We have been listening to some DVDs of Bible Study, at Church, that are led by Rick Warren ... the man who did the prayer at President Obama's inauageration.

The last couple of times, the rest of our group have requested the sub-titles as they don't undersand his accent!

Sorry - but it's clear to me!  Maybe listening to James in my car means I prefer to listen to Californians!

eta - Why have I now got an automatic link on the word DVD that I can't get rid of?

I find it pretty clear too, but I do watch (and always have) a *lot* of American shows/movies.

I understand the issues. I have to watch BBC programs with CC on, because lots of the slang is unfamiliar to me.

That's funny! California has kind of a non-accent accent (meaning it's not really an obvious accent like southern or New England) and I think it's generally considered pretty easy to understand. Of course, that's to other Americans! I remember the first time I heard an English accent other than my grandfather's - I was 10 and dad had brought a colleague home for dinner. I could barely understand her!
