Pic scam - Poughill, Cornwall

I know that I asked you for ideas as to what I could take pictures of - and be assured that I have taken some ppictures, but want to take some more.  So, I have neither forgotton, nor abandoned the idea.  If anyone else on my f-list wants to suggest something I can photograph - do go ahead!

Anyway - This afternoon I took the camera out to the village of Poughill (pronounced Poffill), which is now part of Bude.

As you can see by the pictures, it is old, and actually has the oldest list of vicars in the county - dating back to 1269.

POUGHILL VILLAGE.





I love this house - you don't get such a good picture of it as I used to whae I used to ride past it!


This property was built in 1525.


Poughill Church - The tower is 14th century.


Part of the churchyard.


These stone pillars are of Caen stone and are 14th century.




The oak carved bench ends date from the time of Henry VIII (1485 - 1509), and are mostly carved with scenes of Our Lord's Passion.


This is part of one of 2 wall paintings that were done in 1470 and restorded in 1898.  They are of St. Christopher (although the Church is actually dedicated to St. Olaf)- and I love that the mermaid is swimming between his legs ... complete with mirror!!!!!

I used to ride along that rode most days - and went to the Church for a few years, so it was fun to go and take the pictures.

I love old villages. It's such a shame when the road is so close to the buildings though. Must be noisy for the inhabitants! :) Love the painting!

Yes, I used to ride down here, and when there was no traffic, it was idyllic.

I have a friend who lives in one of the houses I pictured, and like everywhere, you get used to the noise. It isn't sign-posted as a route, but during the summer (sadly) we all use it to avoid Bude town entre.

Very impressive! I totally like the church and the grave yard...and the house on the 3rd pic is sooo Rosamunde Pilcher-like!! LOL
But tell me please, what are those blue things you can see between the benches? It looks so funny!

The bench ends are amazing - all of them are slightly different.

The overall pictures are great, but hard to get a decent picture of, but that mermaid just cracks me up.

I suppose as they have been there 600 years no one bothers as to the angle ... or maybe it's me standing wrong (LOL).

The carved benches are amazing - all are slightly different, but all spectacular.

A lot of these houses are either built of stone of of cobb ... therefore very thick.

Those pew ends are amazing ... but still uncomfortable to sit on ... LOL

It is a stunning village, and a beautiful Church.
