Yesterday I watched, for the first time in ages, "School Hard" ... Yay (More on that later)

I have watched series 1 ... and even trying to be objective, I still can't see what Buffy saw in Angel!  However it was great to see Giles and the Scoobies learning about each other ... and seeing some of the characteristics that we all love and hate.

Buffy -
Trying to balance school, slaying, love, family ... and already losing herself in the middle.
So was this combination what led her to love Angel ... An tall dark (some people would say handsome) stranger ... wh accepts her slaying, but doesn't need to much time committed to him, which also makes her want him more.

Giles -
So focussed on his books ... although it was great to see at the end he was willing to got to try to kill The Master, to save Buffy.

Willow -
So innocent and scholarly - but also willing to learn about new things rapidly.  But a very private person - as she ended up in a relationship that caused chaos.
Willing to look up things on the internet, but when it came to people she knew, she needed to hide away.

Xander -
A typical teen - active and enjoying any (or no) excuse to skip school ... yet also very jealous of the girl he couldn't have.
Willing to be involved - even on seaking help from Angel when needed.

Angel -
Not really honest ... even when pushed for an answer.  Coming and going in his timing - not when needed by the others.
He had to be pushed to go to look for Buffy when Xander confronted him - yet he professed to love her.

Joyce -
Trying to make a new start after a divorce - and a problem teenager.

Overall I enjoyed the season.

The start was great ... I think really set the tone for the future.  Boy and girl breaking into a school ... yet it is the girl (Darla) who is the baddie.

Some great story lines - school talent shows with mystical puppets,  nightmares that become real, a trip to the zoo that goes wrong.  It really showed us both the hazards of normal teenage life, but combining that with living on a Hellmouth.

So - yes, I am glad I watched it ... even though I found myself comparing Angel with Spike ... and hoping that Buffy would see the error of her ways!

I only watched season 1 once . Not a lot of memories..!You know even as a die hard Spuffy shipper I can see the attraction between a young Buffy and Angel but it was just a first love and he obviously wasn't made for her.

I totally agree with you about Angel. He was never very forthright (not sure I spelled that right) and never really helped with the patrolling, kinda just turned up to warn of something bad coming.. Especially at the end of the season with the prophecy. He's a 240 year old vamp and he's just going to stand around and wait for the 16 year old slayer to get killed by the Master? *snorts*

;)
My little brother watched seasons 1 to 3 when he came at Christmas and I couldn't help but watch it with him and got so annoyed with the Angel fixation!!

I started with Season One of Buffy - so of course Angel came first, then Spike...I was rooting for Angel/Buffy for a long time, until I started watching Angel and saw the relationship or bond between him and Cordelia - And then in Season 5 of Buffy - I was really, really liking the Buffy/Spike relationship and then in Season 6 and 7 - I just fell in love with Spike and then when he went on to Angel Season 5 - I was so happy to have him back :)

Re: Bangel...

They were all wrong for each other. I mean, he bought her Sonnets From the Portuguese for her birthday!

Angel was the older, good looking, mystery man that would appeal to a girl in her teens. She wasn't grownup enough to wonder why he was acting the way he did. He was her first taste of romance. The tall, dark stranger of teen fantasies. He really wasn't all that much help to her. He would drop around and say a bit then vanish into the thin air.

Angel mocked Spike saying Spike only got his soul to get into Buffy's pants. Well, Angel only came to Sunnydale to work on his own redemption after getting a look at the young sweet slayer. If Whistler had not shown Angel Buffy, he would still be in an alley somewhere chasing rats. Seemed to me that Angel was projecting there a bit. He sort of forgot that Spike had been with Buffy a long time before the soul. Angel was petty about Spike. "What? Are you like twelve?" Even after Spike died Angel couldn't bring himself to tell Wes and the others about how Spike was the hero. Again petty much? Love the word "wanker" for Angel. Fits him so well.

Yeah, I tried to like Angel also. Didn't really have that much of a feeling about the show till School Hard. Spike ran over that Welcome to Sunnydale sign and a love affair began. Then I started watching videos of James during interviews. Bang! I was a lost cause. My world shifted and all I could see was James. Spike, William,Capt John Hart, Ted Bundy and Brainiac were just all James for me.
