Meeting The Horse With No Name.
Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 08:42 pmWednesday - and lovely weather - and time to get back to a normal routine!
Wish I had my camear today though, because as I went to get DJ in from the field, he had this huge blob of mud between his eyes - maybe he had been trying to do a head-stand!!
Anyway - in we came and he had a mouthful of hay and a groom - very hard with a damp horse - but he needed to be comfortable to wear his tack.
Toni came out, tacked up Smudge, I tacked up DJ just in time for Ros to arrive ... riding ?????
She collected another horse on Monday - seemed nice, mixed breed. We asked her name and Ros said that she hadn't come with one - so Toni asked what she was called and Ros said that she hadn't named her.
To me, that is so, so sad. Ros cares for her animals, they are beautifully turned out ... yet that extra something is missing
Oh well - other than that it was a lovely ride. We went down to the Church and round the block ... a reasonable amount of traffic, but overall it was beautifull - plenty to chat about - and in the sunshine ... Yay!!
Once back I fed DJ and then walked him out to his field - carrying hay for him and Conrad ... I am sure DJ hoped I would let him have it and forget to tell Conrad - but in the end he did agree to share!!

Date: 2009-01-29 10:51 am (UTC)Ros said the passport was in the post!
Your story of Ruffles made me laugh - we had a pony at the yard called Hotpoint ... she had been called Tinkerbell when she arrived, but Toni's husband said he refused to call her that when yelling across a field! So she had the 2 names for about 6 months to get her OK with it.

Date: 2009-01-29 10:13 pm (UTC)I'm currently breaking in two two year old colts that are flat race bred. I have known them all their lives - I even foaled one down - but have given neither a nickname.
Of nine yearlings on the stud - only one has been given a nickname - Bambi - because it looks more like a deer than a thoroughbred! LOL!
My own always have names though :) A foal I bred had several stable names until Travis stuck! His registered name Quizmaster was decided on after a couple of hours! LOL!

Date: 2009-02-01 08:30 pm (UTC)Toni names them immediately - in fact DJ had his stable name before she met him (LOL) and then his "real" name within 24 hours ... and she didn't think she would be keeping him at that time.
As for other nick-names - better not tell you what we call DJ or Jiffy!!!!!

Date: 2009-02-01 08:39 pm (UTC)I bought a mare from Ireland several years ago and she had no name with her. We settled on a registered name fairly quickly but her stable name took a little longer. She was eventually called Lips as she flapped her lips when she was ridden! LOL!
I suppose it doesn't worry me so much as when working with flat bred racehorses they are not normally named until they are at least a year old and have been through the sales - sometimes even longer. They are referred to by the name of their dam.
A couple of years ago we nicknamed one of the foals 'Dog' as she followed you around like a puppy dog. Unfortunately the term is used for a racehorse who doen't try on the track and she must have taken it to heart as she was a complete non trier in all of her starts! LOL! We better nickname the best bred colt that we're breaking in, Speedy! LOL

Date: 2009-01-30 08:52 am (UTC)I am glad you a had a lovely ride. There are times that I really miss riding. It was like a mini vacation to get away from the world for a few hours.

Do you think riding is something you will ever get back to?
