In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

1)    I have carried on with my icon making - but maybe I should see if I can find out how to make animated ones.

However what I really need to do is that of working on banners ... I can do basic ones, but what to be able to larn to make the multi-layered ones that I adore.

2)    The other thing I really want to do is work harder on my photography. I take (literally) thousands of photos a year ... but I want to see if I can work on the artistic side of the art, rather than just the documentary side of things.

Learning to make multi-layered banners is something I've been doing. If you like, I could probably link you to a couple of tutorials that I found helpful? They're very beginner-level, though, since I started from zero editing experience. Like, "what is a texture", "how to use a layer mask", "how layers even work"...

Cool, I'll see what I can re-find, over the weekend :)

These helped me.

They're for Photoshop, but I do the same things in Pixlr, and I'm sure they work in some other tools too.

I didn't go looking for the "how to combine two images" tutorial, since I understand you're way ahead of that :), but one tip I got from that one was to give each layer a name straight away. Prevents chaos once you've got more than two or three.
