Ramblings With DJ

Poor boy!  He was fast asleep when I got there this morning ... Still, I suppose it is a Monday morning!  He woke up by the time I had walked across his field, but still just lay there in the sun ... I don't know whether he was expecting me to carry him in, or just feel sorry for him and let him go back to sleep!

I clipped on his rope instead!  I then had to wait for him to stand - and once up to have a really amazing stretch ... for those who have never seen a horse stretch, well it is the same as a cat or dog ... only, slightly bigger!

And, so off to his stable, where he had a nice steady groom, his tail was combed, and his mane was both combed and plaited.

Toni rode Junior and led Smudge, so it meant that we had to do the yard gates again.

We headed towards the forestry and walked round through part of the area and then back onto the roads.  As Junior walks fast it meant that DJ and Smudge ended up jogging most of the way round.  So that was good for DJs waisteline!

Sadly about 3/4 way round we came round a corner to see a dead cow on the side of the road.  Where she had come from we don't know as the farms were further away .... However Smudge through a panic, and ran, at which point the rope slipped through Toni's hands.  There is only so long you can keep hanging on for your own safety's sake.  H e rushed past me which caused DJ to spin as if to follow.  I stopped DJ which in itself calmed Smudge.  As Toni was now past the body, it fell to me to catch Smudge and try to lead him past ... luckily I have led horses when at the stables, but catching them doesn't always work.  However Smudge was OK about being collected.  After a bit of nagging we were able to re-join Toni and head on our way home.

I told DJ he was a good boy - as he had been all morning ... so what did he do?  Yes, you guessed it.  He through a wobbly at his patch of oil!!  

Oh well back home and time to sponge him off, before a small feed and back to his feed where he tell Conrad all about his heroics in rescuing Smudge ... bet he didn't mention the oily patch!  Just as I was leaving he got down and rolled - well he didn't want to miss the oppertunity while his coat was damp from his wash, now did he!

I finally went riding on Friday and boy, did I ache on Saturday and Sunday!!! I blame rising trot and lots of grooming. Plus I had a bit of a fight on my hands to slow the horse I was riding down when she spooked at a waggly bit of paper on a bush.... Good grief - she can run when she wants to *g*

Good job I like going fast... ;)

Sounds like an adventure today for you - I wonder how the cow died??? Do you think it got knocked over by a car?

Yes - muscles in places muscles had never been before! Glad you managed to get there.

Those killer pieces of paper - they have attacked DJ a time or two - so he knows exactly what she was going through!

No idea about the cow - she was a least 1/2 mile away from the nearest field of cattle - as we had come down the road past her, we know that. Could have been a tractor - as they are always a lot in our area.
Will admit it woke DJ up as well - he was beginning to slow as it was warm and we had been trotting up a slight hill for some time.

Good thing DJ was able to keep his head and that calmed Smudge too. Dead cows and oily patches... I wonder how DJ would react if that oily patch ever disappeared. Would it bother him that all of a sudden, it wasn't there?

Don't even think about hiding the oily patch - it would take him forever to look for it!

Near where Ros lives there is a dog who sits in the front garden and DJ always jumps when he sees it ... but if it is not there he stops to look for it!

Poor cow. What will happen to it? Is there someone there to collect it from the road?

I have never seen a horse stretch- imagine it would look very cute.

Dead animals are collected by a company about 25 mins drive from me ... they re-cycle or they cremate, depending on the cause of death.

Yes - when they stretch you are reminded how long their back legs go when straight! Watch the cats - and picture DJ!

I'm glad that everyone was okay, and that you managed to catch up to Smudge without too much trouble! Poor cow, though...

Yes, it was sad about the cow - I suppose I should just be thankful that this is the first time I have seen anything like that.

Yes, I did wonder whether Smudge would allow himself to be collected - and then to take him past the situation ... still all OK, which is the main thing

Well you guys had quite an adventure today. Glad to hear there were no real problems when Smudge had his little panic.
Wonder what happened to the cow?

I loved reading about DJ laying down and fast asleep when you went to get him. He is very trusting of you to do that, or maybe lazy and not wanting to do any exercise. Either way he always sounds like a real character when you write about him.

Yes, DJ is lazy! Once he actually stayed asleep until i actually put the rope on him! But I also know that there is a lot of trust there, otherwise he wouldn't let me come up to him before he moved
