A Spring Day Out

As I said, last Thursday Christine and I went to Killerton and it was lovely to see all the daffodils. I think we picked just the right day - after some warmer, brighter days, and before the rain returned.

We have both been nmerous times, but while I can't drive it's the place I can get to with buses, and a reasonable walk.

Further through the grounds ... and into the house )

Killerton has one of the largest costume collections in The National Trust and every year they switch over the display.  This year is not one of my favourite ranges ... but still some lovely items to see.

Wow, 2 days, 2 posts!

Actually I know I owe replies to comments, and also a reply to a freind via email, but wanted to get this done.

I am working again later, but want to actually get some housework done before I go. I still can't get organised, like Mum was, but I am trying to keep on top of things better (no, it's not a new-year resolution otherwise I would never keep it!!)

On Sunday morning it was lovely and dry and I did manage a walk, and took the camera, and spotted some lovely signs that February had started ... and Spring would be on the way -

And, the proof that we have had a lot of rain ... the drops are still lingering -
1st February (7)
Actually it's raining again today so I would be able to take lots of raindrop photos!

Well cleaning is calling ... so I shall get that done, and then hopefully get back here and answer comments, and see what your posts have been saying.

But, as ever, before that -

3. Is there a book you’ve seen made into a film and been disappointed with the result?
The last film adaptation of Emma I saw, I actually turned the TV off after about 1/2 an hour.
Also the last series of Anne Of Green Gables totally invented a storyline that didn't exist.

Right, lte's try and catch up in a moment.

Yay - A Day Off

.... And, even better, the sun is shining.

I had a super lazy morning, so wasn't here, but at least I shall hopefully settle the bugs down soon.

This morning I went to Killerton (the local National Trust property) and walked through some of the grounds, enjoying the Spring flowers -

They also have a costume display that's changed every year.  this year it's the 1920's (more photos to follow).

On the way home I picked up some groceries, and I am now editing the photos, and making some icons as well.  I also plan to actually read a bit, as well.  Making the most of the day off.

Tomorrow will be Church but in the afternoon I am going into Exeter to meet up with Christine as the Bishop's garden is having an open-garden in the afternoon, and with the weekend's weather it is too good an oppertunity to miss.

So - it's a "farewell" until Monday -

4. What was the last book you bought? Have you read it yet?
I bought the book Bonfire, The Chestnut Gentleman ... the sory of Lt.Colonel John McCrae during WWI (he wrote In Flander's Fields), as written by his horse. I bought it the day I saw John McCrae's grave in France. Yes, I have read it.
I bought a load of guide books in Egypt that I am dipping in and out of.

5. Does your phone have the facility to store your payment cards? Do you take advantage of that instead of using your physical card?
I am not a phone person, at all. So it's a physical card.

6. How confident are you about doing your own home renovations? What’s the biggest project you’ve tackled?
I have done decorating, and gardening ... but other than that no.

Right, see you Monday
debris4spike: (Default)
Mind you, when I walked into work this morning the frost was glittering in the grass.  I was certainly glad I didn't need to drive, as my car was frozen.

Work went well this morning - in fact it was fairly steady.  That means the time flows snoothly, but I am not totally stressed out by random questions.  So, a good morning.  Then when I got back I hung my washing out - so hopefully that will all dry, as there is a very slight breeze.

I said to you when I posted on Wednesday that I was going to have a walk, and here are a few of the Spring flowers that I spotted.

So, it is lovely to see colour returning to our gardens.

Yesterday I had a day out with Christine - a National Trust property near Bath. We went there for a Christmas visit in 2023, and got absolutely soaked in torrential rain. Yesterday was beautiful ... in fact the only problem was that driving home I was heading towards the setting sun, which is not fun! So, there will be photos to follow.

So, I need to get those sorted so you can see them. so, until then -

27. Do you regularly snack? What’s your snack of choice? With a hot beverage, or just on its own?
I used to do that a lot, but have tried to be a good girl and keep away from anything between meals.
Hot drink - has to be tea (English Breakfast tea). If white, then strong. If black, then weak.

28. Have you ever eaten a soufflé? Do you know how to make one?
Never made a basic egg one, but have made similar styles of food in the past. I don't even think I have eaten one, either.

Right - photo editing, here I come.

Day 3 Of My Suffolk Trip

Despite being a Sunday I missed Church ... so we had a leisurely breakfast before heading out to their "local" National trust property -

Sadly the part of the house where the family "lived" is now an hotel ... this is the extension that was built to entertain ...

On day 2 we went to the city of Ely ... and it was time spent in the beautiful cathedral, as well as some time in the charity shops (yes, I bought a couple of jigsaws!)

As well as being all behind with posting photos I have icons to make.

This set is for round 32 of  [livejournal.com profile] gen10in30 with a theme of Spring.

All the images are taken from photos that I have taken, over the last couple of Springs.

But this time only for a couple of days.

I am going up to Northamptonshire to visit my "Aunt" ... Mum's best friend.  I am spending the day with her, so it is a very hectic couple of days, but she is great fun, so I am looking forward to the trip.

This morning I met up with someone I have known all my life.  Her parents got married about a year after mine (in fact, Mum & Dad went to the weding.  We now both live this way and try and catch up every so often  ... we went to a National Trust property, the one I went to with Claire a month ago.  However it was good to see the garden with some Spring colour, as well as a brief walk through  the house -

So, let's get ahead with the questions, as I won't be back here until Thursday -

16. In 1822 Rosa Bonheur - artist was born. She specialised in painting animals some of which you can see here. Have you ever tried to draw an animal?
With Toni's help, on the 10th anniversary of Jaykub's death I did a pastel drawing of him ... but I think it was more her than me in so many ways.

17. St Patrick's Day - are there big celebrations of the Patron Saint of Ireland where you live? Do you take part?
Nothing really happens here ... and, no, haven't done any

18. Global Recycling Day - is it easy to recycle items like plastic, metal, glass and paper where you live?

Yes, fortnightly collection ... in a wheelie bin, so we don't even have to sort things

19. International Read to Me Day - did you have family members read to you when you were small? Have you ever had to read aloud to a large number of people?
Mum & Dad used to.
I have read the Bible aloud during Church services

20. National Ravioli Day - do you enjoy Ravioli? What's your favourite flavour combination?

Never had it! (Which I realise is slightly odd!!

Right, let's get this posted x
debris4spike: (Default)
I had a great day in the end, yesterday.

I jad walked to the shops earlier (and caught the bus home) .... In fact I had door-to-door service, as my nearest bus-stop is on a corner, and not nice for the buses to stop at.  The driver asked me whether I wanted to stop before or after, the stop.  I asked for before, and he pulled in literally in front of my house ... door to door!!

I had just packed the shopping away when my door rang ... it was a local counciller canvassing for the elections in May.  He gave me a leaflet which he asked me to read (as his first question was would I be voting for this candidate, to which I had said no) ... so I said I would.  The leaflet ended up just having the name and addresses of the candidate and the secretarial team ... I had expected a promotional flier as to how amazing both Exeter & England would be if I voted that way.  So in the end, it was just a waste of paper!

I then tried logging onto my computer, to get a phone call from Claire asking me to meet her for champagne, to celebrate her 10th anniversary of returning home from her mastectomy ... we met at The Ivy (so it was an expensive afternoon) ... but very nice ... here I am, and you just have to see the loos ...
DSC_0815

DSC_0813

When we left it was to then walk to a pub to meet Tim from work, so we could have a meal, before walking home.  I had suggested it, even though I had dinner at their's yesterday after our day trip, but Tim has had a super tough week, so said it would be nice to start his weekend off on a positive note.

Now it's today ... I have had a short walk as I needed to post a letter, and want to do some exercise (even though it was only about a mile), but still spotted some more signs of Spring -

DSC_0818

DSC_0819

DSC_0821

Now I am here sorting things out, and will try and catch up with you all in a moment.  So, before I post this let me catch up ... it will be 3 days, as on Monday I meeting up with Christine to celebrate her birthday -

18. National Battery Day. In England, we are not permitted to dispose of spent batteries in the general waste collection. Do you have the facility to dispose of your spent batteries safely where you live?
Local supermarket does a collection ... or I take them into work.

19. National Lash Day - have you ever worn false eyelashes or are yours long enough already?
Don't wear make-up, other than an occasional eye-liner. My eyelashes are very wispy, but I have eczema on my eyelids ... have done sine I was 14. But as I don't wear make-up it's not really a problem

20. International Mother Language Day: What is the mother language of your home?
English

Right let's get this posted
debris4spike: (Default)
This morning I did a short walk, collected my prescription ... and picked up a bottle of milk.

Then, once home, made some lemon biscuits ... I bought lemons for the pancakes yesterday, so it was nice to make the biscuits. Tomorrow I am spending most of the day with Claire, while Tim is at work, so there will be fresh biscuits for him as a treat.

So, as you can see, that even though it's another grey day, there are some beautiful spring colours around -

14th February (2)

14th February (1)

14th February (3)

And, so I am up to date, and as I said I am out for a lot of tomorrow -

14. International Book giving day - do you like giving books as gifts? When was the last time you did that?
Downstairs I have Christine's birthday pressies all wrapped and ready to give to her next week - and there are 2 books in the bag! One of which is about the late Queem, and the other is a guide book of Scotland ... a country she hopes to visit next year.

15. National Flag of Canada Day - are you any good at vexillology (the study of flags) - or do you struggle to identify different flags?
Yes, I recognise Canada's ... and ours. USA is OK, and so are Switzerland & Malta .... but so many European flags are 3 stripes of colours, and I get confused. Africa & South America are certainly a no-go for my flag recognition.

Right, that's me sorted x

10 Years On

Monday, February 12th, 2024 12:10 pm
debris4spike: (Default)
10 years ago, about now, Claire was having a mastectomy.

Fortunately she didn't need any chemo or radiotherapy ... so we always focus on the fact that she is now 10 years cancer free ... and that is something to celebrate.

I am trying to get caught up with things today ... have already done some housework and had a walk ... now here for a short time, before lunch, then back again this afternoon.

Lets get the photos caught up -

Yesterday I didn't really do much, although Tim & Claire popped in on their way home from their walk.  However when I went to my freezer in my shed, I saw that a couple of my small rose bushes are already well and truly in "Spring" mode -
11th February

Today I had a lovely 2 mile walk.

The hospital I work at, is actually on "Barrack Rd", and yes the barracks still exist -
12th February (2)

12th February (3)

As I walked up the road I spotted this little-one "working" very hard -
12th February (1)

And Spring is certainly around ... including in this frist picture a bee
12th February (5)

12th February (4)

12th February (6)

And, this is the other end of the park that I shared photos of last week -
12th February (7)

I also spotted this tree ... the prompt for last week on [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger was "bother" ... I think the kids who kicked those footballs up into the tree will have a bother if they want to retrieve them
DSC_0685

Right, that's me up to date ... so let's do todays question -

Today Charles Darwin was born in 1809 and across the world his birth is celebrated. Have you a Natural History Museum nearby you can visit?
I have been to the Natural History Museum in London ... and the building itself is stunning.
Our local museum has a couple of Natural History sections ... one of which I can't really go in as I am really arachnaphobic!!!!

Right, I will try and catch up with you all, after lunch x
debris4spike: (Default)
Another day off ... another grey day.

I had planned to meet up with my friend from work who is on long-term sick leave with depression ... poor girl can't get a break though as they have just found out that her husband has cancer. He is seeing the oncologist today.

I had a couple of hymn sheets from the funeral to post so I walked the long way round, and in the midst of the grey weather I was happy to see a touch of colour
31st January (2)

31st January (1)

The district I was walking through is called Heavitree ... thus named as it was where one of the city gibbets was. This is one of the oddest monuments in the area ... and as you can see here, in Exeter Memories I am not the only one to think that way.
31st January (3)
With a close-up of the poem ... and "good luck" even with photo enhancement this is as good as it gets!
31st January (4)a

As I turned to head home I saw this property, which has always fascinated me. Having seen it for 25+ years (as it's near Tim's place, it never seems to have changed in that time ... even the heights of the trees.
31st January (5)

Right, let's see if I can get another Snowflae entry done today ... but I need to get the final question of the month done -

When was the last time you looked at some art?
When I was in London in November ... I went to the National Portrait Gallery, among other places.
I also look at [livejournal.com profile] petrusplancius posts ... really lovely art work

Let''s get on x

Win-Win Morning

Friday, March 10th, 2023 11:20 am
debris4spike: (Default)
I walked into work this morning only to find that the clinic had been cancelled a couple of weeks ago and no one had told me.  So, I put my coat back on and headed home ... lucky I am only about 10 mins walk away!  As I was leaving I was assured that I would get paid for the shift anyway ... WIN # 1

So, as it was dry I decided that I would have a walk ... not a fast "exercise walk, but I was out & about for about 1/2 hour ... complete with camera.  So I managed a photo-friday with the signs of Spring around.  Lucky that we didn't get any snow after all ... WIN # 2

So, here's the proof -

So, as you can see lots of colour, if you keep your eyes open.

Right, I need to get on and not waste the day completely.  So, before I post this -

10 – Middle Name Pride Day: not everyone has one, do you? Is there a story behind your middle name or why you don’t have one?
Jacqueline ... Dad was John James ... so that's where the name comes from.  Mum & Dad never wanted to name any child John ( even though that had been the tradition for centuries).  But, Dad, Dad's father, Dad's maternal uncle, and both of Dad's grandfather's were John ... so it got conplicated.
Mum & Dad did aim to give me 2 middle names - Jacqueline Victoria (as both my grandmother's had that as their middle name), but decided that 36 letters was just too long

Right, let's see what you are all up to x
debris4spike: (Default)
As I said earlier, I went to Coleton Fishacre, yesterday, and enjoyed my spring visit to the 1920's ....

Yes, I know when I posted on Monday I said I would come back and catch up with you all in the later afternoon.  However mid afternoon I was aked if I could work that evening.  As I said I hadn't got many shifts ahead of me, so decided to go in.  As it turned out, when I logged on, I had an email booking me for some more shifts over the next couple of weeks.  Not as many as before, but still good tosee.  When I had been there about an hour the "boss" left and spoke to me, saying that one of the staff was leaving, as we expected, so I will have some more shifts coming up again while she is between staff ... so a really positive evning ... even if I didn;t get a chance to catch up with you all.  Sadly LiveJournal is one of the few sites that won't load on the work pcs.

I had a great day yesterday - cooler than we expected it to be, but it was dry.  Not as many Spring flowers as I had hoped, but as you can see, we still managed to see quite a few.  Coleton Fishacre is a lovely house, designed and built in the 1920's by Rupert D'Oyly Carte. It is a really comfortable place, and one I could easily move into. The other thing I like is that it is "set" as if they had just had to rush out of the house on an errand. Well worth a visit if you are this way. I just need to sort the photos out and then I shall post them.

But before I do that -

22 – World Yoga Day: Do you do yoga? How do you benefit from it?

Don't do it

23 – Digital Learning Day: What are the benefits of digital learning compared to other methods of learning? What are the disadvantages?
It's available for anyone ... however I am "old school" and prefer a teacher, and a pen & paper.

Right I must get on - I am actually working again this evening, and want to get the photos posted, and hopefully everything caught up before I head out. However, if not, it will be Friday as tomorrow Christine is coming into Exeter for the second half of her birthday ... and there will be more photos to post!
debris4spike: (Default)
Yes, Friday got away from me and then on Saturday I met up with Toni, Pete and Toni's dad and step-mum. We had a lovely morning - a short walk, "coffee & cake" and great to catch up, and to celebrate her birthday. She had found it tough to have Derek & Janet staying, as she had been 101% Covid-scared, and then Pete was diagnosed with cancer and things got even worse for her. But as you can see, She actually gave me a hug - so good to see her slowly relaxing, although I don't know that she will ever fully accept the virus situation. Pete is doing well - he isn't now due back for another 3 months, so that is a positive sign.

As you can see Spring is on the way ... although as it's gone a bit icy again I do wonder how much that will survive.

As I said, I also brought icons - these are for round 164 your_favourites, over at DW, with the theme of "plays". One of my favourite plays (despite having to actually study it at school!), is The Importance of Being Ernest by Oscar Wikde ... and my favourite version of the play is the 1952 version -

1 2 3 4

As ever, they are snaggable.

I worked this morning at the Reception desk, and it was fairly quiet as the clinic numbers were halved due to the strikes. As of next week there is someone starting a permenant contract, so many of my shifts will go ... not as fun for planning more holidays, but better for my brain!

In a moment I have an appointment with my Sports Masseur for my leg injury, but before I go -

3 – Take a Cruise Day: Have you ever been on a cruise? If not, would you want to? Cruise ships cause major environmental damage: a large cruise ship can have a carbon footprint greater than 12,000 cars, while passengers on an Antarctic cruise can produce as much CO2 emissions on a seven-day voyage as the average European in an entire year. The industry is a major producer of waste, with the total amount of rubbish produced by a large cruise ship exceeding a ton per day. And let us not forget that they are also essentially floating germ/virus labs (even before Covid). So do you still want to take a cruise?
I have never fancied one as I am not a "party" person, so can't see why I should pay for something I would not want to do.

4 – Ice cream For Breakfast Day: Have you ever eaten ice cream for breakfast (or for any other meal)?
I never have - but ... why not?!!!

5 – World Nutella Day: Do you like Nutella? How often to you eat Nutella?
No thanks

Right, let's get on. I will try to catch up with you later x

Monday Again

How do the days go past so rapidly?

Anyway I come bearing photos ... I told you that last week Tim, Claire and I celebrated Mum & Dad's 70th Anniversary ... and yes, it was lovely, and we have photos to show for it.

22nd_March_(1)

22nd_March_(2)

22nd_March_(3)

Yesterday at Church there were more empty seats than normal ... I think that not everyone decided to set their alarm clocks, as we were up an hour earlier than the previous day.  As there are 2 services at our Church it meant they could go to the later service.  We were all given a small posy of flowers to celebrate Mothering Sunday, so that is nice to have the daffs on my coffee table ... they are such a bright & cheery flower, aren't they?

Today the clinic went well.  I suppose it helped that the twit girl I am training is off this week, and we had a no-show.  So in the end I was home slightly early.  One of the patients spoke very little  English and yes, we managed to get the tests done correctly, but we did point out to him that when he saw the consultant it would be good to have an interpreter.  I really am not complaining as I have enough problems with English ... and it's my only language!

Now I am here, catching up ... and will try and catch up with your past posts and comments, however need to get to the shops before I fully settle down.  But, as ever, a catch-up -

28. When dining out, have you ever complained about a meal, or sent your order back to the kitchen?
No
Although a couple of times I have left literally a penny as a tip as the service was so bad.

Right, I must get to the shops then catch up with you all a bit later.
debris4spike: (Default)
... I just hope we don't get the cold weather that ha been promised! However it is only January. so I wouldn't be suprised if winter returned. However on my morning walk (I am off today as my colleague is still away ... in fact we heard from him yesterday that his flight for tommorrow has been cancelled and he will be away for another 3 weeks)

Anyway, I did spot this bright spots of colour, so thought I would share with you -

So now I neeed to get on with some other bits & pieces ... the week is dissappearing fast!

But, before I go -

26. If you opened a business, what kind of business would it be?
Been there, done that! I was an osteopath, with my own business, for 28 years .... however the business side was the worst part of the job!
