Every time I see this film I realise how much I have forgotten about it!

It was quite ironical in that I was watching an episode of M*A*S*H on DVD and it was one that contained an explanation of "Hawkeye" Pierce's name - and as I turned off I realised the the film was on TV ... so a weird link!

But the film is amazing - even though I remember the actual story, I forget about the actual quality of the film -

The history, the scenery, the characters ... BUT ... especially the lighting as well as the music.  It is a film that can be watched again because it has so many layers.  I just wish the rest of Hollywood learnt some lessons from the impact this film has on so many of the senses.

Oh my I remember watching that movie some time ago, and you are so right about the scenery and characters. It was a very good film.

I use to watch MASH but I dont ever remember the one where it explained Hawkeye's name.

Having just deconstructed it for my post-colonial literary class (I withdrew after we studied it), I have to agree with you. The director certainly took it in a very different direction to the novel, layering it with comments about colonial occupation and the American Indian Movement - one of the Native American actors in the film was very active in AIM. The use of Celtic music also makes a comment about the influence of Celtic migration to the USA. And yes, I can academic wank with the best!!
