BtVS Icons
Monday, April 28th, 2014 01:46 pmAs I have said over the last few days I am trying to get my life back ... and so have entered the last few rounds of
slayerstillness ... here are the icons from 2 of those ... one focussing on vampires, and one on negative space ... enjoy ... snag if you want.

Date: 2014-04-29 07:54 pm (UTC)So now that I'm starting to feel more confident about my icons - I wonder if I need to watch being arrogant and overconfident again. Fortunately there are SO many talented artists, that's not an issue for long; I'm constantly reminded how much I have to learn!
I think you've told me before but do you use Photoshop?

Date: 2014-04-29 08:22 pm (UTC)I use GIMP ... a free one. When someone persuaded me to have a go I didn't think I could manage because of my colour problems ... so they pointed me to a free one. I don't know how much better Photoshop is, but so far, I like GIMP.

Date: 2014-04-29 11:16 pm (UTC)I've been playing back and forth trying out ipiccy, pixlr-o-matic, picmonkey and now pixlr.com (all free of course). I think I tried Paint.net once? (One day I should give them all a go with their basic effects and then write a review or something.)
The thing is with all these programs and capability, you'd think that SOMEONE beside Photobucket would combine editing suite with storage? that's why I can't give up PB yet.
I guess you could say I'm a loose woman. *LOL*

Date: 2014-04-30 03:49 pm (UTC)I should have a look at some of the others out there - but when I get concentration time, I tend to like to work on the icons, and not seeing what other programmes have.

Date: 2014-04-29 06:55 pm (UTC)As for #1, I do like trying to get images from lesser used scenes.

Date: 2014-04-29 03:15 am (UTC)And the Giles one - such a simple composition. Very quiet and elegant, as befits the man. I like the assymetrical compostions of that set.
Congrats Deb, this is well-deserved!

Date: 2014-04-29 07:00 pm (UTC)Yep, I love working with the more unusual scenes ... the acting is often so special, yet they get forgotten in favour of the same popular images.
I like early Giles, so it was good to do an icon ... I rarely make any of his Pointing to icon !!!

Date: 2014-04-29 07:10 pm (UTC)No, because I ended up using a couple in the current SS challenge; so I decided to wait until after the winners are announced for the current one and then kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.
(Which is killing ME, as it happens because I entered those ASAP and have had to sit on my hands. The feedback everyone's given me has been so lovely and oh goodness so good for my little ego - I want to share!)

EXACTLY! Sometimes I like to work with a well-known scene/ep but focus the spotlight on a character/aspect/detail that often gets overlooked.
I rarely make any of his Pointing to icon !!!
*points as Giles/Joyce icon back at you* *LOL*
How did you do that one? Is the background a separate layer? I like the effect of it being very far in the distance from him (I've yet to attempt layers in any of the programs I'm learning.)
I've only made a few Giles ones myself, some of them rather, *ahem* cheeky/snarky *S7). there are people who do really beautiful work with him (and Ethan) so I don't tend to; I have a restless one and some S4 icons I'm pleased with.

Date: 2014-04-29 07:22 pm (UTC)I love the Giles/Joyce story ... I have started a Spuffy fic that also has Giles/Joyce ... I must get down, focus, and write!
Oh yes, LAYERS !!! ... I had to learn to use them for a StarTrek comp ... and the mod was great at giving me a couple of starting pointers!
However, I still tend not to use them all that much ... images like that one (and others) are made by me "circling/free drawing" around the point of focus ... so, usually the person. I then work on that part of the picture, then I reverse the selection "half". I then tend to reduce the hue and saturation ... or increase the white balance. (As in this icon as well ... which I also slightly blurred)
That way you don't have to battle with layers but can work on each "half" separately ... hope that makes sense.

Date: 2014-04-30 02:06 am (UTC)*SQUEES* YES PLEASE!
I thought G/J was such a fabulous idea abd was dying to see it happen (yet another way they could have intergrated Joyce into the series more, although the actress may have only wanted to work a limited amount of time. I think that's the reason we don't see her hardly at all in S4?) But the fireworks and issues were so interesting esp in Anne forward. So much unexplored potential there.
What surprises me as usual is why I don't see more G/J fic - but then again I can ship Giles with everyone BUT Buffy - the most common pairing. (ugh)
hope that makes sense.
It makes perfect sense! I did something similar the other day - I'm starting to play with the "focus" function in PB, which is very simple - blurs/softens everything outside a circle or area you chose to keep sharp; then lessen contrast. (PB currently has saturation but not "hue" per se, so that's a big gaping hole in their editing suite IMO.) I'm just starting to play with it a bit (my eyes don't always like too much blurring but I like the push-pull aspect of it. Yours is particularly striking btw and as always I've seen lots of Chosen icons and not a single one of that exact image or that looks quite like yours.)

Date: 2014-04-30 03:46 pm (UTC)That Chosen icon annoys me slightly, as I still don't think I have lightened the background enough ... to me Spike was there for Buffy ... that's what I wanted, but they aren't often in the same frame!

Eh? And they are definitely the focus and everyone else is hazy. The meaning is definitely conveyed I think.
To me, Buffy can't let any one person be her entire world because she's responsible for the ENTIRE world. She's Mama Bear. When she did make one person her entire world, people got hurt/killed (Angel(us) ) and her world fell apart.
And I know, speaking of Spike's dedication to his ladies, from 17 years relationship (and watching my mom) that cutting yourself off from everyone else and hyper focusing on just one person that it is a problem. It seems romantic at first because that's what we're encouraged to do. But we need a fuller world than that.
And I certainly don't want to deny either one of them the fullness of their lives. They both have people and history that have nothing to do with each other; and that's a good thing.
At the very least it gives one something to chat with your mate with at the end of the day!
