Got Squished!

We have a mammogram every 3 years, if we want it ... although not everyone goes through with it. Having Mum, Dad's sister. Mum's Aunt & Cousin ... and also Claire having had breast cancer it is something I think important. So, hopefully that means I shall be OK for another 3 years ... but if not, at least treatments are available. They say the results will be ready within the next couple of weeks.

I also had a nice walk this morning ... we actually have "summer" today ... and knowing English weather I wanted to make the most of it!

My afternoon seems to be running away, and yet I don't seem to have done much ... although been chatting to an on-line friend, which has made the time fly.

I really ought to get on and at least think about doing something constructive. ... So ...

19. It's the lead guitarist of Queen - Brian May's birthday (1947) today. Do you ever sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody if you hear it playing (Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango)?

I think most people sing along with bits of it … although I wonder if anyone can do it all the way through!

Right, let's get this posted.

Hope to catch up with you soon x

I had a great day in the end, yesterday.

I jad walked to the shops earlier (and caught the bus home) .... In fact I had door-to-door service, as my nearest bus-stop is on a corner, and not nice for the buses to stop at.  The driver asked me whether I wanted to stop before or after, the stop.  I asked for before, and he pulled in literally in front of my house ... door to door!!

I had just packed the shopping away when my door rang ... it was a local counciller canvassing for the elections in May.  He gave me a leaflet which he asked me to read (as his first question was would I be voting for this candidate, to which I had said no) ... so I said I would.  The leaflet ended up just having the name and addresses of the candidate and the secretarial team ... I had expected a promotional flier as to how amazing both Exeter & England would be if I voted that way.  So in the end, it was just a waste of paper!

I then tried logging onto my computer, to get a phone call from Claire asking me to meet her for champagne, to celebrate her 10th anniversary of returning home from her mastectomy ... we met at The Ivy (so it was an expensive afternoon) ... but very nice ... here I am, and you just have to see the loos ...

When we left it was to then walk to a pub to meet Tim from work, so we could have a meal, before walking home.  I had suggested it, even though I had dinner at their's yesterday after our day trip, but Tim has had a super tough week, so said it would be nice to start his weekend off on a positive note.

Now it's today ... I have had a short walk as I needed to post a letter, and want to do some exercise (even though it was only about a mile), but still spotted some more signs of Spring -

Now I am here sorting things out, and will try and catch up with you all in a moment.  So, before I post this let me catch up ... it will be 3 days, as on Monday I meeting up with Christine to celebrate her birthday -

18. National Battery Day. In England, we are not permitted to dispose of spent batteries in the general waste collection. Do you have the facility to dispose of your spent batteries safely where you live?
Local supermarket does a collection ... or I take them into work.

19. National Lash Day - have you ever worn false eyelashes or are yours long enough already?
Don't wear make-up, other than an occasional eye-liner. My eyelashes are very wispy, but I have eczema on my eyelids ... have done sine I was 14. But as I don't wear make-up it's not really a problem

20. International Mother Language Day: What is the mother language of your home?
English

Right let's get this posted
debris4spike: (Default)
I was due to spend time this afternoon catching up and posting photos of my great day out yesterday.

However at lunch I had a call from Claire to say that it would be nice if we met this afternoon for a glass of champagne to celebrate that today is the 10 year anniversay of the day she rerurned home after her mastectomy ... and who am I to turn down champagne!

Anyway lets' briefly catch up ...

This is where I went yesterday - (more to follow tomorrow)
15th February

This morning they put up scaffolding opposite -
16th February (1)

16th February (2)

Right, proper post tomorrow, but until then -

Tomorrow is the third Saturday in February and it's National Red Socks Day - will you be wearing red socks?
Ironically the answer is no … for the simple reason I only have one pair that are plain red, and I had them on earlier today!!

Right, see you tomorrow x

10 Years On

10 years ago, about now, Claire was having a mastectomy.

Fortunately she didn't need any chemo or radiotherapy ... so we always focus on the fact that she is now 10 years cancer free ... and that is something to celebrate.

I am trying to get caught up with things today ... have already done some housework and had a walk ... now here for a short time, before lunch, then back again this afternoon.

Lets get the photos caught up -

Yesterday I didn't really do much, although Tim & Claire popped in on their way home from their walk.  However when I went to my freezer in my shed, I saw that a couple of my small rose bushes are already well and truly in "Spring" mode -
11th February

Today I had a lovely 2 mile walk.

The hospital I work at, is actually on "Barrack Rd", and yes the barracks still exist -
12th February (2)

12th February (3)

As I walked up the road I spotted this little-one "working" very hard -

And Spring is certainly around ... including in this frist picture a bee

And, this is the other end of the park that I shared photos of last week -

I also spotted this tree ... the prompt for last week on [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger was "bother" ... I think the kids who kicked those footballs up into the tree will have a bother if they want to retrieve them

Right, that's me up to date ... so let's do todays question -

Today Charles Darwin was born in 1809 and across the world his birth is celebrated. Have you a Natural History Museum nearby you can visit?
I have been to the Natural History Museum in London ... and the building itself is stunning.
Our local museum has a couple of Natural History sections ... one of which I can't really go in as I am really arachnaphobic!!!!

Right, I will try and catch up with you all, after lunch x

Had a great time with Tim & Claire yesterday evening. We have always got on so well, and it's fun to spend time together.

This morning I walked to the supermarket a couple of miles away, did some shopping (and wow, was it busy today ... seeing as I am often there at the same time, don't know what was special about today). As ever, I caught the bus back, and have had dinner.

Just had a text from T&C to say that Claire has completed her 60 mile run for Cancer Research. I am so proud of her for doing it. It was 9 1/2 years ago that she had her mastectomy, and felt she wanted to do something before her 10 year anniversary. Well Done Claire.

I have managed to get a few bit's done, as well.  Such as ordering holiday money for 10 days time, getting my prescription ordered etc ... things that are essential, and actually always seem to take longer than you expect.

Now I am going to have a fairly lazy afternoon, although I still have to do some of my holiday journal from Belfast., but before that

30 – International Podcast Day: Are you a podcast fan? What are some of your favourites? How do you find out about new podcasts that might interest you?
Sorry, don’t do Podcasts.

1 – International Day of Older Persons: David Bowie once said that ageing is an extraordinary process whereby you become the person you always should have been. Do you agree?
Hard to say. We all learn every day, just wish I could remember all those years of “lessons”.
In some ways I don’t mind aging, although I could do without the muscle aches & pains.

Right, see you Monday x

BUsy, Busy, Busy

Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 03:55 pm
debris4spike: (Default)
Well life is busy, so I am not popping in as much this week as I would normally. However as much of that is through work it does mean I can pay the bills easier at the moment.

This weekend I did pop in briefly at Tim & Claire's although only saw Tim (who was busy baking). Claire had at long last had her implant replaced. When she had her mastectomy some years ago her implant had gone well, well about 18 months ago the "sling" it was attached to had twisted very slightly. Then with her age, going through menopause, her shape is changing slightly, so all in all surgery was needed a bit before it's 10 year replacement date. She did well, and was back home the same day, so all in all good news for her.

I have some more icons to make this month - and yes, I still haven't posted any photos from Istanbul, so will do that at some point, but don't know if I will manage it this week.

So although busy, no real news from me, so will catch up -

14. If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich?

I ahve always liked my jobs ... but maybe being a travel guide on a changing tour (so getting paid to sight-see!)

15. What was your excuse the last time you arrived late to something?
That is so rare ... but was almost late for a trip to Bristol with Claire ... and genuinely forgot how long it would take to walk to the station ... add that to a cold head wind, and there are great & real excuses.

16. In what way is your life lately imbalanced?
More work, less play, now I am feeling better

17. Do you put your socks on before or after putting on trousers?
Either

18. Now that self/indie publishing has become easier, have books gotten better or worse?
A bit of both.
There's more junk than ever out there ... but maybe there are a few items out there that would not have been published, but are worth a read.

Right - I must get on

Will try & catch up with you later x

Yesterday when I got in from work it was to a letter in an unknown hand.  When Mum died I took over contact with her mother's (my grandmother's) cousin.  She used to send her a Bible quarterly magazine, and I continued with that.  Last year she celebrated her 101th birthday ... and according to the letter one of her children sent, Thursday (a couple of weeks ago) she wasn't very well, and passed away overnight.  So in the end I had 3 distant relatives pass away on the same evening ... really odd!

I didn't get on-line yesterday as I wanted to write to them, and then I was out again at the "squish" clinic ... ctually the radiographer was actually quite gentle, so that made that easier.

Was down on Main Reception again today – good shift, and at least the time goes fast as it is busy. Still glad to know that odd people turn up all over the place. One lady got upset with me as I couldn’t tell her where “The Leg” clinic was held! Yes, she was upset that I asked her for name etc so I could find out what part of the hospital she needed to be in … that “legs” weren’t all treated in the same place was apparently very wrong!

Now I am here, and will do tomorrow's question as well because I am doing urology and reception, so will be absolutly shattered when I get in.

7. If you were dictator of your country, what would you do?
Free entry into museums etc!

8. Is there a product or service you love so much that you'd happily be that company's spokesperson?
I think the only thing I have "loyalty" to is Nikeon, as all my cameras have been that brand ... so yes please, and that way I get the latest model"

9. Why did you decide to do the work you are doing now (or if you're retired, the work you were doing prior to retirement)?
I love working with the general public ... and to helping them in some way

Hope you are all well - I will try to catch up with you later.
debris4spike: (Default)
Today I was meeting Claire (& Tim) for lunch - to celebrate her being cancer-free for another year. This coming Saturday it will be 8 years ago that Claire had her mastectomy, and was told 2 weeks later that she wouldn't need chemo/radio-therapy. So I have always made it a point of now calling it a day of celebration that she is cancer free for another year.

I was going to do some housework this mon=rning then changed my mind and walked into the city early ... there is an exhibition at Exeter Cathedral I wanted to see (photos later), and when I had seen that I walked first to The Guildhall, who told me that Tuckers Hall was open (it's only open once or twice a week), and on my way up to meet T& C I went into a Church that I hadn't been into bfore ... So much fun, and, yes, photos to share.

History is that os -
The Cathedral - finished 1400
Guildhall - rebuilt 1470
Tuckers Hall - built 1470
St Olaves Church - Rebuilt 1370's

So, what a fun morning.

Then lunch with Tim & Claire before heading back here, to look at the photos ... and to share.  But, before I do that

10. What do you think is the bes sitcom (current or past)?
Dad's Army takes some beating - The Home Guard durinng WWII, for those who don't know it

Photos soon
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
As of lunchtime yesterday she has been cancer free for 6 years. I have always focussed on that fact, not that she had a mastectomy 6 years ago. As she didn't need chemo, or radio, then this is the day of being clear.

I had lunch with her (and Tim) and we shared a bottle of wine between the 2 girls, and talked and laughed. Then we had afternoon tea! A lovely day, and one when she was able to open up about future surgery, and their work situations. So after all the stresses I have had with them over the last couple of years it made the time that much more special.

And so I can catch up the last couple of days -

12 Would you rather be locked overnight in a library, a museum, or a zoo?
101% in a museum .... I love museums, and there is never enough time to see everything (and if the coffee shop stays open, then it is truly a winning night)

13 What are your top three long-range goals?
a) Be able to do my long distance, and expensive trips ... I would love to see The Pyramids, The Holy Land & Jordan, China, Japan, South & Central America ... as well as go back to USA & Canada
b) To be able to get my spare room organised - it is still a muddle 4 years after we sold Mum & Dad's house
c) To actually get all the hancraft projects done ... you know, those ones I have started, or just have bought but not even started
WOW - with this list I will need to live to be 100 (and marry a millionaire to finance it!)

I Have Been Squished

Thursday, April 4th, 2019 05:42 pm
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Hopefully that will be me done for another 3 years.

I may moan, some of the time, about being a larger size, but at least the squishing is not too bad this way.

With breast cancer on both sides of my family (and in my sister-in-law), this is certainly one apt I would not want to miss.

What A Day

Friday, August 26th, 2016 03:37 pm
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Dad is still with us, but drifting slowly towards Heaven.  Very little response today, but still an occasional smile.  He told me a few days ago he was chatting to mum.  So great to see his mind full of happy memories at this time.

I spoke to my best friend today ... only to find out she had a breast biopsy yesterday, and din't tell me so as not to upset me.

However maybe it is good for us both to have the other one to worry about.

Yes, I owe replies - but my brain can't focus when I am with Dad as I am now.  Thank you for your love and support - it truly means more than I can say.
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Mum had another breast cancer check up today .... and was told that the lump is continuing to reduce in both size and texture.

So great news.

Also, last month Claire had a mammogram on her remaining breast, and all is OK. She is now a year cancer free.

So, good news, all round.
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Still happy over the news that we had on Friday that Mum's breast cancer lump is continuing to reduce ... and is actually now a less solid feel to it, compared to how it was according to her consultant.
debris4spike: (Breast Cancer)
Further to Claire's great news of yesterday, I spoke to her today.  She was sounding so happy and positive that it really cheered me up.

She is thinking of speaking to the breast care nurses to offer her services as a help in supporting other breast cancer patients .... which also shows how much she has really changed in the last 9 months.  She is positive about life, and wanting to be there for others who are ill.  She always was pretty upbeat, but like many didn't want to face serious illness ... now she has faced it and come through she wants to show others that it can be done.

Her happiness made me happy.

I was sent this email today - and I have just done it ... It did take less than one minute!

Charity that takes little effort...
I have a favour to ask, it only takes a minute and it can save a life.

Please tell your friends today!  The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site to meet their quoat of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman.

It takes less than one minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).  This
doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.
