Bude - Surfers And The Beach.
Thursday, July 24th, 2008 02:41 pmSorry friends but my business is really quiet at present ... if this carries on I shall have to change jobs. This was one of the long-term effects of my hand injury. 12 weeks of being away from a phone meant that people got used to going to another therapist.
Anyway - the sun was shining this morning, DJ was having the day off ... and I still hadn't checked that my 300 zoom worked. So back to the main beach in Bude - these 5 pictures will give you an idea of why most people holiday here - or why a lot of people like to live here ... Beaches ... and surfing. Will admit the only surfing I do is on the web - but here is Bude ... the place where the first British Surf Lifesaving Club was set up.
Looking back towards Bude - you can see the lock gates (almost central in the picture)

Looking the other way shows how the river and canal overflow run into the sea.

Please note the white "dish" in the background - that is the establishment where I was playing last week - you know, one of those places that doesn't exist. There are about 2o of these dishes ... and they are about 5 miles-ish from where I am.

Red and yellow falgs mean there are life-guards on duty.

Date: 2008-07-24 03:20 pm (UTC)Yes, hard to know what to do about business. Bude is a small town with a lot of practicioners of various disciplines. Maybe the G.P.s need to be reminded - and Toni wondered about small fliers at nursing homes etc. I really will have to think seriously about something, if things don't pick up in September.

Date: 2008-07-24 04:11 pm (UTC)I suppose part of my problem was that when I qualified we were NOT allowed to advertise - and so it is hard to break away from what was taught, and also hard to know where to start, if I dare do it!

Date: 2008-07-24 03:38 pm (UTC)In Cornwall Fistral Beach, Newquay is the famous beach for surfing - but Bude prides itself on both a longer history and also more links with Australia due to that.

Date: 2008-07-24 05:34 pm (UTC)Yes, Newquay is a popular destination ... but I am biased to prefer Bude! Smaller and more relaxed - and a great centre for the whole North Cornwall/Devon block.

Date: 2008-07-24 05:31 pm (UTC)Bude... that's in Cornwall, right? Ya know, I just read Elizabeth George's newest mystery, Careless In Red, and it had me scratching my head because surfing in Cornwall plays a big part in the story, but I had never associated surfing with England. Something about the weather, I suppose...
But now there are photos! YAY!

Date: 2008-07-24 05:37 pm (UTC)Cornwall is on the Atlantic coast - and both Bude and Newquay are facing due west - so both are popular venues for surfers.
