debris4spike: (DJ - plaited!)

... And it started in style!

I was very lucky when I got DJ in this morning, because as I walked into the stable the rain started ... and continued all the time I was grooming him and tacking him up, so Toni got wet getting Smudge in.

However by the time we were ready, the rain eased and it was a lovely day.

As none of us can ride tomorrow we had a longer than average ride, round the village, as well as down to the first valley ... which is lovely, very English-countryside, but a ride DJ hates ... you go down, means you have to come back up the other side!  Although he is fitter than ever he still actually mumbles while walking uphill!!!

So we haeded back with the rain holding off, and then it was time to feed him, before he could go back out to his field to tell Conrad how hard he had to work today!!!

You were luckier with the weather than we were - it rained more or less all day here. And it doesn't look much better this morning...

As you know from your visit to the southwestern part of the U.S., this is an arid area. My part (Durango, CO) has a lot of mountains, some as high as 14,000 feet(4.2km). We don't ever get up that high but we do ride up at 10-12,000 ft. (Durango itself is about 6000 ft above sea level - 1.9 km) We generally put the horses in a van, take them north of Durango into the mountains and ride from a base of around 8,000 ft. It is so beautiful. We mostly ride through national or state forests. We do have to share the trails with hikers, mountain bicycles and an occasional dirt motorcycle. The horses have to get used to these disturbances.

On Saturday we took a 12 mile ride which was very steep in parts. We had to share the trails with all the aforementioned. My friend's horse was spooked by a guy on a bicycle who was carrying a long cylindrical case slung around his shoulder. Maybe the horse thought it was a horn. Next her husband's mule spooked at a tree stump. Silly animals. Anyway we had a great ride.

Tomorrow I may go ride with one of my friends who has two mares. She has trails around the subdivision that she lives in. That might be similar to riding around your village.

My horse is as close to bomb proof as a horse can get. After a while when the two younger animals (both 9 yo) were spooking at normal type trail issues, we put Levi in front and let him deal with the terrifying objects.
