It was very hard to decide what to post today - so I have, yet again, bent the rules!

I am posting a picture of a place that I used to visit regularily, as it was on the way to my Grandparents. Just outside the city of Cambridge, is the town of Madingley - and this is taken on the aprt of American soil that remains there.

I have a "hobby" of visiting War Cemetaries wherever I go - and the few USA ones I have been to have rows of white crosses - so sad, so much loss of life and potential - so much heartbreak. However, that isn't the picture, because in each of these hallowed corners are chapels, with individual designs apropriate to the area of the war that they were part of.

Cambridgeshire is part of the area where the USAAF were based - and my mother was used to watching the Flying Fortresses over her village. This beautiful mosaic depicts those planes travelling with the angels - a very moving image, IMHO. I think that the image must have been inspired by the third verse of the Palm Sunday hymn, "Ride on, ride on, in Majesty" :-

Ride on, ride on, in majesty!
The wingèd squadrons of the sky
Look down with sad and wondering eyes
To see the approaching sacrifice.

Take a moment to remember those who fought and died and are buried on foreign soil ... and their families and friends left sad at home.

Take another moment to remember those who still serve - both at home and abroad ... and their families who wait.
