... Yes, the house is sold.

I got the price I was expecting, even though the Estate Agent was unsure I would get that figure as the house, inside and out, needs decorating.

So, now I have to decide on a property ... I'm looking a bit on the internet tonight and have seen 2 that I want to look at - just hope I can get to see at least one tomorrow before I start work.

Prices in Exeter vary a lot as there are one or two very poor areas, but as I said to Tim, you can get good people in bad areas, and bad people in good areas.  So I continue to trust that God will guide me to "the" house.

That is great news! Cash buyers in today's market is wonderful. And the house sold very quickly, at least by U.S. standards. I know that that puts a lot of pressure on you. Are you sure that you want to buy quickly? Or rent until you know where you want to live?

It has always been received wisdom in the U.S. that owning is preferable to renting. In the U.S., owners can deduct the interest on their mortgages from income, so the government is actively encouraging home ownership. However, with the prices of real estate still falling many Americans have chosen to rent. Some say they may never buy. It is a complex subject. A lot depends on whether rent is cheaper than mortgages, maintenance, etc. Here is a very useful article which recently appeared in the NYTimes:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/11/business/economy/11leonhardt.html?_r=1&scp=5&sq=david%20leonhardt&st=cse

More recent articles are showing that the % of Americans owning houses is dropping.

The obligations of renters in the U.S. varies in different areas. In NYC, the landlord has to provide all appliances. He is obligated to paint every 3 years in the tenant desires. He is liable for all repairs to anything other than renter's property or damage caused by tenant to rental property. An example of how odd local rules can be: in Colorado the standard rental agreement requires the tenant must pay for professional carpet cleaning when they move out. (Wall to wall carpet is ubiquitous in Colorado.)

Wow, fast turn around. Seems a higher power decided you need to move and get on with your life. I'm sure he has great plans for you.

For some reason every time today when I go to your journal I get a white background. LJ was a bit wonky the last few days so I guess that is part of it. Looks strange. White background and your gifs on the left side with your post and comments all spread in a odd way. Your header is there, but the rest of the format is messed up.

WOW! That was fast going! Kudos Debs!

You can get good people in bad areas. Take us for example, our neighbour is as good as people get :D
