I've heard of hot cross buns, but never have seen or eaten one. What is the cross part of it made from? It's always interesting to see foods from other countries.
I hadn't realised until Astrid said it that Hot Cross Buns weren't universal - here are the recipe details
Our crosses were made of simple flower and water, which is the most common way, but then the whole bun is glazed in sugared water ... so, whether toasted or not, it is a general sweet flavour.
My husband waits all year for these delicious treats. Do they make them with citron in England? The cross is made with icing that would melt if we toasted them. Yum!

Ours our like bread rolls, maybe a little sweet, with dried fruit in them. The cross is made of frosting and actually isn't very good! Your look more like English muffin dough (crumpet dough would be the closest, I think?) with much less fruit. They look better! I didn't get to the store yesterday; I wonder if there are any left over....
