Powderham Castle 1
Monday, September 8th, 2014 09:08 pmAt long last I am getting the last pictures posted. These are from the day trip that Christine and I went on to Powderham Castle .... she came on the bus and I met her there as it is less than 10 miles from my place. Powderham Castle is located in a unique, picturesque setting just outside Exeter, beside the Exe estuary. Six hundred years of history are contained within the walls of one of England's oldest family homes. Sir Philip Courtenay began building it in 1391 and it has remained in the same family to this day, currently home to the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon, therefore no indoor photography is allowed.
The two most amazing things that are to see are the Staircase Hall that has an impressive mahogany staircase decorated with carved heraldic beasts and intricate plasterwork. And the Music Room, designed by James Wyatt in 1788 for the flamboyant 3rd Viscount of Devon, has an Axminster carpet made in about 1798 by Thomas Whitty of the original Axminster Carpets Ltd. That carpet is large and basically in pretty good condition.
( A lovely building, in wonderful scenery )
There are more photos here ... and a few more will be posted in a moment!
( Local fauna )
( The Chapel )

Powderham Castle 2
Monday, September 8th, 2014 09:14 pmAs you saw in the last post there were Birds of Prey there. We went to see 3 of them flying, although sadly it was too hot and they got fed up quickly! Both Christine and I ended up with quite a few images of just sky, or grass, but I did manage to get a few that weren't too blurred!!
( Birds of Prey )
There was also a kids zoo ... that we both enjoyed as well!( Yes we are still a couple of kids at heart )
