Still a bit behind with a few, but am going to try and do them all this year. Last year I only got less than half of them done.

Challenge #15

Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

I had quite a few memorable and joyous moments last year. Hard to pick a favourite.

For a fandom thing I suppose having one of my icons picked as an example of an on-going competition was pretty special. I see such amazing work, so was actually shocked to see one of mine on a description of the competition.

I was overjoyed to at last get to Egypt. It is a country that I have wanted to visit since I was a child. Dad was the same, and never got there. Back when I was 10, Tutankhamen's mask came to London and I never saw it - so that was amazing to at long last see that. The temples were stunning, as well. A great trip.

Over the years I inherited Mum's jewellery (as well as both grandmother's wedding rings). I wear Mum's stuff all the time. However I didn't know what to do with the 2 wedding rings. Then I spoke to a designer and she has made the 2 into a necklace, where the integrity of both rings survive. So to wear rings that are over 100 years old, and belong to those 2 ladies, is a pretty momentous event.

On a personal note - yes, I had an amazing event ... but it's personal (maybe one day)
debris4spike: (Default)
The last couple of days have been busy at work ... so pays the bills!  Although, especially yesterday with the nice weather, it is frustrating that I was working in a basement.

But I have today off ... and have been out to one of the out-lying districts of the city, Topsham . The reason for the trip is that I had an appointment at a jewellery designer.  I had 2 reasons to go.

  • The first is that I wanted her to repair a necklace.  I had aimed to wear this one at my nephew's wedding, but the catch broke.  It had only been worn 6 times in it's 100 yeasr ... My grandmother, Aunt & Mum wore it at their weddings.  And I had worn it the 3 times I had been a bridesmaid.  So I wanted to carry on the tradition.  The jeweller said it was probably good I didn't wear it as the gemstone was very loose, as well.  So she is going to clean & repair it.

  • The other reason has been an ongoing thought ... I have both of my Grandmother's wedding rings.  Beautiful gold, which I could just sell, or keep as they are or get them changed.  I wanted to be able to wear them, but didn't want to lose their individual integritoes. so I was very torn.  Erin suggested a simple necklace with the 2 rings just interlinked ... so that is what she she is going to look into, for me.

Anyway ... it was nice to see the River Exe, as well as both the village & Church ...

When I got home I got the washing on the line ... had lunch, and now I am here.  Later I have the ironing to do, and hopefully will chat to Auntie Mary later, as well.

Before I disappear I will both catch-up, and do this weekends, as I am meeting up with Brenda tomorrow for a day out.  She suggested it and then was talking about how Nick is not doing so well, so thought it would be a double good reason to meet up with her ... enjoy the day and have a chat.  So ...

9. In 1904 the steam locomotive City of Truro became the first steam engine to exceed 100mph. Have you ever travelled on a high speed train? Is there are good train network where you live?
I don't tend to use trains much, as coaches are cheeper.
Exeter has pretty good rail services, some locally and a direct route to London.

10. World Lupus Day. Are you aware of the symptoms? Will you wear purple today?
Sorry, wearing green today!

11. Have you ever used a foam roller to self massage (there's some tips here)? The MELT method also uses a foam roller to realign and stretch joints and facia - have you ever heard of it?
Not used a foam roller, but have used a harder roll occasionally.

12. International Nurses Day - did you ever want to be a nurse when you were small?
Hee ... no!
In fact, when I gave up being an osteopath a few people suggested nursing, and I said anything but!  Then I got the job, and loved it!

Right, I will try and catch up with you all ina moment ... but other than that, see you Monday x

A Lazy Weekend

After I walked into Exeter and back, Friday evening, I decided to have a lazy weekend rather than meet up with Brenda on Saturday ... and, yes, it was a good thing. I ended up snoozing, and really did very little all day.

Sunday morning, I didn't set my alarm, and ended up missing Church as I was sleeping in late ... so, all in all it was a good healing weekend.

I do sometimes listen to my body, and am trying to get better at that. Yes, I totally enjoyed the trip, and would do it again, but really it was mind-blowing.

Today I am having a computer morning, although have walked down to buy some milk and potatoes ... but this afternoon I have a sports massage appointment, and when I return I aim to do more of my journal.

Anyway, despite being lazy I still managed to get some photos done ....

Saturday the 9th ... as I said I was lazy, but still nice to show off my new necklace that I bought.  This spells Deborah in hieroglyphics -
8th March

On Sunday, I did actually spend 10 mins starting the holiday journal (as you can see my lounge is still chaos)
9th March

And, as I said, I walked to the shops for milk ... and Spring is still springing

Right, let's get this posted ... and do today's question ...

National Napping Day - do you like to nap? Can you Power Nap?
Oh yes, I can nap ... can sleep anywhere, any time. have always been good at that, but since my chronic fatigue has flared up, it has been easy.
I don't find power-naps helpful, though.

Right, let's get some more photos sorted x

I Managed!!

Yes, I managed to do a shift on the switchboard .... I don't think I lost anyone in the system ... but will admit some of it was slow going. I didn't pick up as many calls as maybe I could have done, but it was nice to do some, relax for a few minutes and do some more. I am working again on the next 2 days, so hopefully doing the 3 like that will mean that I am fairly positive about most of the standard calls ... although I think it is still going to be some time before I answer the emergency calls and the boiler warnings, etc that are covered by the team there.

I got on well with the others I was working with today which makes it easier to ask for help.

It still wouldn't be my first choice as I love the face to face, but good to have the challenge ... and the work!

The previous day I worked the full day down on the main reception, and it was a good shift ... busy, but that helps the time go by.

I had hoped to relax this afternoon, but just heard from Tim and we are meeting at a pub half-way between us for a meal later, as he has a change of work coming up. So it will be tiring, but be good for him to be able to chat.

Here are the photo catch-ups for today and the previous 2 days.

I think I told you the saga of Auntie Joyce and having to leave everything in the solicitor's hands ... however I did manage to get her to give us the gold ring she wore ... it is on my ring finger. (Yes I love jewellery) ... but am doubly glad to have the ring as I knew it had belonged to my Great Aunt, before my Aunt ... but it turns out it belonged to my Great-Grandmother before her ... so 4 generations ...

Right - let's get on ....

Can you use chopsticks? Can you play Chopsticks on the piano? Today is all about chopsticks...
Yes, I can, and do, use chopsticks … when I get a Chinese take-away then it’s always chopsticks I use
I used to be able to play chopsticks, but haven’t tried for many years

#~#~#~#~

I tried posting this yesterday, but had real computer problems ... so it's now "tomorrow"

I had a lovely meal with Tim & Claire ... amd nice to have a reason to have a walk.

Just got in froma full 6 hours on the switchboard,  I am still insure as to the job as much of it is repetative, but all in all I am still quite stressful ... so planning a lazy evening.

When I went to the freezer in my shed to get something out for dinner a bit later I spotted some buds ... although, as the forecast sau=ys the weather is cooling I do wonder if it will survive
7th February

Right, so have another question to do  to keep up -

Have you ever made homemade soup? Care to share your favourite recipe?
Don't have a recipe, but make it from veg, tomatoes etc ... whatever I have saved, or have that can get thrown in!

Right - I will post this today ... and try and catch up with you x

I had to confirm that I want the jewellers to go ahead with my necklace repair.    Dad bought Mum a pearl necklace for their Pearl Wedding Anniversary in 1982, and was one of the few things that didn't get taken in a burglary about 10 years later, as she was wearing it ... in fact she wore it a lot.  As pearl is my birthstone (and I love it), I have worn it a lot.  However last week the string broke ... but luckily for me it was a knotted string, so didn't lose any of the pearls.  I took it into the jewellers when I was in on Monday, but they had to confirm the quote.

I then had to confirm another order ... so phone calls doen.

After that I did 2 batch bakes ... one a sausage and potatoe bake, and the other minced beef with tomatoes & onions ... so they are cooling ready to divide and freeze.  My friend Christine does not cook at all (she buys ready meals) ... but to me she msses so much (not just the extra money it costs), but to be able to add, or not, flavours.  To make the portion size what you want, etc, etc.  I have a couple of ready meals in the freezer, as well, as sometimes I have a long day at work and it is easy ... but that is a once a month idea.

Yesterday at work was good ... a nice shift.  I was in the main reception desk, which is in the main foyer area of the hospital, so even if not speaking to people and answering enquieries, it is good for people watching.  I know I am not the most fashionable of people, but I do wonder about some people's sense of style.  I did smile though when I saw one of the stretchers being taken out ... the ambulance crew were obviously taking the lady back to her home ... what made me smile was the lady being pushed was sitting up ... and eating.  Yes, she had a hospital bowl, so obviously dinner had been served and she didn't want to miss her pudding, so took it with her ... Good for her.

Right, I am going to sort some birthday pressies out for my nephews.  3 of them have birthdays next week, and had planned to post them today, but as there is a Postal strike, I won't be able to post them until Saturday.  But I want to get them sorted so I don't have to focus on that in a couple of days time.

And - as ever -

23. If, in a multi-story building, you only have to go up or down one or two flights, would you prefer to use the stairs rather than an elevator?
Staires - quicker than waiting for the lift ... and good for the leg muscles.

24. Is there some old family belief, practice, routine or tradition that you know is nonsensical, but you still catch yourself doing it anyway?
No washing on Good Friday, or New Years Day
My Geat-Grandfather's clock has stopped again ... and I did catch myself wondering if anyone in the family had died ... yes, it has stopped around the time of family deaths in the past!

Right, let's get on.

I will try and catch up with you later, but have to go to Church this evening for a Carol rehearsal, so hopefully will get the time later x
debris4spike: (Default)
... Where do the days go?

I am going into work early afternoon, and working through to the evening.

So this morning I want to get some housework done.  I also need to send a couple of pieces of jewellery off to be repaired.  When I was on holiday the ring I gought Mum about 20 years before she died, and she never took off, is one that I wear when I am not working.  However on holiday I was suddenly aware that it felt wrong, and realised it had split.  So although I have to get it repaired, at least I didn't lose it.

All in all an expense ... add to that my kitchen tap has died, and now I realise my printer has given up the ghost.  So, more expense this week ... at least I am working off and on over the next 6 days.

But before I go to the post office -

3. Do you tend to read reviews of films or TV shows that you're considering watching? What about reviews of books or albums? How much influence might a good or bad review have on you?

Sadly I tend to be very boring and re-watch a lot of things. So I don't often see new stuff.
However must admit my brother bought me some DVDs for my birthday, and I gave them a go, and enjoyed them. So, maybe I should be more adventurous (I only said maybe, though!!)

Right I must get on.

I won't have time to post some more photos, but will try and catch up with you all later.
debris4spike: (Default)
... how did that happen? Somehow August arrives tomorrow, so we are well over the half way point!

So I have done some shopping, and some housework ... soon be time to get some dinner sorted.

This afternoon I am being collected by someone from my Church, and we are meeting up with a few other people for a summer get-together. Apparently it is an annual event, but I am new to the "event" ... good thing that numbers are allowed indoors now as it seems a bit damp today.

In other news my postage today was the return of my grandmother's 2 engagement rings. They had been worn through with wear, and both were missing a stone ... one a ruby, and one a diamond. So that was an expensive job, but am pleased they are done. I had sent them to a jeweller who is a brother of someone I work with and am pleased with the result.

Anyway, lunch is calling! So I am off ... but before that ...

31. Have you ever cried in school?
Probably - as I was bullied.

Ummmm - somehow 1st August wasn't on my list, so if others have it I will post that on Monday

Have a good weekend

3 "For The Price Of" 1

I have just come back from my short walk, having gone via the Polling Station.  I was suprised, as I thought it was local council voting ... however when I got there it was the City, the County & the Police Chief of the County.  So I got to vote 3 times, having remembered to take my pencil with me!  The real problem was that the last couple of times I voted I had it easy, as Jiffy went with me so I took the polling paper and asked him to pick a vote for me!  This time I had to vote it all for myself and decide - very tough!

The other half of my walk was to post off a couple of rings to be repaired.  one of the ladies I work with has a brother who is a "chief" goldsmith in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter.  I have been meaning to get them done for ages, and when I saw one of them again this weekend I decided I really needed to get Debbie's brother's name.  The 2 rings had both belonged to my Grandmother (Mum's Mum) ... and both were engagement rings!  One was from pre-WWI, but sadly he was killed in 1915, and then the other was from my Grandfather in 1920.  So it will be good to get them both wearable again.  So I am looking forward to re-gaining that part of my family history.  Anyone who knows me knows I adore jewellery (as did Mum), and it's the one disadvantage of nursing in the NHS ... one ring only (technically stated as a wedding band), but I actually wear 2 plain rings on one of my little fingers.  Tim loves his jewellery, as well - but Nick, and my 2 sisters-in-law only wear as minimum as possible.   (Nick never wears any at all now)

So, now I am here, and getting this scribbled ... and then to make some icons.

Hope you are all having a good Thursday

6. What’s the last thing you said out loud?
"Thank You" ... to the lady who gave me my 3 voting slips

As I have Fridays off work, I decided to try and keep my focus, so decided to go for a walk, complete with camera.  So I went for a walk around the outside of the hospital I work at.  The main building was opened in 1992, however as you can see here, if you want that it's history dates back to 1743

Anway, here is a stroll around the outside of The Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital -
If you drive in, then this is the sign that greets you on the road

This is the main entrance, and as you can see by the ambulances there is a medical triage unit just off camera on the left. However, on the first (second if you came from USA) floor, on the left, is the department where I do most of my work ... so, yes, this is the entrance I use.

This is the Orthopaedic entrance ... and for the observant, there are 3 stories, as the building is very long, and built on a slight hill.

This is the heli-pad, capable of having 2 helicopters on it. The building looking down on it is one of two dialysis units in Exeter

This is the new Medical School building, and actually won an award for design - however judged it obviously never had to walk through it, as it's a weird layout inside. As you can see, at present, it is where one of the Covid clinics are running.

This is Wonford House (and it's gatehouse), and older building amd actually where Claire (my sister-in-law) will be working at some point. It is the admin site for the NHS Devon, as well as the Mental Health HQ for South Devon (ie Offices). Jiffy used to love to walk this way as the grass meant there was always lots to explore, and sniff

And, just to keep up ...
8. Do you often make impulsive purchases?
The thing I to be careful around is jewellery, as I have bought a few things over the years ... and given half a chance, would buy some more!!

Feb 1 What is your birthstone and flower?

I am a June baby ... so my flower is a rose, and my birthstone is a pearl (or a moonstone.) As most of you know I love my jewellery and the most expensie items of jewellery I have bought for myself are pearls (so it was obviosly OK!!)
