I did promise I would find you a picture - in actual fact there are 2!! They were taken of him in July 2005 about 2 weeks before his 2nd attck of strangles.
Strangles is an infection that affects the glands in the throat - which will swell up and literally strangle the horse. There is no immunity - and innoculation only lasts a short time. Highly contagious .... DJ had it in the Nov ... and was very mean!! We put a strict issolation on him - and although he was in a yard with 20 other horses he didn't pass it on. However he was very poorly - we came close to loosing him.
He has a scar under his throat where the ulcer split - which saved him .... the ulcer grew to just smaller than a tennis ball in size.
The second infection he had was less severe - but all the yard were affected this time - with the first pony being a miniature Shetland called Timmy.
In other words it is the horse equivalent of "Foot and Mouth" - and is dreaded by the equine world!

Thanks - He is fully recovered - and unless you know where to look for the scar you wouldn't know he had it.
He was a very good patient as he had 44 days in his box with no contact with anyone other than his nurse for the day - and then it was only for a short time. He was not allowed to be near other horses either. So once he was over the worst he must have got bored - but never tried to escape!!
Oh you just start with a cute DJ story. Any will do. Imagine you're telling a child you know about DJ and his friends. I can see DJ and Co. adventures :-)
Very cute! hehee! You are so lucky to have the space for DJ to play around like that! Having grown up in the city, we were lucky enough to live in an area where we could have horses and access the mountain trails, but we did not have the open space where we could just let them go have fun without trailering them to some far off location. It makes me feel a bit sad for my old equine companions.
Yes - Toni often moans that both where they live now and where these photos were taken we still have to do some road work. But I grew up in London - no horses in their natural life. At least they have space - and we can ride to space - they can be horses!!!

Date: 2007-10-03 11:13 pm (UTC)You really do need to write some DJ stories.
I know a lot of little ones who like horse stories.
