This is an "ariel" view to show that the canal and the river do run side by side ... and out towards the Atlantic Ocean. I walked up to the top of a bank surrounding the council offices to take this for you all!
A lot of the canals in England are mostly used for pleasure now. This used to take sand from this beach to Launceston, and then onto the river and so to Plymouth for building - thus avoiding the treacherous coast.
Ah, someone asked first. I wondered what the canal was used for ... interesting history. Guess that's what happens when a country has so much history. We've only got over two hundred years of European settlement history - seems so little in comparison to other places.
