Today is the day that traditionally is called Maunday Thursday .... which is commemorated by the Queen every year in giving money to the poor, which was started in AD 600, as you can see here and this year occured at Derby Cathedral. She presented purses of coins to 84 men, and 84 ladies (one for each year of her life) -

And here you can see the Beefeaters bringing the money -

The photos are from the BBC

The Maundy Money ceremoney was started as a commemoration of Jesus Christ washing the feet of the desciples at the Last Supper ... which was the meal that they had before Jesus was arrested and tried to death.

I always like looking at pictures of Her Majesty. She always reminds me of my Nana. Isn't that funny?

Hahahaha! Hardly! Nana's family came to the US in the 1700s and has been here ever since. She just had similar facial features. I should try to find some pictures and get them scanned. :)

I do love your traditions! :)

It's always so interesting to learn about things like this. Your country has so many traditions I know nothing about. Thanks for posting this.

I never knew of this tradition; thanks for telling about it. I wonder how they choose who gets the money.
