Go Ahead ... Ask Anything!
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 05:06 pmI have quite a few reallly great friends here, but some who are more recently added.
I think I am quite open - but have snagged this idea from
The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!
So - go ahead and ask.
Some of you I don't even know if you even read what I say as you never comment - so just a "Hi" would be great as well!

2. Since I'm from the other side of the world, Latin America, I would really like to know what's the view you have from us at the other side of the pond, I mean, what did you know about Latin America before and how are we viewed from there?
3. Oh, and I'm always curious about this, always ask to people: Do you believe there's aliens out there? Life in another planet?
4. Oh, one more, sorry, the really obvious things: what's your favorite color? Favorite flower? Favorite smell?

Date: 2008-10-14 07:20 pm (UTC)2. Sadly I think that most of what we see is the poverty of places such as Cuba, and of the street children. We haer of the dances such as the Samba ... so I suppose I would tend to think that there is a huge divide between rich and very poor. Underlying that I would think that there is still a lot of Spanish influence - in the family life and faith.
I suppose that what you have made me realise by asing this, is that it tends to be a part of the world that we don't really hear much about ... I must remedy that.
3. I believe in God and the Bible. Thats starts by saying God made the heavens and the earth - so I can see no reason why there isn't life "out there" ... But maybe that's my love of Sci Fi coming out!
4. Green - but that is also reinforced because I am colour blind, so see yello and brown as green!
Roses, honeysuckle - but scented flowers, and both are in flower for my birthday.
Cold dog!!! My parents have had dogs, and now Jiffy, of he goes out to the garden on a cool evening, when he returns his coat has a lovely smell!! Other than that - a chip shop, with freshly cooked chips!!

I think (and this is my very personal opinion) that it has to do a lot with the fact that some of the countries had dictatorial governments for decades and people never really could make their own decisions sometimes and when you live like that for so much time, you don't learn to think for yourself, and you're easily influeced by other people, who just want to take advantage of you really.
Also, when you lived oppresed for so much time, you tend to, once free of the oppresor, confuse liberty with licentiousness. People that lived opressed finally got a taste of power at the end of the dictatorial governments and that was intoxicating, they stopped thinking about the people that put them there in the first place.
Moreover, when you have someone dictating all the rules in your life, you get an easy path really, 'cause you don't face responsability, and when you're free that sticks with you, most Latin American people, are always looking at the candidates running for president as if they were magicians or something, looking for someone to fix their problems, and well, that's not how it works (I think) everyone has to play a part in making society better.
3. I like the way you put that, pretty much agree with you!
4. Wow, I would have never imagined, not with the lovely pictures you take! I mean, they are always full of colours, how do you which pictures to take? And is it like that with all the colours or just yellow and brown? Red, do you red?

Date: 2008-10-15 10:05 am (UTC)There are a few things I don't like about my Country - and one or two political decisions I hate ... But I always remind myself that we live in a free country - and have always been free .... Something noe of us should ever take for granted.
4. - I can see red and orange ... and shades between ... and Blue ... but, blue-green/petrol/turquoise etc all are green.
I don't see grey - DJ is actually a soft lilac shade! (Don't tell him!).
So - I see colours, but miss the shades between, as I have basically lost yellow. I also find it impossible to match things - I love wearing bright clothes ... and if it is just me and family/close friends, I don't mind ... but if I am going out, doing something ... even just going shopping I have to remember what to wear with what or ask Mum, or Toni. So, they have to remember what is in my wardrobe as well as I do!

Date: 2008-10-14 07:23 pm (UTC)I have never been in a position to even be tempted to do something. Most of the time, even though I may think she is strict, I do automatically fall into line (even though I am the age I am!!) ... I think there would only be one (or two) things, that would never happen anyway, where I would break away from that.
I'm just a very"sad" person ... or is it that I am boring!

Date: 2008-10-14 05:11 pm (UTC)I've always wondered if you could have any type of horse(or even more than one) in the world and money and the time to train (or to pay a trainer) was no object- what would you have? (and no, this is not a slam at DJ the sweetie) Just curious.

Date: 2008-10-14 07:29 pm (UTC)The perfect equine would be a combination of Jaykub and DJ.
I love the 14.2 pony ( that's their heights ... they were the same).
He would have DJs coat ... Jaykub had Sweat itch.
He would be a gelding - mares are too moody.
He would be placid like DJ, but with Jaykub's spirit ... DJ can be stubborn, whereas Jaykub was a bit too firey.
Jaykub was more demonstrative in his love, which I do miss.
DJ is happier being groomed, plaited, trimmed - Jaykub hated that.
So - he would be a "Native" British pony ... with a combination of both boys.
Ponies are slightly dippy, but in being mad, they tend to have a real personality and character.

3. What are you most proud of in your life?
no subject
Date: 2008-10-14 07:36 pm (UTC)1. The first time I met James!!
But also, my graduation (especially as I had failed at school, so to finish my training - wow); Dad's graduation for his PhD, and then he got a book actually published last year, at 83.
2. The day Jaykub died - Toni had to phone to tell me that she had to call a vet as he had broken his leg as a 10 year old. It was also the day she gave me DJ on loan ... so ended on a slightly more positive note.
The day before my 21st I was run over - that is a day that I still suffer from, although at the time it didn't seem too bad (LOL)
3. My parents - in their 80s and still well enough to go abroad ... and still wanting to go abroad.
My graduation, and thus 25 years as an osteopath!

Date: 2008-10-14 07:44 pm (UTC)At 21 I had just been run over(!), but considering my bike and the taxi damage, I was relatively OK. I was 3/4 way through my course - and passing oK, which coonsidering I had failed my A levels, I was working hard. So, really I was at a good stage in my life.
I was sad about being single, as most of my friends had "other halves" ... so I suppose I would tell myself that I could survive. I have lost touch with most of my friends from those days ... and I think that would have been hard to deal with as they were the first real friends I had. So it would have been mostly about telling myself there was more to life than those friends and living in Essex.
Life is great - so much to explore and I could do it on my own. My family would always be there, as would my faith ... and in the future, I would gain some great friends (although I would not say how long ahead that time would be).
Thanks for reminding me of what was a good few months in my life ... so it would be that of reassuring myself that as things changed, there were good things on the horizon.
questions!
Date: 2008-10-14 09:01 pm (UTC)2. when did you start riding horses?
3. what state do you live in?
4. have you ever been in love, and if so, how many times?
Re: questions!
Date: 2008-10-14 09:30 pm (UTC)I am 47 ... as my dad will say I was born in an upsidedown year!! - 1961
I started riding horses when I was 34, but only for about a year off and on, then when I was 36 I met Toni and started learning to ride properly. I was 41 when Mum bought me Jaykub, who died the following year, and I have had DJ on permenant loan since then.
I live in the County (or Duchy ... whichever you prefer) of Conwall in England. The town about 20 mins drive from me is Tintagel, which is famous for where King Arthur is reputed to have lived. So, over on the far south-west tip of the country.
I was born in Essex, which is a county on the east of London.
No I have never been in love. I have been out on a few dates - all of whom are Christians, but I never felt anything more than being out with a friend. However, when I met James Marsters, I will admit I can now understand what reaction people have to each other - he is (as everyone who meets him agrees) one very special guy!!
Re: questions!
Date: 2008-10-14 10:04 pm (UTC)I have just one more follow-up question. What is the significance of your username?
Re: questions!
Date: 2008-10-15 10:13 am (UTC)All the fics etc are "beta'd" to help with language ... and it was through looking for this I found LJ ... and needed a name.
OK -
Debris ... well, having seen my stuff you will know that I am accident prone - and always have been. The conductor at Bude Orchestra gave me the name Debris when he met me. I am called Deborah and don't like being called Debbie - so I corrected hi, and as I had a black eye at the time he said I looked more like a Debris anyway ... and it has stuck ... it is what he always calls me.
4 Spike ... I said I fell in love with the series - well ... in the past I had always said I wouldn't watch it as I don't agree with witches and demons etc . I had Toni's 2 girls staying and they looked at an episode ... I walked into my lounge, saw the TV and fell in love ... with Spike ... as you see my my user page and my journal, Spike and therefore James Marsters are everywhere!
So Debris 4 Spike
How did you get your name - is your real name Joy?

Date: 2008-10-14 10:59 pm (UTC)Looking back on how your life turned out, if you could is there anything you would change and why.
Where in the world would you live other than the UK.
And for something a bit different... What is the one question you would love me to answer honestly for you, but up to now was to polite to ask.

Date: 2008-10-15 10:20 am (UTC)I suppose another thing is that, although I adore my parents, I wish I had made myself more independant from them - especially Mum. As with all situations, it was something she had (a smothering mother) and always hated it ... but tends to be the same. Too late to change now, though ... and I do love them dearly and love being there weekends ... just can't not be there and go elsewhere is a pain sometimes.
I loved America when I visited - especially around wasington. I also like Italy and love Rhodes this year - but language and I don't get on! I suppose, that I may moan about my country (who doesn't) but I love being part of the huge history and heritage ... maybe that's why I am also drawn to Italy and Greece.
~~
The one thing to ask you ... Ok, and you can screen the answer if you want!
I know you don't particularily like your actual name (and you spell it wrong ... LOL) ... Why don't you like it, any reason, and what do your family and friends call you
no subject
Date: 2008-10-16 11:31 pm (UTC)I dont really hate it and if I had to choose another I dont know what it would be. I went to school with three other girls with the same name and just thought it very common. We have a instant mash potato over here called **DEB** so that was a school yard taunt. I of course don't like being called Debby much, but unfortunately my family has always used it. Friends always call me Debra, as that is how I introduce myself. Sometimes people just always shorten it without thinking and all you can do is cringe inside and move on.... All I could do is make sure people never did it to my children and use to stress to them to stand up for themselves and correct people who did.
My husband's name is Michael and he is called Mike by everybody but me, he prefers this.
My own mother hates her first name and has gone by her middle name, my dad had numerous names depending on which member of his family it was.
I am just funny about using peoples correct names... Crazy I know

Date: 2008-10-17 04:26 pm (UTC)Hadn't heard of the Mash called Deb, so don't blame you not wanting to me a mashed potato.
I have always hated Debbie as well - and went to school with 2 of them, so easier to keep mine as the full version. The family now call me Deb, which I don't particularily like either.
Thanks for answering OGM (!)

Date: 2008-10-16 09:25 am (UTC)well, you said in a reply to one of the comments that you'd love to be married - but only to the right guy!
so, what is your definition of the 'right guy'?
:)
no subject
Date: 2008-10-16 09:34 am (UTC)Well - to me, the right guy would be someone who is a Christian, who is a friend ... but there has to be that certain spark for me to want to look closer.
I have had male Christian friends ... but that was all they became, good friends ... the thought of getting close to them in a physical way was a "NO".
I know I am 47 but I still would love to meet someone who fits those characters - and as I have already hinted the only person who actually gave me that physical reaction is "another NO"!! Meeting him proved one thing to me though - there isn't anything wrong with me. like many (and especially one who is single) I have worried that there is something wtong with me in that I will ever feel a physical attraction... well, he proved me wrong.
So - the simple answer is a Christain friend, who makes me tingle!!

Date: 2008-10-16 05:56 pm (UTC)And I want to ask you a question, too!
What is your first childhood memory?
no subject
Date: 2008-10-17 05:25 pm (UTC)My first memory was when I was 2 (ish). I was on a beach and there was this shed-looking thing o=in the middle of it. It suddenly started rising up in the air, and I got splattered with flying sand (that hurt!!) ... It was a hovercraft!
I remember the day both my brothers were born - I was 4 1/2 and 6.
The first actual history event I remember was going to stand in our back garden to look at the moon, having just seen Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin step onto it on the TV ... I was 8. The weird thing is that James Marsters (who I am a HUGE fan) has filmed a film as Buzz Aldrin ... so that will really bring that story back to life.
I know you haven't done this meme, and i have only just met you, so don't know what to ask ... However ... Can I ask one thing? I hate to admit it but I know nothing about Finland, at all - so can you tell me one interesting thing about your country or your culture!
no subject
Date: 2008-10-17 09:42 pm (UTC)I think we Finns are a stubborn and proud nation. We had to be, to endure all the struggles we had to go through between Sweden and Russia. But at the same time we are very insecure nation, always worried what the rest of the world is thinking about us.
We've been told we have an outstanding schooling system and good social services and benefits, but at the same time we've had 2 mind-boggling school shootings within a year.
We are close to nature (at least we'd like to think so), but at the same time we are very hi-tech. (Nokia, anyone?!)
I think it's safe to say we are peculiar people. Good luck trying to figure us out! ;)
