand

1. Something your favorite character would like
JD

2. Something that makes you laugh
Sorry, it's an old, and well known limerick, but it still makes me chuckle
There once was a man of Bengal
      Who was asked to a Fancy Dress Ball;
      He murmured: "I'll risk it
      And go as a biscuit!'
But the dog ate him up in the hall.

3. A fandom place you would like to visit
Atlantis ... the floating city from SGA ... that would be fascinating to see a city that could sink, or react to some of it's inhabitant's DNA

4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet
Jim Butcher - would love to know what is next for Harry; but also if the story to this point was organised in his mind when he first started writing the series.
[livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly ... so I can say thank you for all the grea Spuffy fanfics.

5. Something you find comforting
My faith
I also love AO3 ... where my fandom couple will end up together ... yes, I check the tags first!

6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood

7. A piece of clothing you love
IActually I love most of the things in my wardrobe (I am not someone who goes shopping for the sake of shopping).  As I type this I have red jeans and a baggy jumpre, but there again I love the formal styly of dresses that I wear to Church on a Sunday ... so nothing special to share (sorry)

8. A book or song with a color in the title
White Night

9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand
After seven years - why seven?  We are home now.  (Kathryn's thoughts)

Right, I think that is this set of questions done ... great selection, thank you.

1. A favorite character
2. Something that makes you laugh
3. A bookshelf
4. A game or hobby you enjoy
5. Something you find comforting
6. A TV show or movie you hope more people will watch
7. A piece of clothing you love
8. A thing from an old fandom
9. A thing from a new fandom

1. Come on, look at my name. It may be the name I chose years ago, but the character of Spike (from BtVS) is still amazing ... love his story, his highs & lows ... and a great actor to portray it!

2. This is a Christmas card made by a friend. I loved the Val Kilmer version of Batman, and love Ewoks (neither of which Chis likes), but she drew this card of Val Kilmer as an Ewok ... but, didn't realise till she saw me open it, that he has 2 sets of ears ... But that just makes the card more special, and gives me a smile.

3. I have got loads & loads of books (& bookshelves), but this small section is special ... books written by my Dad (including his PhD), a poetry book of Mum's poetry, books written by French friends, a couple by one of my brothers ... and a couple written by a friend and partially dedicated to me.
DSC_0523

4. I was brought up doing jigsaws, ans still love them. This one was a Christmas gift from a brother, and is of London ... which is a city I visit every year, and love.
DSC_0528

5. My faith. For me I love knowing that God is in charge ... and I have a future in Heaven.

6. I rewatch a lot of shows ... most of which have been loved over the years, so hard to find one that needs more viewers. Although Blakes 7 was only ever shown on mainstream TV once, back in the 70's - 80's. I also love The Champions ... a silly show from late 60's.

7. Not a great clothes lover ... although I do still have Mum's wedding dress from 1952

8. As I just said, Blakes 7 is a long-time favourite show ... and I was a member of their fan club during the late 80's ... and this was my mug I used, now in a cabinet in my lounge

9. I tend to enjoy fan-fiction from my newer fandoms ... and these are on my Kindle (this is my one that I bought just before Christms, complete with cover

In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

  • I want to get my 2 x W.I.P.s finished.

  • Again I am looking at doing more work on banners etc

  • I want to compltely re-vamp my garden. It had been an aim last year, but I had to have work done and it got completly ignored ... so that's a plan (again) this year.

  • I aim to get back into playing my clarinet & saxophone.

Well, I do wonder how many of those will get done!

In your own space, update your fandom information! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For any of you who know me, not much has changed over the last few years ... although I at long last watched Stargate Atlantis ... and loved it. I am a great fan of John/Elizabeth (and am in fact slowly wring a fic).

But other than that my fandoms are Spuffy from BtVS (the series & no comics), Katheryn Janeway/Chakotay from Star Trek Voyager (haven't seen Prodigy yet)

Still love a lot of TV series ... but just look at my Profile, as not much changes. ...  One boring girl!

Well weirdly (for most of you) my fandom doesn't need updating ... sorry folks, but I a, one "boring" person!

I like :-
  • BtVS (but not Angel, or the comics)
  • Star Trek, Voyager (... although also like Discovery)
  • Stargate SG1 (... and am just starting Atlantis for the first time)
  • Blakes 7
These I read, and will write and do icons for

However I also enjoy watching the DVDs of :-
  • M*A*S*H, the series
  • Hercules
  • Dr Quinn
  • Vampire Diaries
There are a few TV series I watch as they come out, or if I bump into the re-runs, such as Dr Who and Downton Abbey

Yes, I make icons for 4 or 5 different LJ, and DW comms.  I will write Spuffy fan-fic, and am a mod for [community profile] photo_scavenger  ... however I basically blog over at LiveJournal ... only here for a few things, like this, and a couple of icon challenges.

12. Do you like to be the center of attention?

No, No & No

If I can hide under something, behind something, or not go at ll then I am happier.

Clinics at the hospital are continuing, which means my work continues without having to do longer hours in working on a ward.  Happily I am slowly feeling that bit better week on week ... at this time I am still just doing a few hours a day (not good on the bank balance), but am able to spend time working on the computer (& keeping up with you) ... although I would hope that maybe I can do a few few hours more in the near future..

So I am actually getting back to doing some icomns for a couple of Comms ... and maybe will even look into learning some more techniques ... anything to avoid cleaning!  When I am at work we spend so much time cleaning it's nice to avoid it when I get home!!

Hope everyone else is keeping well & safe.

Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As I commented on the #3 challenge I am a huge fan of Janeway/Chakotay in Star Trek Voyager.

Ironically I almost didn't watch the series, as I am not a great fan of "women leaders", but a friend asked me to video a couple of episodes, in the days when you had to either watch what was on video, or no TV!! So I saw a couple of episodes and was hooked.

Yes, we have a female boss, but as you explore the story you realise she is totally by herself. No help, no family, no one to ask advice from ... and as boss no one she could really ask for help from. In some ways, although certainly not a boss I have always been a real loner. I have increased my love of this fandom in the last year or so, since I lost my parents ... andcertainly with lockdown. That isolation that Katheryn Janeway has really seems to ring bells!

Chakotay was the great "bad boy" who had accepted what had happened, and was doing his best to try to help everyone. Again something I can link myself to ... not the bad boy bit, but I do like to help people, and like him still tend to feel a bit isolated. However he fell for his boss, and really spent time trying to help her ... but she only accepted help to a certain point.

However the theory was that they wouldn't get home for 50+ years ... so maybe if they had both had time to actually accept the bad things that were happening, maybe they could accept each other.  One argument she used was that she wouldn't want to get close to anyone that she would then have to "order" into a risky situation, as if she already had feelings then she would still have been injured by they pain.

So, yes, good fan-fic between the 2 of them is fun to read.

For many, I know you would be expecting me to write about Spike ... as yes, I could write about him for ages.  I am still a fan of his character, but thought i would do something different!

Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

LOL - I suppose I should just re-post the answer I typed last year! I don't think I did anything from that list!!

However let's just get one item done - and that's the work of the multi-pictured, and multi-layered banners used in fandom.
debris4spike: (Default)
In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

What a great callenge - this will take some thinking about ... but, here goes:
  1. I would lke some more moving icons.  I have a few that I have snagged at various time ... mostly Spuffy one.  I have one Janeway-Chakotay, and would love another.  I would also like a couple of Jack & Sam from Stargate SG1.  At some point I will learn to make them, but that is a test for a later date.
  2. I love SeasonalSpuffy but wonder if there are any similar comms for my Janeway/Chakotay and Jack/Sam loves.
  3. I love PhotoScavenger (and am one of the Mods!), but wonder if there are any Comms that work on other challenges.  Or is there someone who would like to work with me to slowly challenge my/our photography skills.
I am sure there are other things that I will wish I added, but that's about all I can think of!

debris4spike: (Default)
Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges!

I am not a great one for being involved in various communities recently .... but there are a few.

On D/W is [community profile] icons10in20 ... as the name suggests, 10 icns, all based on seperate prompts
[community profile] seasonal_spuffy ... assorted fandom around Spuffy ... Spike & Buffy, from the TV series
and [community profile] snowflake_challenge ... you may have heard of this one!

Over on L/J is also seasonal_spuffy, but some other icon competition sites that I take part in -
itsabattlefield ... they have "big battles" of 10 icons based on one theme, and individual battles
monthlyinspo .... another comm that has a month to make 10 icons, with a single theme
moviefilmstills .... 5 icons based on a single film theme
season20in20 .... just re-started.  A traditional 20 icons, in 20 days, with all the prompts set, and all based on your choice of TV season

And a couple of non-fandom ones

monthlydiaryday ... just write up about the 12th of the month.  Nice to see normal life around the world
photo_scavenger .... get out a camera.  A theme per week ... just post a photo under that prompt (members only)

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hi

My name is Debris4spike - and as you can guess I love the character Spike, from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.  I have done some fan-fic writing in thepast, as well as making icons.

My other fandoms that I have done icons for are Blakes 7, Star Trek Voyager, Stargate SG1, Dr Who

I tend to be very old-fashioned.  And very rarely find a TV series that I can get behind.

I am hoping this month will re-challenge me as I have been missing a bit from fandom.

debris4spike: (Default)
Day 7

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 2 might be a good place to start.) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh I am a bit behind - but that is one of the many things I love about this challenge. All the Mods start by reminding us that it is not a problem if we are late. I did an extra day at work, and it really knocked me out ... but am trying to catch up now.

Anyway - I tend to be very much "Yes, I love it, No I don't" sort of person. But, I have read a few fics of other pairings, and have bookmarked a few other fics to read. So that has been something I normally wouldn't do - a good challenge to start the year.

No, I haven't found another pairing to "ship", but I have enjoyed pushing myself to the challenge.
debris4spike: (Default)
Day 6

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

A lot of my fandom wishes are covered by AO3 ... although you can never get enough fan-fic for my OTP's of Spuffy, Jack/Sam (Stargate) of Kathryn/Chakotay (Voyager).  So here's wish 1, but one that is always slowly getting granted.

One thing (well 2) that I would love is an icon of my Stargate or Voyager OTP, that is moving (like the Spuffy icon I am using)  I make icons, and enjoy doing it, but other than the changing picture type, I can't do the ones that show a moving scene.  So my absolute choice would be the Jack/Sam scene in season 8 while they are watching Jacob in hospital; or the New Earth scene from Voyager.

My final wish can't be granted.  I have enjoyed when James (Marsters) has done his fan days in the past, and would love for him to do another one.
