DJ - A Beautiful Morning, Therefore The Camera was Busy.

Today was "Wednesday" in disguise!

The sun was shining and DJ and I were meeting up with Ros.

Yesterday I had given DJ such a great groom, that although he had rolled, he came in pretty clean - and as his mane and tail were sprayed, they were still fairly untangled ... and all his "nooks and crannies" were still clean.  So all in all, I managed to get him done in time to take some pictures.  The first one is similar to the one I have already posted for the 366 Day MEME that I am doing - His first plait of the year.

As I said, the sun was out, and he has his winter coat, so I plaited him.


 

As you can see, his tail is combed out.

 

In the sunshine, you can really see that he desparately needs a bath!  A lorry was driving past the gate, which is why he is focussed like that.

 

And, to prove he has 2 sides -

 

I then packed my camera away and rode up to meet Ros and the-horse-with-no-name.  We didn't go far, as DJs foot was a bit sore from where he had pulled off his shoe - that's why he was back in his boots again today.

Guess what - yes, I took him bac to his field after feeding him and ... more mud!

The horses here are covered in mud but basking and rolling in the sunshine!

I just wish DJ would wait so that I don't actually have to watch him destoying my hard work!

Oh yes - DJ loves rolling - just wish I didn't have to watch him muck up all my hard work ... But he's happy, that's the main thing.

I just wish you could see his true colour, not the muddy colour that he always adopts ... I think he is hoping that if he is in disguise I won't recognise him!

OK, what breed are these? They have beautiful fluffy fetlocks. Is that the right word? Bebe asks why are they down, and can they get up by themselves, and are they fragile.

The fetlocks are the lower joints - but it is called feathers when it is like that! The 2 with the "feathers" are Cob in breed, as is Conrad; Smudge is a Moorland pony and DJ is a Connemara.

DJ is OK, he just loves rolling! Not all horses roll, but those who do have lots of reasons -

1 - If DJ is hot and sweaty he rolls in dry mud to dry himself ... like a towel!

2 - When I have groomed him, he has my smell on him, not that I wear perfume, but I am a human. By rolling he then smells of horse and earth.

3 - DJ is light coloured when clean. If he lived in the wild, he would end up being spotted and attacked by other animals ... so by rolling he looks the same colour as the ground, and is harder to spot.

4 - Sometimes he has an itch - and no hands, so it is his way of scratching!
