Challenge #5

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

When I was at school I was told that I was no good at writing, at all. However when I first watched BtVS it prompted me to think of a better ending ... and I discovered LJ, and fandom (again). And, I wrote my story It's All A Question Of Timing So, yes, I wrote that and have since written other stories. I will never be great at writing, but it's something that I do enjoy from time to time.

The other problem I had at school was from my art classes. My art teacher found it impossible to work with the fact I am colour-blind. But on LJ I found icons ... and started with basic cropping, and worked up. I have found that the art programmes don't worry too much as they have tools I use ... and I truly love icon making. I enter 4 or 5 competitions a month, and even though I rarely do well, I enjoy it.

So, thank you LJ and Fandom for helping me to prove 2 of my teachers wrong!!

That's wonderful! Finding something you really like to do is so great.

It is much more important to have fun with writing or creating icons than to be perfect with it. This is what I have learned over time.

Brutal school critique :( I'm sorry you got that thrown at you. It's nice to get kudos on AO3, sometimes that's a salve against comments like this.

Also, speaking of kudos, congrats on getting so much iconing done! The only way to improve is to keep practicing, and maybe analyzing what it is that others are winning for so that you can decide whether you want to fold those skills into your own practice. Keep going, man!

Proving a teacher wrong is always very satisfying! I'm surprised you don't win on the icons — you make some beautiful ones. I'm just too lazy to tinker with which ones I use!

I was always a good writer and the teachers took note of it right away. Fandom over the years just improved it. And there were a lot of different genres of fandom and just writing in general that most people would be surprised at.

I think a lot of my fandom would scare people. There were extensive ones too that would be many many pages when I printed them off for myself. I would lose myself in them as I wrote!

I'm glad you've found a cool way to express yourself visually! I used to draw, many years ago, but I fell out of love with it... nowadays I'm interested in basic video and photography editing. Just enough to get by. I might go into icon making, too, one day... who knows?

It's always great to expand one's ways of creating.
