Holiday Photos 4 .... Canary Wharf 1
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014 08:10 pmOn Tuesday I headed to The Isle of Dogs .... now better known as Canary Wharf. From 1939 to 1947 Dad worked on the Barking & Dagenham Docks. So he was slightly further east along the Thanes, but any history from that time would be what he was living.
Canary Wharf has been transformed to a very, very posh shopping centre (well a few adjoining centres) ... not somewhere I would go myself, but ideal for London.
Dad would have worked on repairing cranes like these.

A tourist in one of the gardens!

There is also The Museum of the London Docklands there in a converted warehouse .... so having seen some of the items around that Dad would have been working on, it would be good to see the history ... which started from Roman Londinium, and spread to todays date. There was a video presentation of the bombing of the docks, which certainly brought a lump to my throat.
This is a model of the tugs that were in service during the war ... so would have been what Dad was again repairing.

One of many bombs dropped in this area

A policeman's shelter

Much of the stuff they used was Victorian/Edwardian ... I knew that already, as Dad had said that often.

Date: 2014-07-23 01:49 am (UTC)The second and third ones especially - I feel as if I'm right there across the street from the buildings myself. (Quite a different view of London to what I normally see on tv or the movies.)
So your dad worked on the docks during the war? I can't imagine what it was like to be in London at the time, when the Blitz was going on.
Really lovely way to "touch base" and pay tribute to him - the two of you were close? (is it ok to ask?)
OT - I saw the screenshot they chose at the btvs20in20 for you from Band Candy and I was almost jealous - you are going to have FUN with that shot of Giles and Joyce kissing in front of Buffy, I can almost see how you'll crop it.

Date: 2014-07-23 07:42 pm (UTC)I have always known of Dad's life .... I am so, so proud of him. He left school at 14, and has a PhD .... then near last Christmas he self-published a book on part of the Bible, which at 89 with Alzheimer's is amazing.
Watching the videos in the place where they happened, and seeing "dad" in the men in the images was just very poignant.
I love that image! I shall have to try and do something different, wont I? (oh, just checked, and you haven't signed up!!)

Date: 2014-07-24 01:24 am (UTC)I have had a strange relationship with photographs. so many in our family have been lost - which may be why I collect antique photos of women, circa 1900 - or did for a while. I've never had pictures of ancestors so I guess I envied "someone else's memories" that had been discarded.
I really enjoyed taking photographs in Vermont and got some really gorgeous landscape shots whilst the car was moving - and on macro food setting!
I love that image!
Isn't it great? and there's something so aggressive about it, about his expression, in a very sexy way. (I only regret that it happened when they were both bespelled/drugged and ergo, consent is very questionable here. I would have LOVED for the two of them to get together on the show beyond that (I kept hoping for it, to be honest - what a pairing! Why didn't Joss and the writers pursue that?)
and you haven't signed up!!)
*hides* You're the second person to notice that! I - don't know what I want to do yet. Not that I lack for possible projects, perhaps too many? Buffy in Amends or in S7 are both possibilities, as are Willow/Tara, Joyce with or without her daughters...decisions.
