Yesterday I had a day out as I met up with Brenda ... we went to a National Trust property as we are both members.  We had checked the web page and it said it was fully open ... but it turned out the house was only open for short tours ... 4 rooms, only.  So not what we were planning, but it was still nice to see, and even better to spend some time with Brenda.  As ever I took some photos, but haven't got round to looking at them yet ... but hopefully will share a few with you later.

As it's Monday I need to share my A to Z photo ... Week 4 – Jan 19 D is for DOOR
DSC_2285
Hard to decide which door, seeing as I have loads.  So decided to pick my freezer door on my fridge-freezer, and yes, like all other metal surfaces I have fridge magnets on it .. memories, gifts, places I have visited, etc

I am also sharing last week's prompt on [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger which was CLOCK.
DSC_2284
Sadly this stopped last year and still haven't managed to get it repaired.
However, it is a very special clock.  It was the wedding present of my Great-Grandfather in the 1880's (and was apparently second-hand at the time), and was given to Mum on his death ... and now it's mine.

Today is a day of "catching up" ... so ...

19. How many pairs of socks do you own?
Don’t think I have ever counted! Quiet a few!

20. How do you keep your photographs? As physical copies or virtual copies on a device? Do you sort them into real/virtual albums?
I have photographs on my computer, and therefore on a “cloud”
I have some printed out, and one of the projects I want to do are “holiday” albums/books of my big holidays.

21. Have you ever made pastry from scratch?
Of course! I have never bought pre-prepared pastry.

Will catch up with you all soon x

I enjoy seeing the front of people's fridges!

I have magnets that hold postcards, mostly from LJ friends :P from everywhere. Let's see...I own a LOT of socks...for my athletic shoes of course. Photos are on my phone and actual photographs in albums or in frames :). No, never made pastry from scratch. From what I understand it's very difficult to do.

From what I understand it's very difficult to do.

It really, really isn't. I could make a decent shortcrust by the time I was 11 or 12, and my granddaughter took about 5 minutes a couple of weeks ago to make shortcrust by hand as, she pointed out, it was a lot quicker than walking the 200 yards to the nearest shop to buy ready made.

I think you and I have a different understanding of pastry, friend. I do not consider a shortcrust pastry. I consider pastry the chefs are taught in culinary school...and if you were more sophisticated you would distinguish between what seems to be simple shortcrust and the finer delicacies sold in fine bakeries. And I can assure you...being a PASTRY chef is indeed a very difficult part of culinary artistry. Plus I didn't ask your opinion

Now that's a good idea for 'door'!

That is a very beautiful clock.

And I conclude that Q21 was written by someone rather younger than me - I don't think it was possible to get ready made pastry when I first began cooking in my early teens!

Mum or granny taught me - both cooked for a living.

My cousin Richard and I really enjoyed learning bakery skills from them - but my sister was never at all keen, although in her late 50s, she learnt how to make a very good lemon drizzle cake which is now her go-to whenever something home-made is required :)

Just writing this has made me smile - Richard is 5 years older than me and together we made and decorated our grandparents Golden Wedding Anniversary cake. I remember that he was a dab hand with the royal icing. I was 11 and, at 16, he spent his days as farm labourer! I wish we had a photo of it.

Oh dear - I seem to have annoyed deepseasiren!

I would have said something nice in reply but they have also blocked me!
