I Won A Mini Something!

My first ever win at anything via LJ!!!!

While I have been unemployed I am trying to be positive as to my day - and as I love icons I thought I would have a bit of a go as the 3 competition sites I found provide the pictures!  So, learning basic crop and re-size has been fun ... Yay ...

 

Even better as it was on a tie break, so got the final vote!

Since then the BtVS one I have been playing with talked textures this week - so I was lost ... but they (and one of my friends here) pointed me to a free download ... which is now on my computer ... and it's scary!  I am trying to find a basic place to start, but each time I look I panic ... so, next week, I must concentrate and learn.

Anyway, here are a few of the ones I have been playing with, that are non-Buffy

It is fun to do the first bit - but ... yes, you need software to d more ... Mind you you manage to do the flickering icons like your lovely "sigh" one.

Anyway - the one I downloaded is GIMP ... it's free, and there are LJ GIMP pages - so have a look and see if you can get it to work ... and if so, tell me how - LOL

What program do you use? There's plenty of tutorials and such around that should lead you through the basics.

All these were done on real basic paint/photo editer

I have just downloaded GIMP and can open it ... but then begin to panic.

Yes, that's what I need to find a basic guide to get those real first stages sorted out.

I've never used that one but I've seen some great icons/graphics done with it. I think gimp_users has some good tutorials.

Congrats! Icon making is a lot of fun. I like coloring. I have to start practicing with textures. I was going to try this weekend.

I don't know if I'll ever get as far as, or try colouring cos being colourblind I am wary of that - but I shall keep going!

Congratulations - your winning icon is lovely, and I really like some of the Farscape ones too. As someone who'd love to be able to make better icons (rather than just cropping pics to 100x100) I'm very impressed with your achievements.

Thanks Carolyn - this is why I'm trying hard to learn more than the basic basic while I have the time - and thus it also feels a positive step in this gap.

That is a pretty ICON.

As for GIMP. I use it for my pictures and you just have to go ahead and use it. It asks if you want the changes saved and in what name, so there is no worry for the originals. It also has a help menu which is actually pretty good. Go For It. Looking forward to seeing your Icons.

It was good to straat with the basic cropping - now I have caught the bug, I've decided I must try to get the next stage done.

Yay! Icons! And of my favorite shows! WEEEE! How cool to see you making them! :D I wish I wasn't so limited on icons space now. I've been thinking of upgrading my account again, but... am I remembering things wrong? It seems like the last time I had a paid account, I was allowed to have more than 30 icons. *scratches head*

I thought of you when I made the Farscape ones! ... And the Voyager ones!

I think (note think) you get 30 free and have to pay for the rest - in groups of 70 extra ... I have 180 now ... and still not enough. Those figures don't add up though, do they? I think, maybe, I got an extra few spaces as being a paid member when they changed the settings!

I just use the classic excuse - LJ is my one indulgence ... I don't smoke!
