Well it never warmed up yesterday ... or brightened up.  And today looks like it's going to be a similar day.

I did end up having a short walk in the end, thoughm,, as my boss called me in, as I am going to be working full time for a short time starting next month.  Ali, who works afternoons/evenings is taking a year out.  She has become guardian for her cousin's daughter's child (the 15year old was date-raped, but didn't want an abortion).  The process has been going on for many months now ... but it's all coming together rapidly.  So until things get settled, or confirmed, I shall be covering her shifts, as well as the ones I already had booked.  As it's only for a shortish time I am looking forward to the pressure.  So I walked a slightly longer way round toget home.

A bit later today I shall go out as I want to pick up a few things from the supermarket, and again will walk the long way round to get there ... killing two birds with one stone!

Yesterday I did make some icons, as you can see.  They are for your_favourites, with a Valentine'd theme.  So we could pick 4 things we love.  I thought a more open theme would be easier, but it wasn't!!

So ....
I love classical music, especially by Beethoven, so this is the opening of his 5th symphony.
Cary Grant is a great actor, and I love most of his films. This comes from "Arsenic & Old Lace", which if you haven't seen, is a must.
What's not to like about the old Hollywood musicals? And Fred Astaire was a dancer beyond anyone else, wasn't he?
Then, look at my username ... yes, Spike is a great character, and despite his flaws, I still love him.

1.  1 2.  2 3.  3 4.  4

I have a few more sets I am working on, as well.  Sometimes I get frustrated, as I said in my colourblindness post, but basically am glad to be stretched, as that is often the only way to learn.

Well, I still have the ironing from yesterday to do ... and the shopping to get, so had better get on.  As ever, thanking [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee for the questions -

18. Enzo Ferrari was born on this day in 1898. Have you ever driven or ridden in a Ferrari sports car?
No ... but if someone offers, I wouldn't say no!

Let's catch up with you all, now x

Just Catching Up

Work went well over the last couple of days, although yesterday it was very, very cold - ended up almost putting my coat on, but was a good girl and didn't. Still the shifts went well ... and mostly some very nice, very sane people. However there were certainly a few odd questions around that I had to keep smiling while I tried to appear relaxed!

I also started a project that I have been meaning to do for ages. [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee reminded me when I made a comment earlier in the week about my worry about losing Mum & Dad's wedding photos (etc) if there was a fire, like those in LA. So, here we go - 22/03/1952 -

DSC_1908

DSC_1909

DSC_1910

I also made a few icons. These 4 are for a competition with a theme of "More Than 1 Film" and there are 2 icons from each of 2 films. Lethal Weapon 2, and the second Downton Abbey Film -

1 . 4 . 3 . 2

I am also working on a few for some of the other communities I icon for.

Now I have today off - well I have cleaning to do, and ironing (I did washing earlier in the week). I need to go and get some groceries, as well. So a bits & pieces day!

I want to catch up on comments, as well, but before that -

16. How often do you eat out at restaurants or cafés?
Very, very rarely

17. In Somerset (England), it is traditional on this day to enter the orchards and toast the trees with cider to encourage a fruitful season. Have you ever had alcoholic Somerset cider or Scrumpy?
I do like traditional cider ... but not a fan of the new "ciders" made from fruit other than apples.

18. Cary Grant was born today in 1904 (in Bristol England). Have you a favourite Cary Grant film?
That's a very hard question as I love a lot of his films ... Some of my favourites are -
The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss
Bringing Up Baby
Holiday
His Girl Friday
Mr Lucky
Arsenic and Old Lace
The Bishop's Wife
People Will Talk
To Cath A Thief
Operation Petticoat
The Grass Is Greener
Charade
See - that's just my favourites ... there are a few I haven't listed that I also love, but these are among the watch & watch again films.

Right, let me get on x

Happy 90th

debris4spike: (Mum)
90 years ago Mum arrived at this village, and to the day Jiffy and I were there.

Mum so wanted to live longer than her mother, who died on her 90th birthday, but was only 87.  So Jiffy and I are here for a couple of days, as we are hoping to visit Auntie Mary tomorrow.  We spent some time in the village, went into the Church (where Mum was christened), then to Grandma & Granddad's graves; then to Raunds, where Granddad was born, and again to the Church (which is under major repaires as the East wall was falling off!!)

Sadly, although I have my camera, I forgot the pc cable .. so other photos will have to wait.

 photo Untitled_zpsxfnticsy.jpg

We then went to Stanwick Lakes, where I bought a snack lunch and then had a good walk. This place "didn't exist" when Mum knew the village ... but some of the water was used for a local mill, where Mum also learnt to swim.

And so back to our hotel mid-afternoon. Poor Jiffy is exhausted, which is nice to see!!! I am also being a good girl, and not over-doing things.

Also, must catch up on the February Meme -

February 14 - Who do you love?

Well, I have to say Jiffy ... we are sharing a holiday together, after all.

February 15 - Who was your first celebrity crush?

I can't remember the order, as 2 were close together ... and I still like them both.

Cary Grant -

Way back some weeks ago I asked a couple of friends to challenge me in the 5 Question Meme that they did ... and I haven't got round to answering them.

So the first set were from [livejournal.com profile] kudagirl .... and she asked me -

1. We both love James, but what other actor living or dead would you love to sit and talk to over a good cuppa?

2. If you had not worked in the medical or music field, what other career would you have enjoyed?

3. I know you have travel quite a bit over the years, what area would you love to visit given the time and money?

4. If you could have lived in another era, would it be the past or the future and why?

5. How do you think your life would be different if you had been born male instead of female?

If you want to see what I ramble about ...Expandclickety click )

Well, there we are ... ramble over!

BTW, I am back on antibiotics for the tooth and have to go back to my dentist. The GP I saw was stunned at the size of the hole still ... 11 days, and counting, since the extraction! ... Watch this space ("groan")

5 Question Meme

debris4spike: (Eternal Refuge gif + my name)
I went to my friend Pete's funeral today - it was "lovely" to see the Church full, and to meet up with friends form orchestra.  I left Bude 18months ago and will admit that it is one thing I still miss.  I haven't found anywhere still to play and just wish I was a bit nearer, or at least that petrol was free on Mondays, then I would go back.  Pete had died travelling in Peru, a place he loved, so the practical logistics were a nightmare, but for him his last few days were in doing the things he loved.

I am meant to be sorting out why dad's printer has stopped printing, but it is now telling me that he doesn't have a printer, so before throwing something at the computer I thought I would answer one of my set of 5 questions.  I challenged a couple of my closer friends to ask things they didn't know - and both managed to find 5 questions to ask.

[livejournal.com profile] jaded_jamie asked:-

1: Second favourite actor or singer do you admire most?

2: Is there a TV show you would wipe from history completely?

3: You could be ANY person alive today for a day, who?

4: Relating to question 3, why?

5: Why are you a Royalist?

ExpandAnd here are my answers )

If anyone wants me to ask them 5 questions then all you have to do is ask.

100 Meme - Film # 30

Certainly not a politically correct film, Once Upon a Honeymoon shows the rise of Nazi power before the war.

At the start of WWII, Katie O'Hara (Ginger Rogers), an American burlesque girl intent on social climbing, marries Austrian Baron Von Luber. Pat O'Toole (Cary Grant), an American radio reporter, sees this as a chance to investigate Von Luber, who is suspected of having Nazi ties. As country after country falls to the Nazis, O'Tool follows O'Hara across Europe. At first he is after a story, but he gradually falls in love with her. When she learns that her husband is indeed a Nazi, O'Hara fakes her death and runs off with O'Toole. In Paris, she is recruited to spy for the allies; he uses a radio broadcast to make Von Luber and the Nazis look like fools.

So loosely based on history, but still with a great selection of comedy. In this clip he fills her in on her husband's plans.

........... Ends (well what other word did you expect!!)

Just a fly-past update as there is not much to say, but feel I have neglected my scribble again ... sorry folks, skip, or suffer!

          #  Went to Bible Study last night - I find it fascinating to both study more of God's Word, but also to learn something of Filipino heritage.  I was learning that traditionally spaghetti is served at a birthday party, and the birthday girl/guy must not cut or bite the long strands, but suck it up ... otherwise their life is cut short.  Great to learn of other superstitians etc.

          #  Sadly, also heard from one of the girls (who is 39 weeks pregnant) that her cousin died in child-birth last week (along with the child) ... seems sad to think this still happens in the 21st century.

          #  Was doing some more icons and found that my main BtVS source had been taken down.  I contacted the "owner" of the site, who looked into it and was told no-one used them, so they had been removed.  So either I am a nobody ... or just need to drool over.... ummmm study Spike more.

          #  Had a weird dream (twice) last night - I was being given a tattoo on my left hip ... and told it would disappear in 2 years, as I wouldn't need it then.  Still tatt free, and no thoughts or plans - where does my subconsciou go?

          #   Mum sees the eye specialist again today to know, finally, whether he will be able to return any of her sight to her.  It has been a  long 18 months.

          #  Well 30 day photo meme is up, now I have to decide on a Cary Grant film.  I am enjoying watching and thinking about this set.  I love him as an actor ... so it has made the choice hard to decide on just 10 ... maybe some of the missing films will end up in another section later.

Well, that's me - must get on and then hopefully will have time for a walk before ironing and then work.  Hope you are all having a fun day.

Cary Grant in a swim suit, then scared by the driving of Grace Kelly (which sadly came true in later years) ... what film can I be talking of other than To Catch A Thief

It is worth watching to see the scenery alone ... but add the costumes and a strong story then this film is a true winner. Cary Grant (in case you don't know) plays a reformed jewel thief who is suspected of returning to his former occupation, and must ferret out the real thief in order to prove his innocence.

Mr Lucky is another Cary Grant film that is more unusual, but one I love. He plays a gambler who plans to swindle money from a charity program, but starts to have second thoughts when he falls for a rich society girl.

Watching him learn to knit is a scene that has to be seen -

Yet another brilliant Cary Grant film is Bachelor Knight

Teenaged Susan Turner, with a severe crush on playboy artist Richard Nugent, sneaks into his apartment to model for him and is found there by her sister Judge Margaret Turner. Threatened with jail, Nugent agrees to date Susan until the crush abates. He counters Susan's comic false sophistication by even more comic put-on teenage mannerisms, with a slapstick climax.

Cary Grant is the playboy, Shirley Temple the teenager, and Myrna Loy as her sister. Great film, cast ... and supporting cast.

As you know I am a Cary Grant fan - well, not surising when in The Bishops Wife he plays an Angel who visits a Bishop (David Niven) just before Christmas. The Bishop had been trying to get a new cathedral built and prays for guidance. Cary Grant arrives, but his guidance isn't about fundraising.
