Daily Bible Reading

Every day (well, I suppose I will admit to occasionally missing), I start my day with a Bible reading.  Over the years I have read hrough the Bible, in a traditional translation, a modern one, in chronological order, etc.  I have re-started my reading again.  This time I am using a modern paraphrased version called The Message.  When you know the Bible, have grown up knowing it, it is good to read varying versions, and in varying orders.

The book I am using has 2 readings per day, and jumps around the Bible.

Anyway, one of the reasons I read is to learn something more of God and my faith, and to give me a "thought for the day".

So foten I skim through a page or two to get out the door in time.  So in the future I am going to try to pick a key verse/thought and post it here.  Please feel free to ignore, as it is mostly for my own benefit.

So, today's reading was Genesis 1 & 2, and Psalm 1.  The verses that I chose are from Genesis:-

"God looked over everything and it was good, so very good ... Heaven and Earth were finished, down to the last detail!"

(Pity us humans muck that up!)

I don't remember if I've mentioned this, but my father is a deacon. (In the Catholic church.)

Over the years he's taught many people who've wanted to join the church, and that very verse is what he starts with. God created the world, and it was good. That's the foundation, that's what we've got to remember.

So thank you for this.

I'll enjoy these postings.As you know I read The Bible daily but in my case start at the beginning of Genesis and read a but each day till I reach the end of Revelations then I switch translations and start again

I'm in Ecclesiastes now and, at this time of rest and relaxation I was struck by these verses

"Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.

How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen, engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bullocks,

his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?

Similarly with all workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for ever trying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the work done.

Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath of the fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, his eyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done well and stays up late to apply the finishing touches.

Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert over his work, each flick of the finger premeditated;

he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying the glaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.

All these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.

A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travelling.

But you will not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not sit on the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.

They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting the philosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade."

I love Ecclesiastes. But like I mentioned so often you read the words and not actually absorb them.

So many centuries ago, yet so true. It is the craftsmen who keep a city going. How often do we forget to notice their work, let alone thank them for it.

Have you ever read The Bible out of order (as I am at present) or chronologically?

I often read some random verses , just opening at random and reading wherever I land or I'll go and read some favourite verses or stories.

And of course the liturgy of the church has set readings for each day and I sometimes use the book of Common Prayer

I have read a Chronological Bible, and that is interesting how the various prophets fit in with the Kings/Chromicles.
