debris4spike: (Christmas Tree - James standing.)

In our house that doesn't just mean the designer tinsel and baubles that are "in" this year.

Below the cut are 8 pictures of decorations ... 1 of which are 80 years old!

When Mum was born, it was February, but for her first Christmas her parents bought another Angel to hang on the tree - So, it has now been hung up 80 times ... a bit faded, but no tree would be proper without it.

The following year, she had a trumpet - slightly less shiny than it was, but much loved all the same.

This cardboard picture, was designed as a stand-alone one, but we now stick it on glass.  it was bought for my Grandparents when Mum was about 5.

This decoration has a pull-out tum, and was the first decoration than Mum and Dad bought for their house, 56 years ago.  Before I was born - no tree!
Photobucket

This is of a similar style and was bought for my first Christmas - 47 years ago.

We had our first tree when I was 18 months old - and my Mum's cousin bought the Angel to go on top.  This is therefore 46 years old, and now hangs, with a couple of other Angels, on the curatins, overlooking the tree.

As you know I love giraffes - and this was bought the Christmas I was 3 1/2 in recognition of that.

And, to prove we do have regular baubles ... However most of ours are a variety of colours and shapes, like this one.

They are all in wonderful condition. We have very few ornaments that are more than ten years old - D-d donated her home-made ones to the clinic I was based in at that time, as we had a bare tree!

We got a new tree for home that year, and the first of our glass ornaments. More have then been added since - and are greeted now as long-time friends when they come out, but really they are not that old!

I love to mix old and new on the tree. It makes the tree so interesting. I often buy co-workers and friends ornaments for presents. I still have the wooden ornaments I painted to use of the tree when the boys were little. Was afraid they might break the glass ones so put the wooden ones on the lower branches. Your ornaments are lovely and bring memories back to you.

Cool :)
So the Christmas 'bauble' is the reason you're so in love with giraffes? You've started the love early ;)

I love your decorations with so much history behind them. I can remember decorations we had when I was little, but I don't know whether my mum still has them in the loft at home or whether they've all been thrown away. I remember bells, balls, santas and snowmen that all had pull out bits though.

*grin*

That's like the ornaments and decorations in my house. As a matter of fact, we have a trumpet exactly like the one in your second photo. It was on my Grammy's tree. Sadly, I'm not sure of the story behind it.

I loved this post. Yours and your mum's decorations and the memories behind them are such a wonderful example of the real meaning of Christmas.

I don't have any really old ones, I do have one bought my son ( gold train) and he's just had his 22nd xmas.

I do have a crystal bowl and platter which was my mum's (who's 90 in March) grandmother's.
