Yes, 45 years ago I was baprised by my Dad at the Old Chapel in Upminster.  I do remember a lot about the day, a special time of confirming my faith.  As Dad was taking the service I was able to chose 3 of the 4 hymns (Dad chose the first), and they were -
O Come all Ye Faithful
O Jesus, I have Promised, to serve Thee to the end Both Mum & Dad also had this hymn
Hark The Herals Angels Sing Still my favourite Carol
O the Bitter Shame & Sorrow

The Chapel is no longer a Chapel, but has been renovated as an Event's Centre -

This is the view if I was standing where the baptistry was and looking towards the door

So, can't believe that was 45 years ago!!!  Where did those days go

Andrew's Baptism

I said last week that last Sunday we were going to Andrew's baptism - and I haven't got round to reporting back!

It was a long day - but truly special.

ExpandA long ramble about the service )

After theis we went back to Nick and Brenda's for more chat ... and more food, if we wanted ... and Andrew had his picture taken with each part of our side of the family.  Brenda's family didn't want to bother, sor some unusual reason.  Oh well, Andrew only had to suffer for a short time, didn't he.

Here he is with his Auntie Deborah -

We left about 4.30 (with sandwiches for our tea) and headed home, picking up Jiffy en route.

All in all a lovely day - and I was so pleased to be there, and to see all the family (on our side) celebrating with him - I hope he remembers his day, as I do mine, for the rest of his life.

debris4spike: (Amen!)

Having just typed about my baptism I decided to Google - and thought I would share these very sad photos.

They have brought back the memories - but are sad to see that the money has never been raised.  The trouble is that there is a natural spring under the building, so repair is evry expensive. It was originally built in 1800, with a new front being added in 1847

Anyway - here are the remains -

The baptistry is in the floor in front of the pulpit -

The upper gallery was already closed as dangerous when we were members there -

debris4spike: (Christmas - Jesus is the reason)

I had planned to post this greeting on the 25th, but I was going to scribble something about todays date ... so am combining the 2 into one post.

I hope that you all had a really special Christmas (holiday) time - able to spend it with family and friends... enjoying some quality time with them.  And for those who felt able to, as I did, to wish Jesus a Very Happy Birthday.

God gave his greatest gift to us, when He sent us His only son as a baby at Christmas.

Thank God for Christmas!

Although I was unable to type that on the 25th it is great I am able to type it today, as in 1975 today was a very special day for me - my baptism.

I was baptised by immersion, by Dad, at the Old Chapel, Upminster ..... for me it was confirmation of my faith in God and my belief in the birth, death and resurrection of His son (the baby in the picture), Jesus.  For me it is a personal relationship - and my baptism symbolised that.  It didn't give me any special privaledge ... just an afternoon when I could share my decision with my family and friends.

As it was Dad taking the service, I was allowed to choose the 4 hymns, and I decided on -

Oh Come All Ye Faithful - A well known and popular carol
Oh Jesus I have Promised To Serve Thee To The End - A hynmn of dedication that all the family had at their services.
Hark The Herald Angels Sing - My favorite carol
Oh The Bitter Shame And Sorrow - A lesser known hymn, but one about dedication and service.

A very special evening that I still am pleased to remember.
