My Firsts - If You Haven't Got Too Bored By Now!
Wednesday, April 11th, 2012 10:05 amI am at Mum & Dad's as I am taking Mum for a heart scan soon. It is in the next town, although they have a huge hospitala mile away .... the weirdness that is NHS rules, obviously. So, while slurping a cuppa I thought I would catch up with the meme that is scattering my pages. I think by now I am the last of my friends to do it! It was snagged from all over the place - but especially from
pfeifferpack as she said that I was most likely to do it ... so here I am.
1. Who was your FIRST prom date?
LOL - When I was a kid we didn't "do" American things! When I was 18 we had a leavers disco, that I actually went to .... my first ever. My greatest memory is at the end we crossed arms and sang "Should Auld Aquaintance Be Forgot" ... so I always love singing that song on 1st Jan as it brings back good school memories.
2. Do you still talk to your FIRST love?
Never had a "love" as such, but when I was 3 - 4 my "boyfriend" was Mervyn ... he died of leukemia about 15 years ago ... his mum is still in contact with mum & dad ... We were all at the same Church together.
3. What was your FIRST alcoholic drink?
Homemade lemon wine ... very sweet, very drinkable (very strong)! Dad used to make it and we had it Christmas etc - I think it was the Christmas I was 13ish that I was allowed some. My first strong drink was actually when I was 17 1/2 ... on 3rd Jan 1989 ... I know that as it was the morning of Granddad's funeral. I loved him, and it was also my first personal loss, but I had flu, so wasn't meant to go as it was snowing - Grandma said I was going and sent an uncle to buy some whiskey from an off- licence!
4. What was your FIRST job?
Not counting babysitting - I worked at a Health Food Store on Saturdays when I was in the 6th form at school (16 - 18)
5. What was your FIRST car?
I bought a 5 month old Peugeot 205 in pale blue.
6. Who was the FIRST person to text you today?
No one, yet, but don't text tooooooo many people, so not suprising.
.... What happened to 7?
Anyone get that question????
8. Who was your FIRST grade teacher, tell us about them?
Miss Ffaulkes. I was 5 and hadn't gone to Nursery - she believed in "silence is golden" ... had a mixed class of 4 to 7, and mostly English speaking, but by the time you were 7 she had got you mostly bilingual in Welsh. I only stayed a term and can picture that classroom to this day. btw, she was 82!
9. Where did you go on your FIRST air plane ride?
At 17 we went from Southend to Guernsey as a belated celebration of Mum & Dad's 25th anniversary (they spent their honeymoon on Jersey). I remember it being fun to be going on a plane, but hating the pressure in my body while travelling ... I still feel the same.
10. Who was your FIRST best friend & do you still talk?
Stefanie, when I was 1 - 5!!! She had 2 older brothers and we used to watch Dr Who from behind her parents sofa on a Saturday eve. Her parents and M&D are still in contact. I haven't seen Stefanie since, but other than the fact she is married with kids her life is similar - she learnt to horse ride as an adult, she is a nurse (a Sister) and involved with her Church. Loves travel and photography and plays the piano. So, maybe if we hadn't moved to England we would have stayed friends.
11. Where was your FIRST sleep over?
Never had one, until I was at college. Then I stayed a few times on my friends floor after an end of term party .... as the trains home finished at midnight.
13. Whose wedding were you in the FIRST time?
If you ask Tim this question you will have to laugh at his answer - his own! Yes, he always states that was the only reason he got married so he could go to a wedding!
LOL
I went to a wediing when I was 4 ... with Dad as it was just before Nick was born, and apparantly was spoilt rotten.
As to one I was involved in - that would be my trip to USA to be Maid of Honour for my friend Annemarie - that was a great trip, but scary to see the differences in a wedding ... the main being I stood next to the Pastor facing the congregation (200+)
I was then chief bridesmaid for Claire and a bridesmaid for Brenda. "Three times a bridesmaid - never a bride"!
14. What was the FIRST thing you did this morning?
Listened to the news headlines, then got up (went to the loo) and then downstaires to get the kettle on and pour my pint of water. I drink that to go with one pill for coughing, and while slurping I read my Bible ... Acts 23 - 26 today!
15. What was the FIRST concert you ever went to?
LOL - James Marsters! .... May 4th 2007
(Only concerts - James Marsters!)
Well, I have played in orchestra and band concerts, but with this question I have James as my answer, and I'm sticking to it!
16. FIRST tattoo?
Daren't - mummy would have apoplexy! (And I don't like pain!)
17. FIRST piercing?
I had my ears done on that trip to Guernsey in 1978, nothing else.
18. FIRST foreign country you went to?
France - 1977. We went as a family camping in Normandy and Brittany. To me the greatest memory is standing on the top of Omaha Beach and wondering how anyone survived, at all. Oh, and falling down part of the steps leading up to the Sacre Coeur!
19. FIRST movie you remember seeing?
First at a cinema was The Jungle Book. When I was a kid I think I saw 4 films at the cinema with the family. That, One of our Dinosaurs is Missing, Sound of Music and Gone With The Wind. That was until I was 18! At college I think I went about 10 times in 4 years ... although 3 of those times was to see Gallipoli!
20. When was your FIRST detention?
Never, ever! In fact our class was the only class in our year not to have a class detention!
22. Who was your FIRST roommate?
Never had a roommate.
23. If you had one wish. What would it be?
I could say that it was for world peace, cessation of starvation, or something similar!
Or, I could say, I would love to personally wish James a Happy Birthday in August.
You pick my real answer!!!
24. What is something you would learn if you had the chance?
I have tried French and Piano with no luck. But I loved cards over the years, so i would love to larn Bridge ... I used to play a lot of Whist, so like the challenge of a good card game. I will get organised - I have promised myself.
25. Did you marry the FIRST person to ask for your hand in marriage?
LOL - Single!
26. What was the first sport that you were involved in?
Involved - Judo. I never faught for my club, but I was school Judo captain for 3 years. I did Fence for my Fencing Clup in the County league.
27. What were the first lessons you ever took?
School!
Otherwise Judo ... and, for those who know me, I did start Judo before the clarinet, and I have never had clarinet lessons!
28. What is the first thing you do when you get home?
Put on the kettle ... then while it is boiling a quick shower and change of clothes.
29. Who do you think will be the next person to post this?
I think you have all done it ... but if not, I had better see the answers from l

Date: 2012-04-11 02:33 pm (UTC)Oh I love the film Gallipoli! It is so sad but beautifully done and captures the futility of war IMHO.
You are self taught on the clarinet! I am sooooooo impressed!
I love games of all sorts (board, video, card) and my card game of choice has always been canasta. My family used to play rousing games of cut throat canasta after all our big family get togethers. The tradition continues down to the great grandchildren.
How wonderful that your first teacher encouraged bi-lingual students. The old languages should never be allowed to die out and I am happy to hear that Welsh, Scots and Irish (and Manx too I believe) still have some life left! The world would be poorer without them.
*hugs*
Kathleen
hope all is well with your mum...will be praying.

Date: 2012-04-12 06:53 pm (UTC)Canasta - oh, another card game I want to learn at some point.
Yes, Welsh was taught in about 1/4 of the schools when I was a kid. Nice to learn, but impossible for people like me who find English tough anyway!
*hugs*
Mum was diagnosed with a mild cardiac condition - but her GP had already started her on treament, so it looks as if it was more confirmation that it was only a mild problem. Thank you ..... *hugs* again.

Date: 2012-04-11 03:48 pm (UTC)I might do this meme in the next few days. I've seen it all around LJ. I think I did it a while back, but will do again. I still owe Tommy the Character one with the name of a certain letter. He gave me K. I have two or three characters, still need to post it.
The whole single thing. Better to wait than marry the wrong guy. I did that and gave up about twenty years of my life. Now I came out of it a stronger person, but still should have picked a better guy.

Date: 2012-04-12 06:58 pm (UTC)Great news for you I am so pleased to read that. Hope the nasty taste has gone now - I know that at the hospital they warn people about the flavour!
Yes, it was a good meme - good fun. Yes I have 5 letter thingy to do as well.
Funny thing is until recently I had never thought about marriage - always agree that better to be happy and single, than married for the sake of it. Yes, you did lose 20 years, but you gained Robert ... so that was a special reason for that stage of your life, wasn't it?
