The Fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason & plot. Than that's all I know of the poem, which was written in about 1870. and is here -

For those who are not English, Guy Fawkes is also the only man who got into Parliament for a clear reason!! Even if it was only to blow the place up ... 1605, was the year and 420 years later there are still multiple Faireworks parties, as we remember Guy Fawkes Night

Anyway, to backtrack - yesterday was good. It was slow going round the museum, but nice to see some of the displays, get some lunch, spend time with a friend ... and feel "normal" after a month of just feeling disabled. This morning I walked down to the shop and bought some things ... trouble is having to only buy enough for the backpack ... but again, it is good to feel normal again.

As it turns out, today, I should have been travelling to London for my annual holiday ... so feels wrong to be here! However it gave me the oppertunity to get my set of icons completed ... thy will be posted soon.

So, I need to sort out those, and the photos that I took yesterday, and post them.

So, before I do that -




4. Have you ever received a birthday present that was just perfect for you? What was it?
Quiet a few over the years.
The family know I love jigsaws, and jewellery … and often get those as gifts. One of the last gifts Mum & Dad bought me that was a surprise was for my 50th birthday … a ring, with a sapphire cross on it, and a verse of the Bible in the shank. So, yes, some very special gifts over the years.

5. Monopoly went on sale for the first time on this day in 1935. Have you ever played it?
Both brothers loved the game … so over the years I got to play it quite a lot. I never enjoyed the long-term planning, so a simple game was fun … but not long-term strategies.




Right, I shall sort and post some more in a moment.

It's funny but I am sure it is only a few years ago we were all talking about going into a new millennium, and now we are a quarter of a century in. How did that happen?

Yesterday morning I had an early start as I had to be in work by 8am and although I live nearby, staying up to see in the New Year wasn't my best plan! In actual fact I wasn't impressed with the fireworks anyway. They were amazing - but too many at one time. When I was in USA for the 4th July they let off a couple at a time, and that way you actually got to enjoy the colour - in London there was a row of them all at the same time, with more starting all the time - a block of colour, but you couldn't see individual patterns. Also, last year, they used quite a few drones, which were missing this time. So, a thumbs-down ... sorry! But, still glad I watched it!!!


Today I have actually started to take down my Christmas decorations - I am not usually this early, but working on Saturday, and Sunday is a no-go for housework, so decided to get organised.

However I am aiming to have a walk as well today as the sun is shining.

So, before I post this I must again thank [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee for her hard work in sorting out the meme and ...

Hopefully!

2. Day two of the new year - have you eaten all the goodies you bought for the Christmas/holiday festivities yet?
No ... still chocs and sweets to slowly eat over the coming days/weeks.

I have just looked and Guy Fawlkes Night is Sunday ... so I won't be posting, but for those who don't know about him, read Wikepedia, here. Most of us know the first couple of lines of a poem, and I will admit I hadn't realised it was by John Milton -

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring.

And what should we do with him? Burn him!

I only could quote the first 2 lines easily, and the next 3 when I concentrate.

For many people Guy Fawlkes is remembered as either the only person who went to Parliament for a good reason, and for others he was the only sane person who went to Parliament.  Yes, those of us who are cynical about politics remember that he tried blowing up everyone.

I grew up know a lot about him, and the story, as a couple of the other conspirators lived in Northamptonshire which is the county Mum grew up in, (and we used to visit a lot), for example the son of the gentleman who built the amazing Triangular Lodge

So, that's me up to date with icons ... however, as the month starts again tomorrow I dare say there will be another challenge to do.

Work was good this morning, although the account problems still exist.  It was nice though as I didn't have anyone other than the physiologist I have worked with for 8+ years ... so although busy, it was a nice time.

Now I need to get on, so ...

Yep, played my clarinet for just over 10 minutes.  That doesn't sound long, but I haven't played since our Christmas Carol Service, as I really struggled with sinus infections for weeks after that.  I start rehearsing for this year's Carol Service at the end of the month, but I need to get my mouth toughened up before then ... so will try to practice regularily from now.

I do have photos to share ... a day out with Christine, and a day out with Brenda, as they had different half term holidays which was great.  So I will aim to post some photos before I go to London on Wednesday morning.  (And, yes, I know I haven't posted the Budapest pics either!!)

I took Jiffy for a long walk today ... as I knew he would be having a tough evening hiding from the fireworks.  So it was nice to see him having fun this morning.

However you want to remember the Gunpowder Plot, being English, I am just glad it is not forgotten!

When I was young, we used to have a few fireworks and a bonfire in our back garden ... from the age of 11 - 18 the Sunday School group I was a member of used to organise an event - and my thoughts go there whenever I eat Tomato Soup ... they used to be really fun - excitement, food, friends ... all ina safe atmosphere - finished with singing our favourite choruses round a huge bonfire. The weather was always great, and non of the fireworks miss-fired ... Lovely memories.

I couldn't get to our main event as I saw a patient this evening, but watched about 1/2 of it from my garden ... Under the cut, are a few, not brilliant, pictures.


See some sparkle - )


There are still fireworks going off from time to time - Hopefully everyone will have enjoyed themselves - and had a safe night.
