First Music Gig

Yesterday morning as I was waking up one of the questions that the radio show was asking, was about first gigs/concerts.  Most of you who know me know that James was my first one, although I had played in numerous orchestral & band concerts.

However my story is Mum

1944, she was just 16.  She lived in a village in Northamptonshire and within 5 miles of the village, there were 3 USAAF airdromes.  Well they had a concert at the closest one, and althugh her parents weren't pleased she decided to go - after all it was in daylight & free .... so that gave her an advantage.

So, yes, she went.  It was packed with the staff, and locals, as concerts during the war were good for moral, but also everyone knew who the performers were (that's why Mum wanted to go)

Well, have you guessed ...

Yes, it was the Glen Miller Band.  He memory of everything always mentioned the fact that between note the band chewed gum.

So, if you are going to have a "first", then Glen Miller is about as good as you get!!!!

Glenn Miller & The Army Air Force Band - "IN THE MOOD" - November 13, 1943
I had to share this piece as it's one of my favourites, and one when I was in a Band I always found hard to play!!

And this is a picture of her about a year later -

I thought I would cross-post my [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger pictures here. Not brilliant images, but just love the chance to share with you a couple of interesting stories. The prompts were sewing & embroidery.

As I mentioned to a couple of people when I commented on their "covers", yes, I did do a patchwork breadspread ... so now we have the prompt of sewing I can post it here.

 photo DSC_0286_zpsrqridc8s.jpg

The middle, pink, set is made from my summer school uniform when I was 12 ... most of the other pieces have memories linked to them as well.
 photo DSC_0287 2_zpszucid6mh.jpg

I have done cross-stitch in the past, and must admit I have a couple that I need to finish at some point.  However this is the last one that Mum made.  She had made loads over the years, and quite a few gifts, including wedding presents to both Nick & Tim, and when she realised she was losing her sight she made this one for me.  One that she designed ... the ducks etc were from the calender picture of the year I was born!

 photo DSC_0288 2_zpswzkb1igc.jpg

However from Mum's point of view she always counted embroidery as something different.

This is one of many such things I have (including some beautiful table cloths), and was a hearth guard that she made while she was engaged, and when they got rid of the open fires it was turned into a picture.

 photo DSC_0290 2_zpsprkwv9nz.jpg

And, for something totally different this (poor) picture was made by my grandfather in his off-duty time.  He served in the Coldstream Guards from 1920 - 1925, and was then in the reserves for a time

4 Days!!

Saturday, June 20th, 2020 11:44 am
debris4spike: (Default)
Well I survived 4 days before "crashing" again ... so took the day off, although sadly my immediate manager has insisted I am tested for Covid, so this afternoon I get the test and hope that it's a speedy answer.  I know it's just my CFS not wanting me to set an earlier alarm.  But these are the days we are all living in, and working in a hospital means the alert needs to be at 200%

The weather is not doing so well, although that means I don't have to water the tubs around the garden.  As mine is patio I have loads of assorted ones (no design, just colours), so that saves me a job!!

One advantage that I have done in in the last few weeks of feeling better is re-reading the full series of Anne of Green Gables.  So lovely to re-read the full set straight through.  It was especially nice as I read the books that had been Mum's, and most were gifts from her parents so it was lovely to read the inscriptions, as well.

Well I had better get on and get the housework done ... where do the hours go?

Hope you are having a good weekend x

The Friday 5

debris4spike: (Spike - thumbs up (Keep up the good work)
1. Can you do simple sewing repairs, such as replacing a button or rejoining a straight seam?

My Mum made all her own clothes all her life, and for many years, so did I.  In fact, with her help I made the 2 bridesmaids dresses for my brothers weddings.

2. Can you change a flat tire?

Before I was having driving lessons I had a dentist appointment, and Dad took me there.  On our way home we had a puncture, and Dad got me to change the wheel.  He said that if I could do it in daylight, then I could do it any time, and yes, I have changed a tyre in the dark (on a country lane)

3. Can you plan and cook a simple meal?

Yes - I can also do a posher one.  I love baking as well.

4. Can you rewire a lamp?

Yes.  In fact I had to re-wire a ceiling fitting last month.  When I was at college I had a Saturday job in an electrical store, and we used to re-wire lamps for people who want longer flexes, etc

5. Are you a spender or a saver? Are you able to switch from one to the other on occasion?

I would like to think I am a saver, and in some ways I am ... a saver for a holiday (so I can spend money!!)

Month 2, Day 1

Yay, I have managed to track down the next month's list, so am able to do question 1 .... complete with a photo!

1 What's your favourite flower?

I love roses ... and this one is very special -
 photo 61561360_10157259006832442_7866852473778995200_n_zpsiv7hy8vr.jpg
and it smells as great as it looks.

This rose is very special, as it was Mum's favourite when she was a teenager. So, when she got married, her parents brought it with them on their first visit to their new home ... So for those who know their geography this first moved in 1953, from Northamptonshire, Essex, North Wales, back to Essex, North Cornwall, Torbay, and is now in Exeter

And so I have finished.  Thanks to those who have sponsored me ... 101 lengths are completed.

I was glad to spend that time remembering Mum, and thinking of how awful it was for that amazing talented lady to lose her sight in the last few years of her life.

Love you, Mum.

Me Again!

debris4spike: (Mum)
So, today was Day 1 of my 100 length swim for charity, and I ended up feeling very rough this afternoon ... so slept the time away, rather than starting my challenge. I decided that, rather than push myself today and then being ill or tired, I was going to "switch off" today. So I slept for 3 hours, and d feel a lot better.

I also need to catch up with my meme -

4 What's the best museum you've ever been to?

I truly love The British Museum and the V&A in London ... but even better is The Wallace Collection, also in London.

The Wallace Collection is a combination of rooms set as they were in the early 19th century, plus artwork (including some Canalleto's, which I love), and then museum cases .... of which they have the oldest complete horse armour.  So, for me, a great combination for everyone (and it's free).  I have been at least 4 times, and there is always something different to spot ... and they have a great coffee shop!
debris4spike: (Gardening - cut the grass Avon &Vila)
I moved into this house 8 years ago, and am only getting round to re-doing my study, so I can get a carpet down ... at long last.  I did paint it when I had the bookshelves made, but have wanted to get it properly done, and carpetted.  So a couple of weeks ago I chose the carpet, and booked the fitting ... so now I have a timetable.

I had today off work, but after going into the city to get a haircut, do some shopping, including new sandles, I didn't get much done today.  Luckily it is a small room!  I want to get it mostly sorted tomorrow (another day off)

Tomorrow I also want to go up to the cemetery to cut the grass round the gravestones,  They do mow the grounds, but not 101% up close to the stones for safety sake, so I want to get them looking good ... we have good weather here, and it is Easter.

Anywaay, once I have done the study I want to finally get on with my spare room ... a job that REALLY needs doing!!

My other decorating project is one I am not doing.  Tonight someone came to pick up my garden bench to clean, repair & varnish.  I know some people will think I am mad to spend money on an old bench .... however, it was a gift to Mum when she left her P/T job back in 1983.  She went to work for the 4 years I was at college, and worked at a departmental store (where I also worked Saturdays, & holidays) ... and they had a collection when she left (so rare at that shop),  and she had this super bench.  I don't want to loose it.

Oh well, as you can see I am busy .... which is good ... especially as I do struggle with depression, as most of you know.  So am pleased that I am beginning to kick back some focus.

... And as [livejournal.com profile] teragramm knows, I am also trying to learn more techniques for my icons ... and attempting banners.  She foolishly offered to give me a bit of help, and supposrt.  Thank you
debris4spike: (Mum)
... to swim 100 lengths.

Guide Dogs (for the blind) is doing a May100 challenge, and as I need a challenge I am going to do this. I do support a puppy-in-training (the present one is called Fletcher) in Mum's memory. Watching her lose her sight was heart-breaking in the extreme, and this challenge is doubly special as it was her who taught me (and my brothers) to swim ... to begin with just in the sea around England when on holiday, and then occasionally at a swimming pool where Dad worked.

She kept swimming until she was 80, as she is in this photo taken in Rhodes of the two of us.

So, I am raising money as part of this challenge, as you can see here

On the same day that we went to Stanwick, we also went to Raunds, to see the Church, and hopefully the cemetery to see my other set of great-grandparents (however there was absolutely no parking there, so we just went to The Church) ....

My grandfather was born here in 1896, and christened in St Peter's Church .. so worth a visit!

I grew up knowing about RAF Chelveston, as an American base during the war. Mum actually saw Glenn Miller there and it gave her a love of band music, that she passed on.

During the Second World War the airfield was occupied by both the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces. It was given the USAAF designation Station 105.

In early 1942, Chelveston was turned over to the American Eighth Air Force. The first USAAF unit to occupy Chelveston was the 60th Troop Carrier Group. The 60th consisted of the 10th, 11th, 12th and 26th squadrons, equipped with 53 C-47 aircraft. On 9 August 1942, the 301st Bombardment Group (Heavy) took up residence on the station. The 301st was assigned to the 1st Combat Wing at Brampton Grange. Its operational squadrons were the 32d, 352d, 353d, 354th and 415th Bomb Squadrons, each equipped with Boeing B-17F Flying Fortresses. USAAF Station Units assigned to RAF Chelveston were:
442d Sub-Depot[2]
18th Weather Squadron
2d Station Complement Squadron
1059th Military Police Company
1632nd Ordnance Supply & Maintenance Company
876th Chemical Company (Air Operations)
2030th Engineer Fire Fighting Platoon
5th Mobile Training Unit
309th Medical Dispensary

During the war this, and 2 other airfields would circle over Stanwick, while getting into formation ... sadly 2 planes miss-timed on one occasion while Mum was outside, and almost killed by having her lungs collapsed by the force of the explosion. Someone saw her fall down, and came and thumped her on the back, which meant she took a deap breath in.

In 2007 a memorial was made to celebrate the American heritageExpandIn memory of the USAAF )

I had 2 reasons for going to Northants this weekend. Firstly to visit Auntie Mary but also to visit as it would have been Mum's 90th birthday. So I wanted to do some sight-seeing of the village of Stanwick I knew as a kid. Until I was 18/19 we used to go up every 6 weeks, or so.

When Mum was a kid, and in fact as I remember it, the village was surrounded by fields. However they have made a nature reserve there ... and Jiffy and I visited it in the afternoon -

Happy 90th

debris4spike: (Mum)
90 years ago Mum arrived at this village, and to the day Jiffy and I were there.

Mum so wanted to live longer than her mother, who died on her 90th birthday, but was only 87.  So Jiffy and I are here for a couple of days, as we are hoping to visit Auntie Mary tomorrow.  We spent some time in the village, went into the Church (where Mum was christened), then to Grandma & Granddad's graves; then to Raunds, where Granddad was born, and again to the Church (which is under major repaires as the East wall was falling off!!)

Sadly, although I have my camera, I forgot the pc cable .. so other photos will have to wait.

 photo Untitled_zpsxfnticsy.jpg

We then went to Stanwick Lakes, where I bought a snack lunch and then had a good walk. This place "didn't exist" when Mum knew the village ... but some of the water was used for a local mill, where Mum also learnt to swim.

And so back to our hotel mid-afternoon. Poor Jiffy is exhausted, which is nice to see!!! I am also being a good girl, and not over-doing things.

Also, must catch up on the February Meme -

February 14 - Who do you love?

Well, I have to say Jiffy ... we are sharing a holiday together, after all.

February 15 - Who was your first celebrity crush?

I can't remember the order, as 2 were close together ... and I still like them both.

Sorry I still haven't got around to replying to your comments. Being back at work has left me tired the rest of the week, so am trying to be good.  Haven't yet been to the gym in 6 weeks, but hope to try again next week.

It was hard though, as in the midst of starting to feel sorry for myself, we learnt (as a dept) that one of the team has been diagnosed with a late-stage cancer.  She is 42, and will fight, but it really brings home how fragile life can truly be.

Anyway, yet again I chose the subject over at [livejournal.com profile] photo_scavenger so thought I would share my post with those who aren't members.  The subject was "10 STEPS" ... in other words walk 10 steps out of your door, and take a photo -

I am (as aver) sorry that I (again) disappeared. The flu that started at the beginning of this month is still with me. I have spent the last 2 - 3 weeks sleeping. Over the last couple of days I have been able to stay awake during the day, so progress is being made; however I am still sleep a minimum of 12 hours overnight. Jiffy is happy to have me around, and as he loves sleeping he is quite happy to snooze the days away. I feel guilty about the work missing me, and I have missed a few birthdays here ... so all in all I have had a fuzzy time!!

On another note it is weird to think that it was 2 years ago today that Mum died. Can't believe that it's been that long, but as Brenda pointed out when she text me this morning, Mum is still very much alive in our hearts and minds.

I am not around much, but had spotted this meme that [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee and [livejournal.com profile] hobbituk have been doing. I liked the look of it, but have recently started too many memes only to abandon them. However [livejournal.com profile] manoah has done the whole thing today so thought I would also give it a go .....

I owe replies, I haven't caught up with my f-list .... I am just so, so bad!

But I am determined to start catching up, starting today.  In about 1/2 hours time Jiffy and I are heading out to pick up my friend Christine, have a walk and lunch at a doggy friendly place.  I am taking my camera but as the decorator is still in I can't get at my main computer so won't share today .... but will asap.

Anyway, what's up with me?  Not much!

I am having my kitchen painted at present, and yesterday the same painter finished painting my bedroom.  The carpet arrives next week.  So hopefully as the days and weeks now move on I shall be able to start packing things away in their permenant homes.  I have decided to have a sunlounge off my kitchen, so there is that to confirm and book ... and then the only thing I will eventually need is a new lounge carpet and the room painted.

No further on my holiday plans, as I am waiting for Annemarie to confirm the dates with her.  So annoying, as I dare-say flights, etc will be going up in price.   So am still at the vague point of Oregon - LA - San Fransisco - Visiting a friend in Missouri.  Will update, when I can.

Jiffy is doing well - slightly confused by stuff being moved around all the time, so it will be nice to get him settled again.

Having been a bit on-off with the gym, I have gone twice last week, already once this week, and booked for a class on Friday.

I have had a week or two of drifting, but I am determined to get myself back on track.  I will catch up with comments, re-post a gift I owe (!), and try to keep up to date with all your journals.  Bear with me - I will get there!

Well I had better get on and get Jiffy ready.

I know I have missed a few birthdays over this last week sorry - but on the day that would have been Mum's 89th birthday, I do hope you had a good day, and the year ahead is special.

Be back later *hugs*

40 - What were your highs and lows of the past year?

Obviously loosing Dad was the low point ... as was helping him to cope with loosing Mum and also his independence. Although I do have some good memories of some of those days.

So spending time with Dad was special ... as was my trip to London. I plan to go back to London in November again, and know I will see Dad again in Eternity.

What is your favorite piece of art you own?

Hard to say. I have nothing expensive, and a vast range of styles. However all the pictures on my wall are individually loved. I have a few favourites, including

The Love Letter by Millet (print) My copy was my Grandparents and is in a lovely wood frame, and is sepia.
 photo d103defb-660c-4dda-b180-b3076697ea4f_zpsrokxteme.jpg
btw, the artist went down on the Titanic.

I have 4 prints of Italy that a friend gave me.

However the true specials are the paintings that Mum did. She sometimes copied pictures, but in one she painted the 5 houses that they lived in during their marriage. I often asked her where the next house would go ... but as it turned out she never needed it! It made it that much harder when she lost her sight to realise what she had lost. These aren't great photos as they were taken on my phone, so the angle means they are slightly blurred in places, and the colour isn't great, but you will see what I mean -

Day 09 → talk about art this year

Selling Mum & Dad's house means that we had to have all the belongings sorted, and for that we had a lot of Mum's paintings. Some of them are very special, and luckily we all had different tastes so there were actually no arguments .... thankfully.

When I was in London I went to the National Gallery (pics to come at some point), and it was great to wander through. Some of the viewing I did was that of strolling past, but when I saw something I liked I looked closer.

For both Mum and the gallery one of the things I like are pictures that are "real" ... I like to see what I am looking at, and especially one that has a lot of details.

One of my favourites is Canaletto, and when you look at his work you see what I mean.
