Fashion Problems Continue

Nothing to do with me this time!

DJ and I went out this morning (with Junior ... and Toni) for a shortish ride.  And for those worried about his varying hair styles - he went out with a flowing mane - nicely combed, and sprayed with a conditioner spray.

However the poor boy is growing out of his shoes!

For those who don't realise it horses hooves are like our nails and continue to grow; so although the farrier comes and trims the foot and places an iron shoe on it, the foot still grows.  So as he was today it means that it is another set of shoes for him in the next week or so.  The way you can tell this is that the foot starts to grow around the actual shoe and the clenches (nails) start to work their way out of the foot.  Last time he needed new shoes was because he had literally worn the other ones out  ... So he has either been lazier this time ... or maybe the diet worked!!

Having said that - it was only a shortish ride today - great weather and great company, though.

Still he managed to eat a couple of carrots before he headed back to play with Smudge!

The plait is called a "working plait" as it is done in one sweep down their neck - and can either be done on the actual top line, or like his is in a slight curve. It holds nicely (if you start with it tight) - but also unravels once the one elastic band is removed.

But DJ and grass - and lying down ... yes ... that suits the poor over-worked boy!!

Oooooh a working plait! Hee ive not seen one done along the side like that, only on the topline. Tis rather snazzy that way heee!

I am very lucky I can do either -

He does stand still while I am working ... and

his mane grows all on the one side ... which is correct (but unusual) - so I don't have to pull hair over his neck

Nawww yeah thats really handy! Ive met a few horsies that HATE the plaiting lol. Some just get a bit piddley, but my friends horse usually has to be twitched to get it all done.

Hmm that's interesting, I never actually knew that horse hooves grew. I've only been on a horse a couple of times...I took a riding class in a town close to here and I loved it! But I've never really had the time to ride them anymore....I wish I could have my own horse, though. They must be very expensive to keep though, right?

It is very expensive and time consuming - even when you have it easy like me with a horse that lives out all of the time.

But - they are amazing animals and give so much back to you (and I don't just mean the bumps and bruises!). I only started in my 30's - so maybe it will be something to do in the future ... fingers crossed for you

No I didn't until I started working at the stables - and then had a horse ... so that's why I commented on that. I just thought they eventually wore the shoes out - which does happen - but when he has a growing phase on his hooves ... watch out purse!!

I'm glad he had a nice day though. Seriously, I think I could handle all that hard work and I want to be DJ when I grow up :-D

Could you really cope - he had to walk in from his field, then eat a carrot, then get pampered, then walk up the road and back, then have a snack ... and another carrot, before heading back to his field to tell the rest of the boys all about his stressful morning!

I think the whole day sounds far too hard for me!
